The Acton Agricultural Fair opened Friday with large attendance and a strong display of livestock fruit and vegetables. Judges praised the horses finest ever exhibits and the gardens and arts sections drew praise as crowds viewed the many prize winning entries from Acton and surrounding towns.
Concord High School hosts a boys tennis tournament with 21 entrants directed by acting manager Donald Smith. Early results include Robert Bygrave def Victor Heyliger 6 3 6 4 and Julian Tolman def William Tibbetts 6 1 4 6 2 Donald Smith defeated James Lennon 6 1 6 1 with Robert Cleland winning by default over William Rudd.
Middlesex County Extension Motion Pictures will be shown in Acton Town Hall on Thursday October 11. Louis B. Talbot publicity agent says over 5,000 people saw last month's show.
Mr and Mrs George H Gutteridge of Brooks Street quietly marked thirty years of marriage with a family dinner at their home. Attending were Mrs Gutteridge's parents Mr and Mrs William Wood and other relatives. They wed in Stow on September 28 1898 with Rev Moulton officiating. He has served as town treasurer seven years and holds several community roles. she leads the Ladies Benevolent Society and is active in local clubs and theater groups.
Maynard October reports the St Anthony Crusaders held its first annual banquet and dance at Mapledale Inn Stow with about one hundred guests. Boston K of C district deputy gave the oration while Levinstein of Sudbury spoke on Italy. A program of music dancing and performances entertained guests.
Bedford authorities mourn Mabel M. Kirkegaard secretary of the Bedford Republican town committee and president of the Bedford Woman's Community Club died at home at 28 after nine months of illness. Born Aug 2 1900 she studied at Concord High School Walton Business School Boston Museum of Fine Arts New England Conservatory of Music Berkeley Preparatory School and Boston University Law School. She passed the bar December last and planned to practice law this fall. She held memberships in several civic groups and leaves her parents a sister and two nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Church of Christ and burial followed in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Registration rush looms as deadline looms October 17. A Connecticut resident who hasn’t voted since 1888 to 1893 seeks a voter record from Maynard town clerk to prove registration. The clerk noted strong interest from first time voters this year.
Bedford October 3 Grange ends 18th annual fair with exhibits from gardens orchards and home crafts Highlights include a Veterans Hospital exhibit and a DeMolay concert The fair featured Old Home Day a hand tub display and an automobile show Committees led by John R Comley oversaw divisions such as General Publicity Household Apron sales Supper Candy Booths and Food with Middlesex County Extension staff coordinating demonstrations and displays
Maynard High School dedicated Alumni Field and opened the season with a 13 to 0 defeat by Clinton High. Clinton dominated after an even first period with two touchdowns, Wiseman scoring and kicking the extra point. Sorel of Clinton had a notable 50 yard run after an interception, while Maynard's defense and Frigard’s play were highlighted in a hard fought game.
Ernest Mariano Taylor pleaded guilty to manufacturing and to keeping and exposing liquor at the Superior court. He received fines of 50 dollars on each charge. His wife pleaded guilty to keeping and exposing and was fined 100 dollars. A sale charge against the wife was filed. In district court the fines totaled 1000 dollars for the couple.
Public notice lists hours for district nurse Miss Mary Tete to receive visitors at her home from 7 30 to 8 00 am and 12 30 to 1 00 pm. For other times Miss Nellie Co is to be contacted.
Rev Gail Cleland resigns as pastor of Trinitarian Congregational Church Concord effective after seven years. He accepts call to First Congregational Church Alameda California and plans to move with Mrs Cleland to be near their families. The church community wishes them well as they depart to new field of endeavor.
Roy Gallant, 19, a trusted inmate at Massachusetts Reformatory, escaped from the West Concord farm Saturday afternoon while serving as a water carrier. A search by local and state police, aided by Concord and nearby towns, followed. Gallant was recaptured near Acton Centre that night and returned to the hospital.
An advance sale of membership tickets will be held Friday October 5 from 7 to 9 PM at the P H Murphy shoe store. The evening sale is an innovation to avoid confusion and delay at the club's opening meeting on Tuesday October 9.
Concord will host an open house on Saturday October 6 to support the drug fund. Historic Lexington road churches and the Emerson House will open 12 to 4 pm with period costumes, a bean dinner 12 to 2 pm, and a 4:15 pm concert by Mrs Charles B Brown in Town Hall. A 6 pm street closing on the Green will feature old-time dances and a Virginia Reel led by Wilbur Fiske. townsfolk are invited to attend.
The gecom annual clambake at Virginia road hosts a skeet shoot and handicap event as leading features. Also planned are bench show for pointers and setters a coon hunt for coon hounds a drag hunt for fox hounds and horse shoe putting contests. Entries on the day with prizes for winners. rain postponement to next day. President Harry H Cook chairs the general committee including Nelson Horne Frank Macone John Macone William Ryan and others.
Girl Scout Clover Leaf troop awards presented Friday evening at Union National Church vestry. Committee members Mrs Frank E Sanderson Mrs Carl Stockbridge Mrs Eva Frye Mrs Frank Farnell and Mrs William Boicourt organized the event. Awards lists include cooking knowledge of birds health pioneer musician gardener home service and handicraft with multiple recipients such as Edith Perkins Barbara Stockbridge Dorothy Marsden Lois Murray Esther Murray Jane Boicourt Ellen Swanson and others. A guest scout leader Miss Coburn spoke on instructive topics and a buffet lunch followed a social program.
Intentions of marriage have been filed at the town clerk in Migsja Eriksen daughter of Hans Eriksen of Stow Samuel C Ineson formerly of Acton Alsé of Adna Marion Bud ris and Frank Veracka both of Maynard.
Richard Loring and Miss Enders wed at Trinity Church in a ceremony described with maid of honor Miss Frome and best man Montgomery Jr. The couple pledged vows amid a reception at the bride’s home in Brookline. Mrs Enders, a Concord High School graduate, plans a post wedding trip and home life on Mont Road after November 1. Mr Enders, a 1925 graduate of Pennsylvania State College.
A women's gathering at the Congregational Church in Acton drew a large crowd on a Wednesday morning. The program featured a service by Reverend Ralph A. Sinan and a discussion led by Mary Carver on the impact of projects, with music by Songan and remarks by Mia Wallace Conant.
