A big patriotic Victory celebration and community sing drew about 300 Acton residents to the I. O. O. Fy hall on Tuesday evening November 12. Commander D. H. Hall Isaac Davis Post 138 presided with Bertram D. Hall as toastmaster. Rev. C. L. Pierce spoke to applause and Miss Helen Reed performed readings.

Red Cross Knitted Articles Returned to West Acton

Youth Brakeman Pierce Survives Fall at South Acton Yard
On Monday morning November 8 Cecil K Pierce 18 a brakeman on a freight train at South Acton Yard was thrown from the top of a car as the train halted He grabbed a wheel to free his leg and avoid being crushed The car rolled over him and the engineer moved on He suffered a broken jaw and a 2 inch facial cut and was sent to Waltham hospital Also Herbert Gray was injured when a car struck his auto near Concord damaging the front mudguard.

Maynard Soldier Wounded at Chateau Thierry Returns Home
Private Michael Lesage of Maynard Co D 104th Infantry was wounded July 22 at Chateau Thierry while aiding in operating a machine gun. He crawled to cover through open ground, was hit in the wrist leg and thigh, received first aid at several stations, and was evacuated to an army hospital in Rahway New Jersey before going home as a bed patient. He is 23, native of Maynard, and bears four war wounds with a gold wound stripe.

Chief of Police Frank requested and received the resignation of Patrolman Samuel King effective immediately. King, on the force 35 years, passed over his office equipment and did not state a reason. He is the sole surviving member from the early days, with former peers listed.

Concord Junction Delivers Fatal West Medford Train Tragedy
Mrs. Ruth Oakes 78 was struck and killed by a Boston bound train at West Medford station while crossing the tracks. The accident also killed Arthur B. Fitch of West Medford who tried to warn her. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Oakes at the home of her daughter in West Medford with interment in Holden, Massachusetts.

Scoutmaster Meese of Troop 644 New York City visited Troop 1 at their meeting Friday and spoke about Camp Devens where he serves as a private in the infantry. He led a drill and awarded an Achievement button to Scout Barker for selling 25 stamps in the W S campaign. Troop 1 earned a country hike and Celogee Cover prize for best observation report judged by Walter Wood who invited the hike. New members are being added to all three troops.
