A Dodge Brothers statement explains wartime activity and notes that their car was the only in its class approved and adopted by the War Department. The firms say their cars performed well under government service, boosting goodwill among owners.
Maynard public school teachers and students earned high praise for their patriotic response to war work efforts. They exceeded expectations in Red Cross fund drives and Liberty Bond campaigns, contributing 126.93 dollars for Byward Soldiers Christmas. Assabet Aero F O E held a Masonic hall meeting with officers nominated for election at the December 10 gathering.
Miss Nettie Taylor, departure for Paris to serve as executive secretary of the American University Union, received a farewell party at her Walnut Street home from former Maynard High School art classmates. Mrs Ruth Smith presented a writing case with best wishes, followed by a social hour with music and refreshments.
The Philathea class of the M. E. church will hold an entertainment and sale of fancy articles at Colonial hall Thursday evening Dec 1. The first fall of snow occurred Tuesday with a small hurricane at about 1 am.
The Delphia quartet with reader Miss m Dow will perform a patriotic concert in I C O F hall West bn on December 11 under the auspices of Wino naekah lodge. War songs will be featured and friends note the event in Acton. Charles Hunter of Concord Junction is mourned after a sudden death last Monday.
Priv. Charles Harry Heath and Miss Margaret Eldrid wed in Newark New Jersey on November 18 1918. Heath was severely wounded in the Cantigny battle May 28 and after months in hospitals was brought to the United States and is in U S general hospital No 3 Rahway New Jersey recovering from his injuries. His friends wish them happiness and prosperity.
Two house fires startled a small village last Tuesday with a chimney blaze at a Red Acre farm house quickly put out and a more serious blaze at a Maynard Street two apartment dwelling owned by Miss Elizabeth Richardson. Tenants evacuated and household goods moved as interior damage spread to partitions and roof.

Returning wounded Marines and soldiers arrive on furlough at New York convalescent hospitals and state bases. Privates Taylor and Lesage have reported back, with Manning Beavis Downey Carney Moynihan and Hietala among others awaiting further furloughs and healing. The town anticipates a renewed civic voice as these men reclaim their lives and duties.
A pleasant social evening was held Tuesday at Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Miller’s Glendale street home. Friends enjoyed games vocal and instrumental selections and received gifts. Lieut. Ralph Shattuck of the engineers officers training school at Camp Humphries Washington returned to his father Sidney Shattuck's Parker Street home on a four days furlough this week. He entered service in August at Portland Oregon and has been stationed in Baker Oregon where he worked in business.
Private Albert Whalen of Company K 58th Infantry 4th Division and Private Emmet McCarthy of Company D 104th Infantry are reported to be at base hospitals in France with trench feet. Their parents, Mr and Mrs James Whalen Riverst and Mr and Mrs James McCarthy Oak Street, supplied the last letters.
Sergt. Edward H. Brown writes from the front to his wife Mrs. Grace Brown of Waltham that Private Cornelius Callahan of Maynard served alongside him in one of the war’s fiercest closing engagements, a battle described as among the hottest of the conflict.
Sergt. Harry Fowler C A C completed officers training at Fort Monroe Virginia and was honorably discharged last week. He is at his parents home on Brooks Street with his mother and Mr and Mrs Augustus Morse. He attended the Harvard versus Brown football game at the Stadium on Saturday with his family.
Clarence Bodfish of Columbia Michigan drove to Maynard and spent the weekend with his family who visited at the home of his wife's parents Mr and Mrs A T Haynes on Brooks street.
Thanksgiving events reported include John Lynch visiting family and Concord residents attending Boston theatre parties. A chimney fire on Bedford Street triggered a fire department response to Henry Mahan's house. Jerome Gleason Jr left for New York after a furlough with parents. Local servicemen from Camp Devens returned home for Thanksgiving dinner. Michael Feehan hires Thomas Hazel from the municipal light department. James Hopkins Sr was at officers’ training school in Cambridge. A large crowd enjoyed Thursday evening movie pictures at the State Armory, profits going to Red Cross and United War Campaign. The Minute Man press arrived at 7 Walden Street, formerly owned by Howard D. Dee of Concord Junction. Michael and Thomas Kelley, Bedford Sr., visited parents over Thanksgiving. both stationed in New York Navy and aviation corps respectively.
The Concord chapter of the American Red Cross met Monday evening in Concord Town Hall with Mr. Jewell presiding. Reports from branches Acton, Boxboro, West Acton, and others were read. nursing, home service, and junior Red Cross updates were given, and the old board of officers was unanimously elected.
Sergt. John F. Mulcahy of Co. D 104th U S Inf is praised for carrying messages under heavy artillery fire and aiding wounded on the battlefield. He is a Concord resident, son of Mr and Mrs John Mulcahy of 9 Brooks Street, oldest of four brothers serving in the war. He joined with Co I of the old 6th Regiment and went overseas with the 104th last year.
The annual St Bernard’s parish reunion at Monument Thanksgiving Eve united old and young. The Marlborough Colonial Orchestra performed from 8 to 9, then dancing till 1. James J. O’Leary directed the floor. refreshments at 10 included ice cream cake and coffee. Mrs Nellie Keefe chaired the refreshment committee.
The Concord High alumni football team did not show up for a scheduled game or event, leaving organizers awaiting players and spectators uncertain about the matchup.
Nellie Cotter of Marlborough spent the Thanksgiving weekend with friends in Concord Junction. Ronald visited relatives in Fitchburg for the holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas King of Franklin joined Mrs. L. G. King for the week at her residence.
Concord Junction mourns as Lieut Whipple H Parker of Co G 816th Inf dies from pneumonia two weeks after being gassed on Oct 6. Born May 6 1890 in Baldwinsville he worked at Allen Chair and Chickering Piano. Survived by mother Mrs Gilman Cleveland sister Mrs Cortland Witherell and brother Harry B Parker.
Union church and parish announce an Every Friend Canvase to be held next Sunday afternoon in coordination with similar efforts nationwide. Members are urged to attend both morning and afternoon services to hear reports and pledges for church support. Rev.
