Maynard residents host and visit relatives in Worcester Providence and Boston over weekends. A baby girl born to Mr and Mrs James Sheridan joins a list of weddings and travels as locals attend church events, conventions, and war effort activities. Local officials vote to raise teacher salaries and the White Cross Guild plans a Sunday program at Riverside hall.
Public school teachers toured Camp Devens on Friday afternoon with Maynard residents. Fifty people traveled in ten autos to view the gas house the gas demonstrations trenches base hospital and Soldiers' club furnished from interned German liners. Guides included Sergt. McPherson and local car owners listed.
Private Arthur Oates and Private William Morrell of Co. C 5th Ammunition Train U S A arrived from Camp Logan Texas and spent the latter part of the week with their parents. Their regiment has been moved to Camp Upton New York.
Chief of Police Frank S. Binks announced a vigorous campaign to remove loafers from town this week. Any able bodied men found loafing in the streets, saloons, or pool rooms will be pressed to work.
Privates Albert Whalen and Thomas Smith stationed at Pleasant Street were moved from the depot ban e at Camp Devens to the 301st Infantry. Robert Whitney was reassigned to the Engineer corps and John Carpenter to Company A Ammunition Train during the week.
Joseph Dee Jr. owns a new automobile hearse. Forest Whitney started at Richardson's pharmacy. Jarvis Derby is confined at home ill. A social dance will be held at Union hall Carlisle Friday night. Corp. Dillon and Private Curley visited from Ayer on Sunday. Mrs D A Baldwin visited her summer home in Nonquid. Fire department responded to a brush fire behind Benjamin Pope estate. Mrs Leroy Peabody and daughter Betty visiting Lang street home of Mrs Peabody’s parents. Pomona Grange meeting in Acton drew many Grangers. Town stores will close Wednesday afternoons from June 5 through August. Concord Grange meets Wednesday night June 5 with an entertainment planned.
The production Arrah-Na-Pogue at Monument hall Friday evening drew a crowded house for Red Cross relief. Cast retained most members with Hartnett absent. Lowden dies suddenly in Boston at 69, survived by wife, four daughters, and a contractor’s family legacy.
A party of about 25 ladies gathered at the Concord canoe clubhouse Tuesday night to honor Miss Grace Hunt with a bridal shower. She was surprised by the turnout and a long table displaying most of a fine china set. Refreshments included sandwiches olives cold drinks cake and ice cream amid a joyful atmosphere.
Annie Muscate, a child of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Muscate, was killed when an automobile struck her on Bedford Road last Thursday. The busied roadside scene involved soldiers in the car and led to her burial at St. Michael's Cemetery on Walk Hill Street in Forest Hill Saturday afternoon.
Concord High School defeated Winchester High School 6 to 5 in 12 innings at Concord Wednesday afternoon. Winchester led 5 to 0 through eight innings before Concord rallied with five runs to tie and then scored the final run in extra frames.
Martin McMahon of the U S Navy visited Bedford over the weekend. Francis MacDonald plans a quick departure for Fort Slocum New York to join the drafted men quota. Jesse Livermore, once of Bedford, spent Sunday seeing old friends. Mrs Waldo E K Pratt of Norwood visited Bedford Saturday. Locals attended memorial services at St Bernard's cemetery Concerg Sunday afternoon. Town residents also traveled to Boston for Barnum Bailey circus performances at Fenway Park show grounds.
The British Naval and Military Veterans Association of Massachusetts led by Col. Menzes and the Highland Dross Association of Boston under Major George Smith joined the Minute Men of Bedford commanded by Capt. F. F. Cook. Services at the Old North Bridge graves preceded a welcome on the common, speeches by Lt. Col. Smith and Sgt. Warwick, a civic club lunch, Kipling readings by Mr. Barnes, then return to Boston by special cars.
The Keeps Open House at Llewsac lodge drew many visitors with Mrs Samuel McCall as guest of honor and a morning reception. Receiving line included Miss Caroline M Caswell, lodge namesake, and superintendent Mrs Higgins. Nellie Hill and Alice Aberdein performed as soloist. An exhibition and sale followed winter work. Afternoon features included a settlement children lawn exhibition and a Cinderella in Flower Land play directed by Ruth E Wheeler.
A registered Shetland pony Jacquelin donated by Miss Elizabeth Goulding to the Red Cross sold at a town hall auction on Saturday evening with all proceeds given to the Red Cross. The bid opened at 50 dollars by Miss Mary Parker, with several 50 dollar bids from Louis Pfeiffer, George Sweetnam, and George Blinn, followed by numerous smaller bids from children. George H. Sweetnam Jr. won the pony after a total price of 407 dollars was raised.
In Massachusetts during the Liberty loan drive, towns of 5000 or less showed strong patriotism and efficient effort. Bedford, with a quota of 47 500, subscribed 157 800, nearly four times its allotment, exceeding many larger cities.
Memorial services were held in the town hall Sunday evening at eight. Dr I Pfeiffer presided and the principal speaker was Hon Charles M Gardner. Special music came from the girls orchestra and the church fair.
Philip O'Dowd and Rose Ferry married on Sunday in this town. The couple plan to reside after the ceremony and were congratulated by many friends. Mr O'Dowd departed for Camp Upton New York on Monday.
A woman recalls Marion restless with her mother during a phone call. The helper outside suggests a yard cat search. Marion returns disappointed and insists there are no symptoms of a cat outside.
William Register spends weekend at home in Wagnsocket R I. Mrs Clarence L Trufant leaves for a visit to New York relatives. Miss Louise Lyons visits Brooklyn relatives. Mrs Elizabeth M Franks of Beverly visits grandmother Mrs S Julia Loring. Mr and Mrs Michael McCarron of Watertown guests of the Macone parents. Mr and Mrs Wm H Wood return from winter in St Petersburg Fla. Mrs W W Curtice of Hudson visits Mrs B F Howe. Curtice recently returned from Florida. Rev and Mrs N S Hoagland attend Unitarian anniversary meetings in Boston and Tremont temple festival. Mrs J W Graham of Frankford Ky visits then goes to New York for two weeks. Mr and Mrs Ambrose Kyte and family of Waltham and Mr and Mrs William Golden and infant son of Natick visit Mrs L G King. Joseph King honored with wrist watch by Thomas Todd after leaving Todd Printing Co Boston. Invitations received for wedding of Edith Hobbs and Frank L Stanton to be held in Cambridge.
Reverend Robert Walker the chaplain raised funds for a silk regimental flag for the chapel. He presented the flag at patriotic exercises in the yard after soliciting in town and Boston. State director C R Bagley received the gift and passed it to Superintendent P W Allen as 400 inmates and 150 friends recited allegiance. Were married.
Stanley Payson son of A. BR Payson and Miss Catherine Richardson of West Acton were united in marriage Saturday afternoon May 25. Payson, a well regarded local youth, is expected to be drafted and leave for military service soon.
Ensign W. C. Hoagland sent dispatches from New Orleans and Norfolk describing sultry weather and abundant mosquitoes. He noted bananas in abundance and sightings of American submarines from their vessel during the voyage to an unknown port.
Luther Franks, once a prominent local figure and a 1904 graduate of C. H. 8, has joined Wright & Martin Aircraft Corp as assistant chief draughtsman at their new Long Island City plant. Florence Silverston is Chicago's first woman public certified accountant.
West Acton resident Ralph Jones works for Hall Bros Co. Edith Woodward of Boston visits A F Blanchard in town. Mrs Edward Holton of Medford visits C J Holton’s home. Nelson Womboldt of Shirley spends Sunday with family. Sergt Carl Hoar H Wesley Hall and Arthur T Goding at Camp Devens spend weekend at homes. L W Perkins and a state agent release 1000 white perch into Fort Pond. C H Schwab paints a house in Fitchburg for A F Blanchard and travels by auto daily. A H Gilmore and family relocate to the Clinton race track to oversee horses and grounds for the Clinton fair.
The West Acton Branch of the Red Cross reports the week ending May 26 with items such as sweaters, helmets, socks, bandages, pillows, knitted squares, and eye dressings. At the May 22 meeting in G A R hall seventeen members produced 220 surgical dressings and urged continued effort as the workload remains large.
George W. Mead introduces a HAL TRACTOR with Ford engine and full equipment. It has been busy at Mr. Starbuck’s farm this past week, with A. W. Davis operating the machine and handling part of the tasks.
The Thursday evening service at St George coral church drew a full congregation. Dr William Van Allen of Church of the Advent in Boston preached a stirring patriotic address. Rev A B Papineau led prayers and read the honor roll. Choir provided special patriotic music. The service flag bears 15 stars with one gold for Edward Iller, recently killed in action in France.
