Local residents host guests and service members this week

Maynard households welcomed relatives and friends from Gedden, Medway, Framingham, Worcester, Dorchester, Watertown, Acton Centre, Waltham, Newton, Brockton, Hyde Park, and Marlboro. Military personnel including Héllinus at Paris Island and others in the U S Navy and Army were noted visiting or stationed away, with several families hosting during Memorial Day and the week.

Old Horses on Exhibition at Red Acre Farm Stow

The 12th annual field day at Red Acre farm Stow showcased 80 resident horses and 25 loaned animals with Sergt Gordon and 50 troopers from Camp Devens performing cavalry drills races and Roman riding. Ribbons went to Stow residents and nearby owners while Miss Harriet Bird presented an exhibit on modern horse care. Prominent guests from Boston Weston and surrounding towns attended a band concert and a serving of refreshments.

Floral Sunday at Congregational Church Observed

Rev. Frederick N. Rutan presides over a floral Sunday with Sunday school department exercises at 7 p.m. A morning service at 10 45 includes baptism for little children. Maynard lodge I C O F and Mizpah Rebekah lodge attend the annual Memorial service, after which sessions of the primary department will be omitted.

Concord Social Ties Highlight Holiday Visitors

Mrs Wallace Calef and daughter Edna of Waltham were guests of friends in town. Bert Joslin of Bever ly visited his parents. Mrs Mary Drawbridge of Hopkin ton stayed with Mr and Mrs George Hunt. Mrs Charles Voight of Easthampton visited her parents on Everett Street. Alcott Pratt bought a Maxwell from Macone Bros. Elizabeth Thomas of New Bedford weekend guest of Josephine Love. Mademoiselle Demarest plans a Girls French camp at Lake Thirteenth Adirondacks leaving June 8. Ralph Holdenway won best 18 holes at Concord Country Club Memorial Day with 83 net. organ K Smith 90 net second. Middlesex Cup qualifying round held as well.

Letter from Joseph Keyes Reports Front-Line Life in 1918

May 5 1918 letter to his father describes travel from Repos to front near Allentown, eight kilometers from lines, and the dangers of open warfare with shells and Whiz-bangs. He notes constant travel, car breakdowns, a woodsy camp life, trench work, and observation of batteries in orchards. He mentions a diploma, receiving The Enterprise, and asks for addresses and a ribbon.

Harry Finley won the 300 yard sheet event with 24 points at Concord Rifle Club Memorial Day. Henry Martell scored 24 to win the 200 yard sheet. Francis Daley led the 3 yard sheet with 22 to finish first.

Motorcycle Collision Near Littleton Fatality Reported

Raymond Durkee of this town collided with a touring car on the State road in Littleton. He was taken to the State hospital at Ayer after the accident Sunday. A soldier stationed at Camp Devens was involved.

Memorial services planned by Assabet aerie at Union Congregational

Holiday notices list guests from Boston Worcester Sudbury Alliston and Everett. Assabet aerie F C E holds Memorial services and grave decorations next Sunday with a parade to cemeteries and public exercises.

Cambridge Officer Wins Military Cross in World War I

Lt. Francis Peabody Magoun Jr of Cambridge and formerly Bedford is awarded the Military Cross for repeated low altitude attacks on German units with bomb and machine gun fire. He is recovering in England from a severe gunshot wound received April 10. He is Harvard 1916 graduate and son of Mr. and Mrs. Magoun of 3 Concord Ave. Cambridge.

Bedford Union pupils present war pictures for Red Cross

On Tuesday evening the graduating class of Bedford Union school showed pictures of France to a large audience. Pupils explained each image while proceeds totaled 102.35 raised in five weeks by Norman E. White for the Red Cross.

Concord Junction Social Notes Highlight Local Visits

Mrs Julia Hobart visited Roxbury on Sunday. Mrs Margaret Marshall and daughter Minnie stayed with Mr and Mrs John Collins for a holiday visit. Mr and Mrs Arthur Henigan and children from Worcester spent the holiday with Mr and Mrs Patrick Reilley. Mr and Mrs Noel Christian welcomed a baby boy born last Thursday. Mr and Mrs John O Grady visited relatives in Framingham for the holiday.

The Concord Teachers' Club held its third meeting of the year on May 27 in Eaton hall. Members and guests enjoyed a rich program by the Concord Musical club with piano, violin, songs, duets, and a social hour with refreshments.

Holt Sister Dies After Sudden Illness in Lowell

Mrs. Clara E. Holt hurried to Lowell on Saturday as her sister Miss Josephine Baker grew critically ill. Baker died an hour and a half after Clara arrived. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Holt and B. S. Holt in attendance.

Miss J Katherine Richardson Weds Stanley Winter in Town

Miss J Katherine Richardson of this town married Stanley Winter Payson of Concord Junction at the bride’s mother Mrs J B Richardson's home on May 25. Reverend C L Pierce of the Baptist church officiated. Only close relatives attended. the bride and groom are well known locally. The groom departed Friday for Fort Slo Cum N Y.

Red Cross Weekly Report From West Acton

The Red Cross weekly tally for period ending June 1 lists donations including 2 prs socks for Mrs. Wm Stevens and Mrs. Moses Thompson plus other sock gifts, 0 hot water bottle covers, wristers and pajamas, hospital shirts and bandages. At May 28 special meeting two members recorded 580 surgical dressings. at May 29 regular meeting 21 members attended and completed 5 suit pajamas and 6 T binders.

Train vs Maynard At Crowe Park Next Saturday

Baseball at John A Crowe Park features Ammunition vs Maynard as the weekend attraction. Soldier’s team strengthens its lineup with heavy hitters and veteran players.
