A Brisbane column notes the Patman Bill passing by 55 to 38 to pay veterans in cash rather than a political compromise. It argues the measure would inject money into the economy, with government bonds keeping value only if government money remains solid.
Acton Grange held a meeting Tuesday with charter members among the guests. Oldest members were Hammond Taylor and Nelson Tenny. youngest were Albert P Durkee and Raymond Durkee. Certificates for twenty five year memberships were presented to several Acton and nearby residents. A skit and kitchen orchestra provided entertainment. Memorial Day observances are planned for May 28 with a joint program by local Grange groups and public attendance encouraged.
A stage musical comedy setup features a murder concealed by a shadowed window and an entangled cast led by Clifford Wells and June Warren. Strong performances by Alex MacEachern Helen Grala and Helen Vents highlight the evening amid military unit Co. H 182nd Infantry M N G backing.
Acton John Glaherty age 28 of Wal tham Massachusetts was injured when a section trailer on the Boston Maine Railroad overturned while he rode it. A tree or brush was dislodged on the bank causing the trailer to overturn pinning him under the car and dragging him several feet. Dr. Orma L. Clark treated him for a crushed chest multiple broken ribs and cinder burns from being dragged.
Memorial Day events invite ex service men and Girl Scouts from all schools to participate. The parade departs Legion Hall at 9 30 am, stops at the Library cemetery Mount Pleasant and North Sudbury with services at each site. William E Bills Sudbury’s Civil War survivor serves as honorary marshal and Alfred Bonazzoli as active marshal.
The Sudbery Men's Club met in the Town House with treasurer William EB Davison presiding. Executive committee members included Everett W Bowker and Harlan Noyes.
Sudbury held a special meeting to restore 10 percent in wages for street and fire department workers. A five member committee with two objectors and two supporters will select the fifth member to decide Article 5. Route 20 reconstruction and a $150 relief grant were discussed. Town Clerk Frank F Gerry administered the oath.
Miss Lillian Ethel Maynard of Nicholas Street Lowell and her groom from Concord were married Sunday afternoon. The bride wore white organdy and a matching hat, with a sister as maid and Leo J. Sheehan of Concord as best man. After a home reception, the couple plans a wedding tour and residence in Concord.
The St Bridget’s parish mission for women closed Sunday with full attendances. Men’s mission began Sunday night and many worshippers filled the church all week. Masses are 6:30 and 7 daily with 7:30 evening services. Next Sunday at 2 PM the annual May procession and Crowning of the Blessed Virgin will start from the church grounds led by St Bridget’s cadets and the children of the parish. A first communion class of fifty will receive at 8:30 AM. Cadets and Mary Corps meet Monday and again tonight for drill. Joyce Kilmer Circle plans a whist party at Cooperative Hall on June 7 to aid the parish camp.
Acton officials report the current tax rate at 26.80 dollars per thousand, a marginal rise from last year. Taxpayers expect the rate to be manageable though the exact impact on local bills remains under study.
A Memorial Day program in West Acton begins with a 10 15 assembly in Quimby Square and a march to the church for services at 10 30. A parade, reports from organizations at 7 30 am at West Acton Anton Center, refreshments by South Acton Improvement Association, and exercises at Mount Hope Cemetery at 10 46 followed by marker decoration at Edwards Square. Dinner at West Acton Woman's Club at 12 15 for participants. veterans of all wars invited.
Concord and area Harvard alumni gathered at the Concord Country Club for the annual meeting on May 14. Col Robert E Goodwin was elected president succeeding Dr Lawrence K Lunt of Carlisle. Officers include Edward F Loughlin Jr William Bartlett and others. The club approved a 340 scholarship for Concord high graduates and Dean Willard Speery of Harvard Divinity School spoke.
Mrs Annie Hamlin wife of Wilbur Hamlin of 22 Concord street died at home Friday night at age 78 born in Trowbridge England and resident of Maynard for 23 years. Survived by husband daughter Miss Ruby Hamlin and two grandchildren. Funeral held Sunday at home with Rev Matthew A Vance and Rev William Bolcourt. burial in Glenwood Cemetery.
On Thursday May 23 1985 Maynard Senior and Junior High pupils invite parents and friends to the annual school exhibit at the George Washington Auditorium. The auditorium opens 3 00 PM to 9 00 PM and work from every junior high pupil will be shown on each desk. Teachers will be available for parent conferences and refreshments will be served 4 00 PM to 5 00 PM led by art teacher Anne Pasakarnis.
Maynard Assabet Aerie F. O. B. held a Sunday meeting in their clubrooms electing Lester F. Cowles as Worthy President along with other officers for the ensuing year.
Burglars loaded 500 dollars worth of apparel from a local shop on River Street. Back door left ajar led to a waiting car. Items found include hats shirts and size 16 1 2 garments. Neighbor alerted police after seeing clothes in a backyard.
The seventh annual road race by the Finnish American League will be held next Sunday at 1 30 p m in ihes towns. Over fifty entries expected with notable runners including Johnnie Kelley Jimmie Hennigan Billy Zepp and Les Pawson. The event features a two mile cross country race with three prizes on the grounds afterward.
Laddie a white collie belonging to Miss Beverley Green has been missing since Saturday. The dog accompanied her to Junior High daily and guarded Edward White the mail carrier's bag and parcels for two years. License number 167 indicates local registration and anyone with information should contact the owner or Mr Edward White.
