Massachusetts Labor and Economic Updates Report January Trends
January figures from the Department of Labor and Industries show Massachusetts average weekly earnings at 41.45 dollars, with Beverly, Siney, and Chi leading cities. Despite 30,000 factory workers on strike, many industrial cities posted gains in payrolls and employment. Boston department stores exceeded 1929 peak sales by 10 percent, with January sales up 13 percent from the prior year. The ten year 1936–1946 period saw about a 50 percent shift in public school principals, and Massachusetts State College enrolls 1,000 veterans to exceed 2,000 students this fall. The State Planning Board urged a new playfield near East Boston Airport and development of a 34-acre coastal plot for recreational canoeing between Harbor View and O Heights.
