Concord notes Henry J Smith of Old Marlboro Road named to a temporary position at Concord Reformatory as many regular staff join defense work or enlist. Major Michael J Dee, superintendent, also reports 12 civilians placed in new roles to fill gaps.
William Craige Robus of Lincoln died after a long illness at home in his 70th year. A World War veteran, he served with the American Red Cross in France as an ambulance driver and held leadership roles in the American Legion and local Masonic and civic groups. Funeral services were at the Congregational church with Masonic rites at Lincoln Cemetery.
The Boston and Maine Railroad petitions the Interstate Commerce Commission for the right to abandon the four mile freight rail line between Bedford and the Massachusetts Reformatory and to use the tracks for other purposes. The line has fallen into disuse and several depots along the route are already abandoned. the Lexington and West Cambridge line dates back to 1873 when the Bedford Reformatory rails last connected with the Bedford to Boston segment.
Over the weekend at the Concord Country Club the annual round robin tennis championships began with 200 teams entered. The first three winners were Mrs Charles Edgarton and Kenneth Hayes with 17 points, Mr and Mrs Alexander Cameron with 16, and Mr and Mrs Edward Chase with 15.

Robert Wilkins of Long Branch New Jersey walked into Lexington Police Station and surrendered on charges of passing bad checks totaling 250 dollars from over a year ago. He was held in 1000 dollars by Associate Justice Edward B Caiger on a vagrancy charge to allow Long Branch Police to extradite for the more serious count.
A new softball league forms in Concord as married men consider joining a team. Games are played at Emerson Playground and at Acmarence School, featuring local players ready to compete.
Bedford Bedford Junior High School gains a large athletic field complex built under WPA supervision led by Harold Willson. The seven acre Jenks estate addition, land purchase for 7000 dollars, and extensive facilities including tennis courts and a girls field hockey area, promise enhanced programs and future municipal building potential.
Funeral services for Arthur Lincoln Griffin 77 former Concord resident who died July 15 were held at the First Parish Unitarian Church with Rev Edward P Danjiels officiating. Burial was at Sleepy Hollow cemetery. Griffin born Medford April 16 1865 was son of John Quincey Adams Griffin and Sarah Elizabeth Wood and a descendant of John Quincy Adams. His wife died three years ago. He entered theatre at 16 and served 42 years as treasurer of the G E Lothrop Theatre Corporation which owned two Boston theatres. He retired recently and belonged to the Boston City Club and the Sons of the American Revolution. Four cousins survive in Concord Courtland NY and elsewhere.
Concord residents Mr and Mrs Cecil W Gammon of Barretts Mill road marked their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday July 22. Mr Gammon works as a local caretaker and the couple have two daughters, Alice and Dorothy. Mrs Gammon was formerly Lena C Monsen.
Mrs. and Mr. Austin D. MacRae of 84 Monument Street Concord announce the engagement of their daughter Genevieve to Air Cadet Walter Ernest Stanley son of Mr and Mrs Ernest W Stanley of Bedford. Stanley is stationed at Kelley Field Texas. No wedding date set.
John Edward Brassil Jr of Bedford has been appointed Naval Aviation Cadet and transferred to Pensacola Florida for flight training. An AB graduate of Harvard he completed elimination training at Squantum Massachusetts in June and will earn a Naval Aviator designation with a commission in the Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve for active duty.
The Concord Board of Selectmen released the annual jurors list containing 85 prominent male citizens. The next board meeting is scheduled for August 11. Also noted are Mrs. Henry Murray visiting from Cambridge and John Pedersen returning from Plainfield New Jersey.
The Rationing Board in Sudbury is working overtime to manage sugar rubber and gas rationing. Officials keep late hours including nights and Sundays to serve the public as residents move into the area along Concord Road from Frank Mortoy.
The Knights of Columbus in Concord hosted a reception for district deputy Robert J. Muldoon of Somerville at Monument hall. About 60 members attended a catered supper, with remarks from Rev. Walter Quinlan Rev. George Mulcahy and retiring grand knight William Bulger Jr and incoming grand knight T Francis Coyne. A surprise tribute presented navy enlistment gifts to Bulger and Coyne, who are both headed for service, followed by motion pictures by Rothwell MacRae. Installations for officers were planned for August 4 and 11.
William John Hillock 58 of 10 Pond Lane West Concord was struck by a westbound train while walking along tracks with his housekeeper near his home. He died instantly and his body was moved to Joseph Dee Sons funeral home. Burial followed at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. He leaves a daughter Mrs John Peterson a sister Mrs Made H Marshall and four grandchildren.
U S Navy announces a recruiter will be in Concord at the Naval Recruiting Substation Lowell on July 24 31 August 7 14 21 and 28 from 1030 to 12 noon. Young men seeking information about joining may contact the recruiter for details.
The Concord school committee met July 16 to approve new appointments and shifts for fall. William H. Taunton will teach music and coach at Concord High School while Ralph F. Ward moves to biology and mathematics and coaches track. Minna A. Findeisen becomes vice principal at Peter Bulkeley School. Charles J. Warner will teach at Peter Bulkeley and Frank J. Goosins is named supervisor of guidance placement. Bernard Megin and Albert E. Robinson take on football, basketball, and baseball coaching roles.
Walden Pond hosted the annual Concord Red Cross Chapter swimming exhibition after five weeks of classes. About 200 children from Concord West Concord Acton Lincoln Bedford participated with Mrs Eigar A Rohan as chair and a team of co directors and volunteers guiding beginners intermediates and advanced swimmers.
Concord reports local couples marking anniversaries. John R. Kennedy and wife of Hillside Avenue West Concord observed their 36th on July 16. Clark V. Doty and Aljean Nyland celebrated their third on July 15. Alexander Reid of Crest Street marked their 42nd observance Tuesday.
The 1942 Coun try Club golf event postponed over the weekend with semifinals and finals delayed. John B. Buttrick competes at Weland but could not meet Robert Goodale in the semi finals. Johnston won his semi final, leaving Thompson Jr. as current holder serving in Uncle Sam's Army. the final will be a 36 hole match for the club title.
The Concord Lions Club schedules a July 28 dinner at Wright’s Tavern with the business session to follow at 5 45 PM The air raid warden post drill will occur the same evening Pres Rothwell N MacRae presiding The club plans a cotta cook at Lion Aus D MacRae’s home and a joint meeting with Lexington Lions Club on August 11 at the Muske Sportsmen’s Club grounds
Concord mourns Miss Margaret McInerney 66 who died Saturday after a long illness. A high mass at St Bernard’s Church was sung by Rev F Mulcahy. Burial followed at St Bernardina Cemetery. Survived by two sisters. Family lived in Concord.
