Maynard selects agenda for March 12 including 15,000 for a new bridge at Mill Corner to replace the flood destroyed structure. Plans cost about 45,000 with state county and town thirds. finance committee lists departmental appropriations across town operations.
Division 56 Ancient Order of Hibernians held a whist gathering at Highlands to raise funds for the Working Boys Home. Prizes went to Mrs John Manning, Miss Hill, Mrs Mary Far, and others. Edward Hanley and J Culkins led the men’s side. Committee chair Powers Jr. led the event with several assistants. a town electric outage briefly paused activities but did not dampen spirits.
Jaynard reports a Past Chancel Night at a Progressive Lodge of P K P meeting in February. Thomas Reck led ceremonies with former chancellors including Thomas Ch Burgess Dickey and John West. A smoker and luncheon followed. arrangements were by a committee led by Charles Ent and John Edwards with Ralph P and Joseph Schnair.
At a Veterans meeting the old James J. Mansfield American Legion post was dissolved and a new post formed. The name stays the same with Herbert B. chosen as commander. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Fairbanks.
In Concord the Women's Parish Association met in the First Parish vestry on Monday afternoon. Rev Dr Johannes A C Fagginger Auer led a devotional service before a program of entertainment. Mrs G Walter Vialle sang with accompaniment by Mrs Alfred M Uhler. The association voted funds to the Florence Crittenton League and the Tuckerman School. Principal speaker Rev Mr Pennington of Lincoln delivered a thoughtful address on The Public Mind, followed by a lively discussion.
The funeral for Mary Eleanor Curtin ten year old daughter of Sgt Daniel J Curtin and Mary Dumas was held at St Bernard's Church Concord Mass with a high mass of requiem and a burial at St Bernards cemetery Mary had lived in Concord after being born in Medfield and was in the fifth grade at the Harvey Wheeler School Her parents and three brothers survive and many friends attended the service
Miss Evelyn Wallace of Somerville is spending the week with Miss Edna Jones, returning to her home after the visit.
Mrs Warren B Goddard has returned from New York after a week with relatives and friends.
Officials at the Assabet Institution For Savings honor president Charles H. Persons with a portrait after his illness. The piece notes the bank’s history since 1904, Persons leadership, and the bank’s strong growth to deposits of about 1.6 million with substantial reserves.
An official dismisses reports that Henry Ford bought the Assabet mill to make upholstery cloth or to convert the plant into an airplane factory. The rumor spread in Maynard and neighboring towns, with alleged land-price interviews by Ford interests near the Gately farm.
Two women were injured and several others were badly shaken in two automobile accidents in Concord Junction on a holiday. In Grover Street a sedan driven by Gustus Grover collided with a touring car owned by Edith Johnson and driven by her brother Roland V E Johnson, injuring Edith and her mother. The Johnson car was badly damaged and Grover’s car left the scene after a left turn across the street. A second crash on Elm Street involved a car owned by Thos McMurray. after skidding on ice it struck a telephone pole. The other vehicle, driven by Leslie W. Martin, carried Florence Lowell, A Bacon, and Harry J. Lee.
Henry Verner Jamieson died at his home shortly after returning from a dog show in Boston. Born July 13 1868 in Cape Breton Prince Edward Island he moved to Concord from Boxboro a year ago and led Charles Carruttis Concordian kernels on Lexington road. He left a wife Helen and a daughter. Funeral services were held at Mt. Auburn Crematory Chapel conducted by Rev Smith Owen Dexter.
Maynard February 29 several members attended a weekly social whist at Mrs. Margaret Whitney home. Prizes awarded to Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Weaver. A Grange meeting at Cooperative hall featured a patriotic program with flag salute and songs. Readings by Nellie Sunderland and Edmund Whitney. Grace Tucker won Washington game. Men beat women in two contests. A large American flag cake and red white blue candy were made by Adelaide Sims. Next meeting hosts include Mrs. Howe and Mrs. Adams.
The 4H Clothing Club held its semi annual exhibition at Union School in South Sudbury on February 23. Many visitors attended. Isabel Stone displayed a finished dress. Miss Smith of Pena Losex County Extension Service gave an engaging talk on club work and invited all members to a party.
In Concord the Caucus nominees won key seats though opposition claimed the largest vote total in years. Raymond Wheeler edged Harold Orendorff for selectman by 107 votes, while in the five-candidate school committee race Minnie C Moore led with 917 votes, Ruth Rodday 872, and Wells Blanchard 860. Hennessy and Ruth R. Wheeler were defeated. Other officers elected included Town Clerk Wm D Cross and various town posts.
The Sudbury Forum met to discuss items in the Town Warrant and a highway department overdraft. Fire protection extensions and electric lighting are debated after a list shows over $100,000 lost to fires in recent years, with specific losses at Old Music Hall, Refuse house, Estabrook, Babe Ruth barn, Wayside Inn barn, and other properties.
The First National Cooperative Association announced a 5 percent dividend on all purchases in its retail department including milk bread and meats. Sales rose over 2000 from last year and a paint line with Lowe Bros agency will be added Mar 15. Directors include John Nokelainen Vesta Taival and W F Williams.
Mrs Lindbergh mother of Col Lindbergh joins a Boston Educa tion convention party for a tour of inspection at the Wayside Inn Sudbury. The group travelled in the Governor s car with Chauffeur E F O Brien and dined at the inn after touring. Mrs Lindbergh wore King s blue silk and engaged with staff about pictures and school work.
The Concord Lodge of Elks held its fourth annual anniversary banquet and dance at Veterans' Building on Tuesday evening. Ladies Night drew over 260 members and guests for feast, toasts, and entertainment with Exalted Ruler Austin D. Mac Rae as toastmaster and notable speakers including Wentworth Stewart. The event featured Brigham and Poole's orchestra and an active committee led by Magara W. Sheehan.
Mrs Novak mother of four was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Gre Road near L. W. Jones Tire Shop Sunday night. Dr Raymond attended after she was brought home by George Stewart. She suffered a fractured skull hip lacerations and facial abrasions. The driver, in a Chevrolet, fled. identity unknown.
Mrs Francis B Sayre daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson will speak on the League of Nations at the West Concord Woman's meeting next Friday after noon in Odd Fellows Hall Tea will be served by Mrs Harold Shepard Maynard Wling team defeated the total and took in Midland bowling.
Sudbury's basketball team fell to Hudson High School 18 points from star center Alton Clarks led Sudbury, but early defense let Hudson build a commanding lead. The next game hosts Southboro on March 9 with both boys and girls teams slated to play.
Sudbury February 29 The Raymond Scholarship with a prize of 150 dollars has been presented to Waldo E Stone. The award was made by Rev George Clarke. Stone, a Sudbury High School student, is working toward an A.B. at Tufts College.
