A home garden seed note mentions a new birth in the Massaralli family of Waltham Street on Wednesday. Various locals visit, travel and work in nearby towns, with socials, club meetings, and enlistments noted.
Privates Albert and Ernest Rasmus sen, sons of Mr and Mrs Rasmussen of Glendale, recently met in France after four months with the American Expeditionary Forces. The brothers, once unable to visit, were joyfully reunited and both in good health.
The Jolly Eight Social club was hosted by Mrs Irving Dart on Concord Street Wednesday afternoon with Miss Adelaide Weil in attendance. Whist was played and refreshments served. Prizes were won by Miss Mabel Bishop first and Miss Grace Bishop second.
A newspaper note observes Valentine’s Day passed with no comic Valentines on display, a change from prior years. The absence of vulgar pieces is seen as a pleasant departure from the day’s usual customs.
Dr. Raward Flaherty appointed medical examiner for Mayard recruits. Charles Warren reports ten locals enrolled as enrollment agent. The Merchant Marine seeks thousands for new cargo fleets. P. H. DeLee drug store serves as enrollment station with full details on request.
The 1917 town reports are issued. Residents visited include Gene Sanborn and Mrs Granville Holden. Misses Alice and Lavinia Axon from Lowell. Eva Ward of Somerville. others hosting relatives in town. Local events include ice hockey plans with Middlesex and Milton, a Pomona Grange gathering, and a War Relief sale. John M Keyes elected Mass Highway Association president. a new Maxwell car sold to Allen French. A baby boy named Lloyd born to Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Wilson.
Henry McBreen barely escaped serious injury while trimming trees on Lexington Road last week. He fell about 35 feet toward a pond and landed within a foot of an oak stump. He was rushed to the hospital and treated for only minor bruises.
West Acton residents host visitors and mark events including March 4 town meeting. Camp Devens personnel, local exchanges, fuel committee actions, and the West Acton Woman's Club meetings and speaker George LaPanier are noted along with Sunday church services and local visits.
The notice says no electric cars will run until April 1 and perhaps May 1. The public and daily riders suffer as commuting becomes walking, with no evening or weekend service available to reach outlying areas or assist others in need.
Maynard residents and events appear in a weekly roundup. John Gallagher Maynard confined to home due to illness. Michael Kelley enlisted as wireless operator and heads to Portland Maine for merchant service. Carl A Parsons and Dr Carl Parsons enlisted in U S service with Railway Transportation corps and U S Medical Reserve corps respectively. The water department works on frozen pipes while the Dorcas society sews. The sophomore class hosts a Valentine party for freshmen. The Federal Agricultural Bureau plans a farm survey led by Supt. Millington with school children assisting.
Mrs Lena M Fiske died unexpectedly at Deaconess Hospital last Wednesday. Funeral held at Edward H Torrey home with Rev Smith Owen Dexter officiating and Willow Rebekah lodge officers assisting. Burial in Charles Town New Hampshire followed church services. Survived by mother Mrs Sparrow brother Harry P Sparrow and son Charles Fiske.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Concord Grange met at Mrs. Frank Kennié's home on Tuesday afternoon February 12 with 10 ladies present. A business session followed by a supper prepared by the hostess featured rolls sandwiches salad pies cake tea and cocoa.
Andrew Jackson Abbott died in Methuen on February 11 at age 73. A former Concord resident, he lived in Hildreth Corner and drove a milk route for years. The couple spent summers at a Concord cottage near Barrett's Mill Road. funeral held Wednesday. An ice hockey postponement between Middlesex School and Milton High affected the schedule last Saturday.
