Massachusetts Faces Polio Vaccine Push From State and Nation
Massachusetts moves to provide Salk polio vaccine free to children age 14 and under and pregnant mothers with a plan to extend to ages 15–19 later. Hospitals and clinics will receive doses funded by the National Polio Foundation and through state and federal programs. Health Commissioner Samuel B. Kirkwood cautions the vaccine is not absolutely safe but offers far greater benefits, saying it safeguards against paralysis and marks progress toward a safer, ongoing vaccine development.
