School Work Summer Repairs Underway At Concord High

The Concord High School accelerates repairs and new equipment this summer. Mechanic arts shop upgrades include forges, fans, and dust removal. Enrollment is rising with 468 students. fall total projected near 475. Playground programs flourish with high attendance and supervised activities across grounds.

Concord man arrested for theft of brass eagle from wood home

Stephen Ruest was arrested in Concord after taking a brass eagle from the flag pole at Mrs. James K. Wood’s Main Street home. He faced charges of larceny and riding a motorcycle without a license, with the latter case fined five dollars and suspended until September 17. Cambridge police later held him on a larceny warrant.

Drowning at Lake Walden Claims 28-Year-Old Otto Swenson

Otto Swenson of Waltham drowned Sunday morning at Lake Walden while swimming across Thoreau's Cove. Companions tried to rescue him as he disappeared in 18 feet of water. Medical Examiner Walcott ruled heart failure. Swenson, 28, formerly of Concord, had recent work in Waltham and will be buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery after a Wednesday funeral at Sleepy Hollow chapel.

Vacationing milliner and local notes at large

Miss Josephine Whittaker visits York beach from Miss Rose Mantha’s millinery. A one cent sale at Snow pharmacy drew good trade and satisfied all concerned. A fire alarm sent York department to Augustus Conant’s Monument street house to extinguish a chimney fire on the afternoon of the 10th. Edward B. Caiger resumed duties as organist at the West Acton Baptist church after a several week vacation.

Fire starts in friend's block kitchen blaze causes burns

An afternoon fire at Dr. C. B Towne's apartment in Friend's block was traced to a broken wood alcohol bottle in the kitchen. The flames damaged woodwork and Dr Towne burned his hands trying to smother them. Estimated loss about 15 dollars.

Highway taxes questioned in Concord Enterprise letter

John M. Keyes denies Concord Enterprise claim that highway taxes doubled, presenting town meetings data for 1914 and 1915. He notes road tax rising from 23,600 to 31,000 dollars with 5,000 carried from last year, and outlines notes and bonds payments for bridges and streets to argue taxes for roads did not double.
