In a Paris letter from September 6 1944 Lt Lannes Hope aboard a U S tank recalls a delirious welcome from crowds of French citizens as American forces entered the city. He notes flowers on his tank, champagne and coffee in china cups, and children and women kissing soldiers amid a joyous yet war scarred backdrop. He likens the countryside to West Texas and reports mixed moods among displaced Germans and locals.

Fox Hunters Set All Day Hunt at Olden Ferrell Valley Ranch

The Comanche County Fox Hunters Association will host an all day fox hunt on Friday September 29 at the Olden Ferrell Valley Ranch between Sidney and Comanche. Officials promise plenty of barbecue meals and an exciting day with many fox hounds. A beach show is planned Friday morning and the public is invited to attend with or without guests.

Cpl Buster Cates Killed in Action in France

Energy resident G D Cates received notice that his son Cpl Frank H Cates known as Buster was killed in action on August 26 in France. He served four years and participated in North Africa Sicily and Italy invasions before landing with American forces in Southern France. His two brothers Alvin and Virduel Cates also serve overseas. The War Department letter expressed regret over the loss.

A I Coker Sr Dies Suddenly at Camp Bowie

Alford J. Coker a well known Comanche mechanic at Camp Bowie died suddenly Wednesday morning at 10 45 after feeling ill following three hours work. Funeral services are planned at the Comanche Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. He was 52 and survived by his wife Bess Hicks two sons Sgt L T Coker serving in France and A J Coker Jr in the U S Navy in Panama.

Record Harvest Of A Record Peanut Crop In Comanche County

The 1944 peanut crop in Comanche County is reported as among the best in years with around 40 tons weighed and sold daily. J. D. Beaty of Fairview marketed the season’s first load on September 2. Prices have ranged from 1.87 to 2.53 per bushel depending on grade.

Comanche County Surgical Dressing Center Receives Final 1944 Quota

Mrs. A. P. Cox reports the last 1944 surgical dressing quota has arrived and work starts Monday afternoon on bandages for the Armed Forces. A large quota is available, with help needed to finish in about three weeks. The center operates on weekday afternoons and Thursday evenings in the Comanche County Courthouse.

Gustine Sergeant Honored In Italy

Sergeant John B. Johnson from Route 1 Gustine Texas received the Combat Infantryman Badge for actual combat while with the 36th Texas Infantry Division on the Fifth Army front in Italy. The War Department recently authorized the decoration and described it as a silver rifle against infantry blue within a silver wreath.
