Scouts Rally for Paper Drive In Comanche War Effort

On Sunday September 17 the Boy Scouts of Comanche will conduct a citywide house to house paper drive as part of the National Scrap Paper campaign running August 20 to September 20. Each person is asked to donate twenty pounds, with driving proceeds funding a new club house.

Pipes Selected for Fitzsimons Surgical School

Pfc. They Pipes, husband of Billye Jo Barnes of Comanche, was chosen from his medical detachment at Camp Chaffee Arkansas to attend Fitzsimons Surgical School in Denver Colorado for four months. The program at Fitzsimons General Hospital with 680 beds accelerates what would take four years of medical training. Upon completion he will be stationed at a hospital for recovering soldiers.

Comanche Schools Report 824 Enrolled This Week

The Comanche Public Schools count 824 students after the first week of the 1944-45 term. High School 291, Grammar 258, West Ward 275, with 18 transfer pupils from Hasse High School. New teachers include Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Harris. faculty now totals 29.

Ensign J C Huett Receives Distinguished Service Medal

Ensign James C. Huett, USMS 20, son of Mr and Mrs W H Huett of Comanche Texas, awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for heroism during enemy action aboard the SS William T Coleman. He helped separate ships under fire near Tripoli harbor, saving their cargo of TNT and high octane fuel. Prior service included a 1942 radio training and a Sicily invasion shuttle run. He married Berneice J Casterline in 1943 and aims for MIT.

Sisler Killed in France in World War II Action

Clifford B. Sisler husband of former Miss Jean Stevens of Comanche was killed in action in France on June 9. He had served overseas since January and had six years in the Army. Mrs. Sisler is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Stevens of Comanche.

Local Soldiers in Outstanding Regiment In Italy

Pfc. Wilbern J. Yates and Pfc. Charley H. Wilkins of Comanche serve with the 351st Regiment, Fifth Army in Italy. The unit drove Germans from Minturno to the Arno, entering Rome area after two months of patrols and fierce house to house fighting. The 351st was the division’s first to enter combat overseas and to earn a Distinguished Service Cross.

Brothers Meet On Guadalcanal After Reunited Chance

Harold D. Stuckey Sr and Phili c A J Stuckey Jr, sons of A J Stuckey Sr of Comanche, recently met on Guadalcanal after a letter from Stuckey. Harold has been there since February, Jr aboard an L S S that stopped there. They shared chow a movie and beach talk and said they could have talked another week. Stuckey Sr notes the place has changed and they still enjoy The Chief in California.

Mercer Dies in San Angelo Former Comanche County Resident

A P Mercer, 58, former Comanche County resident, died Tuesday in San Angelo where he had lived for years. Funeral services were held there Thursday. He was brother to Wade Mercer and uncle to Mrs. Max Keeter. Survived by widow Ola Clark and three children Homer, Carl, and Faye, with Lloyd Mercer killed in July in the Army Air Corps. Mrs. Mercer is sister of Mrs. Less Dillard.

Pfc Amos T Jones Drives Supplies From Ports To Forts

Pfc Amos T. Jones from Comanche Texas has served six months in the European Theater with the Combat Support Wing of the Air Service Command. The unit transports equipment and supplies from ports to forward stations, delivering gasoline ammunition and other materiel under challenging conditions. Jones previously worked as a ranch hand before enlisting in September 1942 and is part of a team praised for efficiency and resilience in adverse weather and fog.

Dale Waldrop Honored At Fleet Post Office School

William Dale Waldrop of Comanche Texas was among honor graduates at the Fleet Post Office Training School in New Orleans. The first class graduates learn methods for handling Navy mail problems. Waldrop, former Perry Brothers manager, holds no prior post office experience and aims for a petty officer rating. He attended Comanche High School and played football in 1930 31 32. After rating, he may be sent overseas to relieve a long-absent post office colleague.
