Mount Pleasant Farmer Arie Patton Dies in Suspected Natural Cause

Arie Patton, 33, a Mount Pleasant farmer, was found dead around 10 p.m. Saturday near the Jim Godfrey home after a two hour search when he failed to return from a morning visit to a peanut thresher. The death was attributed to natural causes, with family noting prior illnesses. Funeral services were held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Surviving wife Irene Newsome and eight month old daughter greet the loss along with his mother, siblings, and extended family.

Indians Open 1945 Season at Coleman In Battle for Gridiron

Comanche High School Indians under coach Con McMillan travel to Coleman for the 1945 season opener. Veteran captain Richard Armstrong leads an eight man returning backfield with co captains Gene Arthur and Harold Pate. Probable starters include Brooks and Dudley as ends, Hicks and Wilkerson as tackles, Hicks and Phifer as guards, Samuels at center, with Arthur and J Samuels at backs. Riley sidelined briefly. Coleman had tied Goldthwaite 0-0 last week and lost to the Bluecats 34-0 the prior season opener. The Indians expect a tough test against a strong Coleman squad in tonight’s game.

Residential Addition Opens on Salt Decal Highway

A new restricted residential addition is opened in Comanche on the Salt Decal Highway by J W Robinson and Odis Petsick of Gustine with J P Eanes of Comanche as sales agent. Mr Petsick recently bought a residence and 66 acres here from Mrs J R Skinner. the tract has been laid off into lots and streets and offered for sale.

Comanche attorney George E. Smith remains in serious condition at All Saints Hospital Fort Worth after a major operation on Tuesday. He was reported improved Thursday.

Pfc Humphrey Liberated From Japanese Prison

Pfc. A. L. Humphrey Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Humphrey of Comanche Route 3, has been liberated in Japan after being a prisoner of war since the Fall of Bataan in May 1942. He returned to military control on 10 September 1945 and will be returned to the United States soon, with a chance to communicate with his family on arrival.

Three Texas WWII soldiers honored with next of kin medals

The Camp Bowie ceremonies August 21 presented Purple Hearts and Citations to the widows and families of three fallen soldiers. S/ Sgt. Austin Van Hooser received a Purple Heart and a posthumous Medal for heroism in Germany on March 16, 1945, when he shielded a wounded comrade during an air attack and was mortally wounded. Mrs. Van Hooser received the Purple Heart. The event marked the first time three next of kin were honored in a single review, with Col. Alfred G. Brown presiding and Major Thomas C. Wilkinson reading citations. The 2411th AGF Band provided music.

Brightman to Establish White Auto Store Here

Oswell Briman, a local business man, closed a contract in Wichita Falls Tuesday to open a White Auto Store in the Brightman Building at the square’s northwest corner. Brightman and his father will keep the feed business, moving it to the adjacent building now used as a feed storage warehouse. White Auto Stores are locally owned in 89 Texas and Oklahoma towns with a buying contract from the White Auto Wholesale Plant at Wichita Falls. Remodeling and fixture installation will begin immediately for a full line of auto parts, household goods, appliances, sporting goods, hardware and more.

Mrs W A Shelton Dies in California Rites at Stephenville

Mrs. W. A. Shelton age 66 longtime Comanche and Stephenville resident owned a ladies ready to wear store. Died at a Los Angeles hospital after months of illness. Funeral in Stephenville Thursday at 6 30 p m. She lived in Stephenville before moving to Comanche 25 years ago and then California ten years. Survived by three children Ferro Williams Jas W Clarke and Dick Holcomb. Husband W A Shaiton died about 20 years ago. Sister to D K Doyle former editor of The Chief now in Fort Worth.
