City seeks 50 000 bond issue for Main Street paving Co manche

Petitioners plan to ask the City Council at the next meeting to order a bond election of 50 000 dollars to pave main streets where cooperation is possible. County Judge R A Luker backs the plan, arguing paving will improve traffic, property values, and overall town streets by concentrating maintenance on heavy traffic arteries.

Car hits cotton truck injuring driver near Comanche

I E Osborne injured five miles from Comanche on Priddy road when his Dodge touring car collided with a truck loaded with eight bales of cotton. He suffers two broken ribs and bruises, is taken to Comanche, treated, and later sent home. The truck belongs to Jesse Mercantile Co., of Priddy, driven by Willie Hiller who is absolved of blame. One bale burst, scattering cotton along the roadside. Osborne plans to petition for a local election to pave streets, urging neighbor signatures for unanimous support.

Band Concert Tonight by Comanche and De Leon Groups

A joint concert by the Comanche and De Leon bands will be held tonight at 8 p.m. at the Band Stand on the courthouse lawn, announced by Harmon Howard, the director.

No bids for highway ten work in Comanche County

With the Texas Highway Commission adjourned, Abilene member W R Ely said no bids were received for a 10 mile grading and drainage project on Highway 10 from Comanche toward Brownwood. The job will be re-advertised at the next contract meeting as plans were only recently completed. Hugh Williams of Daniel Baker visited his parents, Mr and Mrs C F Williams.

State Democratic leaders name county chairs for Comanche

R. L. Lane of Fleming will serve as County Chairman and Mrs. J W Reese as Chairman of Women’s Organizations for Comanche county for the Democratic Party in the coming Presidential election. The announcement from State Headquarters at Dallas lists county chairmen and urges a strong vote in November with party organization cooperation.

Beattie Plans Thanksgiving Community Fair

Beattie community club meets to celebrate the completion of the Beattie school development program with a Thanksgiving Day fair at the school. The two year effort included a new community hall and improvements funded by a $2,000 bond issue. Exhibits will cover livestock poultry textiles field crops and canning.

State Enlarged Dept Warehouse in Comanche County

The State Highway Department completed an eleven year lease with C. F. and E. Denny for The Denny Warehouse to expand storage and warehouse space. County Road Foreman John S. Hart noted existing material stockpiles and said the new quarters will provide one of the district’s best storage rooms for materials and machinery used in maintaining the four state maintained highways crossing Comanche county.

Two Arrests for Liquor Sales in De Leon

Sheriff J T Gilbreath City Marshal John Nabors and Deputy Lee Bills arrested two men in De Leon on a Saturday charge of selling liquor. Ike Loggins was released on a 500 bond and bound over to the Grand Jury for whiskey sales. Ben Furnace received a similar bond for alleged beer sales.

Estimates Prepared for Rush Creek Regraveling Project

Engineers from the District Highway Office in Waco will prepare cost estimates for graveling Rush Creek and regraveling to De Leon. The work is considered for possible hot topping in the future budgeting, though no plans are currently contemplated.

First Ginners Report Shows Decline in Comanche County

The first official ginners report for Comanche county indicates 98 bales ginned before Sept compared with 228 on the same date in 1927, per John H. Harris, Special Agent.

W. D. Carroll and Ira Gerganess purchased the T. and P. Filling Station from Joe Tupin on Monday. The new owners will continue selling T. P. gas and oil products and automobile accessories at the former White and McGlothlin station.

Local milk firm plans new sweet milk routes

The Hico Ice and Cold Storage Co. intends to establish multiple sweet milk routes from the Comanche plant. Garland Tunnell, en route from Comanche to Sidney for a dairymen meeting, said routes will develop if Beattie residents cooperate. Additional routes may run through Fleming Gustine Priddy and Downing with early next week meetings. The Sidney route could start within two weeks.

Dr. Ory Acknowledged as Texon Hospital Chief Surgeon

Dr. W. Ory leaves Comanche to head the Texon Hospital owned by the Texon Company. The hospital, one of the largest in the region, previously had Dr. P. F. Chilton from Comanche as chief who resigned due to ill health. Ory, a leading regional physician, began practice in Comanche in 1904 after two years in Comyn, studied in Chicago in 1917, practiced in Ft Worth, then returned to Comanche in 1920, retired briefly in April 1927, and now assumes the Texon role. Meanwhile Miss Dorothy Shelton departed Saturday for Belton to resume Baylor studies.

Diversified Farming Boosts Cotton Yields at Luker Farm

On Mercer Creek, Tom and Mrs Luker report 18 bales of cotton for fall sale from 220 acres. Their 36 acre patch yields promising early picks with estimates of up to 20 bales. They credit early planting by May 1 and regular plowing to combat boll weevils, keeping fallen squares covered. Paul Luker, 19, already has three bales from twelve acres and aims for mining engineering studies at a Texas college.
