List of Grand and Petit Jurors for Fall District Court

The fall term grand and petit juries for District Court are drawn and set to convene on October 14. District Clerk Hugh Estes released the list, naming hundreds of jurors from Comanche, De Leon, Dublin, Sipe Springs, Gustine, and nearby areas.

Governor O'Daniel Makes Comanche Stop On West Texas Visit

Governor W. Lee O'Daniel toured Comanche on a trip en route to Brownwood visiting Representative Frank Howington at his farm east of town. Local barber Homer Thompson greeted the governor and Mayor M. Coleman accompanied him to several stores. The party met with Brown County official Penrose Metcalfe in May and heard from officials that the Forty-Eighth Legislature should prove itself. The governor urged a cash basis for state finances and noted local farmers shifting from cotton to peanuts and sweet potatoes.

Seven County Singing Meet Set for Comanche in December

One of the largest gatherings of singers in the region will convene December 14 and 15 at Comanche. Eastland Mills Coleman and Erath counties are represented along with Comanche, promising a premier local singing event in years.

Ray Profett Opens Grocery Store In Comanche

Ray Profett this week opened a new grocery store in Comanche located in the front of the J. E Morris Furniture Building. He will continue operating his produce business just south of the Morris Building, with Shorty Coker in charge of the store.

Anthonys Welcome Daughter Kay Earlene in Fort Worth

Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Anthony of Comanche announce the birth of a daughter Kay Earlene on Monday September 11 at All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. The baby weighed eight pounds. Dr E Anthony Jr, brother of Boyd Anthony, was the attending physician. They expect to return to Comanche in about ten days.

Cotton Parity Checks Arrive at County ACA Office

U S Government checks totaling 4733.00 were received at the County ACA office this week as the first payment on the 1940 cotton parity. County Secretary J W Roberson Jr said about 37000.00 more would be received during the year and notices will be mailed to farmers whose checks have arrived.

Sidney Eagles Meet Gustine Tigers in Valley Class B Game

The Sidney Eagles and Gustine Tigers clash at Comanche Ball Park Thursday night September 26 at 8 in a Pecan Valley Class B football match. Whitey Morris coaches Sidney and D. A. Swope coaches Gustine. Admission is 10 15 and 25 cents.

William Reese, long-time Comanche Baptist official dies at 84

William Reese of Comanche, an 84 year old Baptist leader, served 45 years as an association official and 35 years as Buckner Orphans Home chairman. He arrived in Comanche in 1891 and raised funds and supplies including eggs fruit and jars for the Dallas home. Born in Kaufman County near Rockwall, he joined Canton church in 1888 and taught Sunday School for decades.

NYA Interviews Scheduled Today in Comanche

Fifteen Marriage Licenses Issued in Comanche County

Fifteen marriage licenses issued recently in Comanche County, a slight rise from last year, says County Clerk Mary Fields. The list includes couples married in late August and early September, with names such as J S Findley and Velma Kimmel, Norman Hall and Elizabeth Ward, and J C Helm Jr with Ruth Isham, among others.

Sipe Springs Red Hawks Defeat Blanket 12 0 in IL 38-B Opener

Sipe Springs Red Hawks won 12 to 0 against Blanket last Friday in their first Interscholastic League game. Herman Zellars had a 40 yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Charlie Ray Elliott scored in the third. Coach M. B. Miller, formerly of Daniel Baker, leads the team at Sidney Park today.

Mrs Emma Anderson Dies In Michigan

Mrs Emma Anderson aged 59 died in Lansing Michigan on September 12 after months of illness. Funeral services were conducted in Lansing September 16 and she was buried at Lake Odessa. She was born in Comanche County Texas and lived here most of her life. Surviving children are Cecil Anderson of Sayreville New Jersey and Mrs Reba Estep of Lansing. She was the sister of Maude Kelley Berta Kelley and D W Long of Comanche.

Box Supper Friday Night At Hasse

A box supper and program will be held Friday night at the Hasse gymnasium on September 20. Proceeds go to athletic equipment per Robert Sneed superintendent. He urges all in the Hasse community to attend.

Mrs. Arminda Moore 96, Comanche’s oldest woman, dies

Arminda Falkner Moore, 96, longtime Comanche resident and oldest local woman, died Tuesday at her daughter Mrs. C. C. Shankle’s home in Comanche. Funeral services were held Wednesday at South Leon Baptist Church in Newburg, with interment in Newburg Cemetery. She was born February 26, 1844 in Alabama and married W. J. Moore September 27, 1865 in Texas. She lived in Leon and Comanche counties most of her life and leaves daughters Mrs. Fannie Cobb and Mrs. Henry Couch.

Singing School Opens Monday At Local Church

A fifteen day singing school opens Monday night September 23 at the Church of Christ in Comanche. Damon Smith of San Saba will lead the sessions. The church pays Mr. Smith, and attendance is free for all interested.

Mrs. M. L. Hays 76 Dies at Sipe Springs

Mary Leslie Atkinson born in Darlington South Carolina December 12 1864 married Dr M L Hays at 25. They moved to Texas in 1905 settling at Bibb then Sipe Springs in 1916. Survived by children Charlie Fay Frank and Vance with funeral at Sipe Springs Methodist Church and burial in Sipe Springs Cemetery.

Beaumont woman Belle Lanfear 87 dies after long illness

Mrs Belle Lanfear 87 died at her daughter Mrs J A Montgomery's home in Comanche on Thursday Sept 12 after a long illness. Born December 30 1852 in Arkansas she was a pioneer in Comanche County and had lived in Elgin Beaumont and Comanche with several marriages and children. Funeral at Albin Cemetery with Minister Ledbetter of the Comanche Church of Christ officiating. out of town relatives included grandsons Walter Montgomery San Antonio and Curtis Montgomery.
