De Leon Man Drowns While Trying to Save Children
Merlin Gilchrest a 45 year old De Leon farmer drowned in the Leon River five miles southeast of De Leon while attempting to rescue two of his children and a neighbor child learning to swim. His body was recovered by divers about thirty minutes after he sank. Funeral services were held at De Leon on Monday afternoon.

Waggoner to Report for Army Exam at Fort Sill
Reginald K. Waggoner of Comanche National Bank received orders from Eighth Corps Area HQ at Fort Sam Houston to report to Fort Sill for an examination between September 20 and October 15. He earned a Second Lieutenant rating in May 1939 from the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill and may be sent to Camp Dix, New Jersey, for a year of training after completing 160 hours of maneuvers at Fort Sill.

The 1937 Comanche Senior class donated an automatic clock and bell system for the high school to automate class bells and dismissals. The clock cost a little over seventy dollars and was funded from the class treasury, with Ted Durham as class president and other officers overseeing the project. Governor W Lee O Daniel will visit Comanche on September 18 as part of a four week tour to meet Texas legislators in their homes. He will travel with Mrs O Daniel and their sons Pat and Mike.
