Coring tests begin at the Walter Barret Ranch site for a proposed Comanche Lake to augment water supply. McClelland officials say ten days for coring and twenty days for soil analysis to draft specifications for a watershed of 38 square miles.
The Band Mothers Club runs cold drink stands and sells football programs at all home games to raise funds for instruments repairs uniforms and transportation for out of town trips. Proceeds support the local school band and help ensure programs are available for fans.
The District Court Fall term jurors are named by Clerk Ben Wilhelm. J M Hathcock and D B Burk owners of the Comanche Electric Company announce their appointment as Crosley dealers. They list Crosley Shelvador refrigerators radios radio phonographs gas and electric ranges home freezers and laundry equipment soon available.
Members of the Comanche County NFLA will hold their annual meeting in the district court room in Comanche Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20 at 2:00 o'clock. D. W. Long, president, urges stockholders and anyone interested in farm credit to attend. An educational program includes B. C. Langley speaking on new work at the West Cross Timbers Experiment Station. Higginbotham Motor Company will present a film with International Harvester. Long says 10% dividend checks will be given to stockholders present, signaling a new low net cost of money for 1947.
O L Price 71 longtime Sidney Stag Creek resident died Friday September 12 in a Brownwood hospital after extended illness Funeral services were held Saturday September 13 at the Stag Creek Church of Christ with Minister Wilburn C Hill and interment followed in Stag Creek Cemetery He was born November 15 1876 in Lee County Texas and moved with his family to Mills County as a child He married Willie Ethridge in Mills County in 1907 and survived by a large family including daughters Mrs Roy McDannel Mrs Hugh Moore Mrs Webb Heathington Mrs James Seale Mrs Charles Carpenter and sons Bobbie and Billie Price plus four brothers and four sisters from various Texas counties.
Lions Club Crop Show hosts a 2 30 p m boys rodeo open only to Comanche County contestants. Entry blanks signed by parents required by 5 00 p m Sept 22. Admission 50c adults 25c children. Prizes vary per event with cash rewards up to 10 dollars and a potential professional classification if prizes affect Inter scholastic League status.
About twenty youths from Sidney have left to attend colleges and universities across the state. Attendees include Euell Rogers and Loel Cox at Texas A&M, Jack Bryant at Abilene Christian, Junior Rice at John Tarleton, Coy Perkins at Howard Payne, Don Heathington at Baylor, and Garnet Milner at TCU.
The Bishop of Dallas C Avery Mason will lead a box supper at the John D Waring ranch in Comanche on Thursday September 25 at 7:30 PM. The event gathers Episcopal members from Brownwood Hamilton Meridian Stephenville Dublin Cisco Eastland Ranger Breckenridge and others to meet the bishop and hear brief talks. Mrs Gardner Thomas of Brownwood will speak. All interested are welcome.
Rev John G Lambrides announced his resignation last Sunday as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Comanche. A World War II veteran, he had led the local church for about two years after pastoring several large Northern churches. His future plans were not announced.
The Ward School Mother's Club launches a fundraising drive to buy a 16MM Visual Aid Projector to improve teaching. They urge local support, noting education funding depends on local taxes or donations and inviting interested residents to a meeting on the second Wednesday in October.
On September 28 the public is invited to the annual homecoming at White Point Church. Bring your basket of food and spend the day with old friends. An interesting program is being planned by the committee.
A large crowd and the 70 piece Comanche High Band head to Coleman for a fateful game as the Indians meet the defending regional champions Coleman High Bluecats. Coleman brings 14 of 25 lettermen back and a weight edge. Marshall's squad works on defense after last week's loss to Olden Hornets. Probable Indians starters include Hicks, Wilson, Mazurek, Phifer, Roberson, Green, Guthrie, Masters, G Hicks, Tupin, and Layman. Coleman beat Munday 13 6 to open the season.
Peanut producers must complete a questionnaire by October 1. The form, to be filled for each farm with peanuts picked and threshed since 1943, helps determine eligibility to vote in the 1948 peanut marketing quota referendum. Farmers not yet surveyed should visit the County Agricultural Conservation Program office at once.
Comanche horses led Coleman Horse Show led by J W Carters Palomino Sunny to grand championship in Palomino division. Six more Comanche horses sired by Earl Albins Royal King took four firsts and two seconds across divisions including Tom King Star Sox Honey Chile Royal Pet Major King Bunny Babe Copper Boy with owners Clarence Albin Shorty Gore M P Leonard L A Singleton Mullin.
H M Vineyard moves real estate and insurance office to the Tate Building recently vacated by Stark Waffle Shop. Kilpatrick's begins work on a 25 by 50 foot sheet iron warehouse at the rear of the store lot leased from Mrs R W Hamilton. E E Straley travels to Dallas on a buying trip for his electric company.
Rev Bill Glasgow will preach at the Elm Grove school house Sunday morning at 11 o'clock.
Comanche Lions Club sponsors the Comanche County Crop Show at the County Livestock Building on September 27. Entries for the Community Booth are now due by September 22, with judging starting September 27 at 10 a.m. First prize is 15 dollars.
The Comanche Indians defeated the Olden Hornets 19 to 6 in the opening game of the 1947 football season. Speedy Hicks scored all three tribes touchdowns, aided by strong passing from Masters and a key punt block by Philfer. The team now prepares for a Friday matchup with the Coleman Bluecats.
Mr and Mrs Reginald Waggoner of Comanche announce the birth of a daughter Sunday at Brownwood hospital The baby weighed 842 pounds and has been named Anita Lyn Mrs Waggoner is the former LaVoyce Nabors daughter of Mr and Mrs A Nabors 2310 Avenue I Brownwood
The Lions Club Carnival for the Fall Crop Show is shaping up with many concessions secured. Chair: Charles Marshall announces booths and attractions including a doll stand, ducking tub, wild animal show, bingo, ring-a-duck, butter dish, Coca-Cola booth, and multiple other stands.
Floyd Sorley, who has headed the De Leon Bearcats coaching staff for four seasons and led them to a district football title last season, resigned Tuesday afternoon to take a teaching job with Petersburg Public Schools. He will stay with the Bearcats through Friday night’s game versus the Winter Blizzards.
Earl Goss advertising manager for Higginbotham Bros. & Company resigned this week to accept a Fort Worth Press job. He will lead the Industrial page published every Monday in The Press.
Clarence Everett and Olepha Stacey leave Comanche and De Leon respectively for Den ton to enter North Texas State College. BE Pierson of Comanche, ex county ACA head now with a fertilizer firm, reports catching a five pound bass in Lake Brownwood Saturday.
