Deadline to peanut farmers looms in Comanche County

The PMA urges all peanut farmers to return the Peanut Marketing Questionnaire by October 1 to avoid penalties. If quotas pass in December, support will be 90 percent of parity at $3.01 per bushel. noncompliance could halve the 1948 price. About half of county farmers have already submitted their forms.

Soil Conservation District Election Set in Comanche County

The Texas State Soil Conservation Board announces a Saturday October 4 election in Comanche County to decide if areas outside a district should join the Upper Leon Soil Conservation District. County election chairman Charlie Marshall and John D. Waring oversee polling in Springs Beattie Sidney Comanche Hasse Newburg Gustine and Lamkin. If approved, all of Comanche County will join Upper Leon under the Board of Supervisors with two local members named from Comanche County.

Radio Artists Here Tuesday in Comanche

Georgia Slim and His Texas Round-Up star at Comanche High School auditorium Tuesday September 30 sponsored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. The show begins 7:30 pm with a 25 to 50 cent admission and proceeds support the Veterans Building Fund. Members include Big Howdy Forrester Dewey Groom Corn Patch Hendrix Joe Forrester and Lespedeza. Georgia Slim broadcasts daily over KRLD Dallas 6:45 to 6:15.

Higginbotham Store at Ballinger Damaged by Fire

Higginbotham Bros. & Co. mercantile building in Ballinger suffered heavy damage from a fire early Monday. The three story structure sustained about 150000 dollars in losses with the origin still undetermined and the blaze beginning on the third floor.

Boys Rodeo Saturday At Local Grounds

The Boys Rodeo caps Saturday events at 2:30 PM at the local grounds with entries in goat roping calf riding dismounted calf roping greased armadillo race and more. Officials include Wayne Evridge chair Walter Hill and Earl Albin with Lee Coffey coordinating animals. Ticket prices are 50 cents for adults 25 cents for children.

Low Bid Taken on Highway 34 for Memorial Highway 36

Harry Campbell of Fort Worth submitted the low bid to the Texas Highway Commission on Tuesday for 14.21 miles of grading structures flexible base and single surface treatment on Memorial State Highway 36 from Rising Star in Eastland County to the hard surface in Comanche. The bid totaled $348,509. Plans were prepared by the Brownwood district office of the Highway Department.

Fire destroys 2 family residence on East Fleming Avenue

Fire believed caused by defective attic wiring destroyed a two family home on East Fleming Avenue at dusk Saturday. The residence valued at about $4000 with $2000 insurance. household goods loss estimated $4000 to $5000 with no coverage. Mrs. Sherwood McDonald of Co manche sustained painful injuries in an automobile accident Monday while en route to Hobbs New Mexico. Mr McDonald was only slightly hurt as their car suffered heavy damage.

Reverend John G. Lambrides who recently resigned as pastor of the First Baptist Church here was scheduled to leave Thursday with Mrs. Lambrides for Ohio to visit relatives and friends. He is a former Army chaplain and pastor of large northern churches and has received several inquiries but has not accepted a new assignment.

Local Dairymen Compete at Waco Jersey Show

Seven Comanche County men attended the Texas Jersey Cattle Club Show in Waco last Saturday. Deep Jersey Farm of Austin took most Jersey honors by owning the 3-year-old grand champion bull Draconis Royal Baron, undefeated in his class and junior champion at Columbus last year. Kinnard Jersey Farm of De Leon entered four animals in the Jersey sale. Winning cattle will represent Texas at the National Jersey Show in Columbus, with Elton Brigham of Jones County earning an all expenses paid trip as a 4-H and FFA judging contest winner.

Frank Holmes Dies in Dallas After Heart Attack

Frank Holmes 58 a former Comanche resident who had lived in Dallas for some time died September 17 in a Dallas hospital after a heart attack Funeral services were held in Dallas last Friday Interment was in a Dallas cemetery under the LO O F Lodge He is survived by his widow Louise and a daughter Mrs Pat Baxter of Dallas Also surviving are siblings Mrs Dollie Johnson Mrs Lula Ramsey and Fred and M R Holmes of Lubbock among others from Comanche attending the services were Mrs Butler Mrs Westfall and several relatives from Comanche including Mr and Mrs Don Norris and Miss Lois Stephens

J. W. Carter's 1947 Palomino horse finished third in its class at the World's Palomino Horse Show in Fort Worth. The event drew hundreds of Palominos from nearly every state and several foreign countries.
