Comanche Public Schools begin with 943 students enrolled, up from 858 last year, a gain of 85. Enrollment is expected to rise to about 1100 for the year. New studies include Junior Business Training World History and Speaking in high school. Grammar School boys will follow an athletic program supervised by Cyril Irby. Principal B. G. Gims praised the progress at the Grammar School and overall outlook for the year. Senior class enrollment stands at 81 with promising prospects for next year’s graduation.

The Far ers Marketing Association met Monday night with a large turnout of farmers and business men. Members praised spraying talks, named a committee of merchants and farmers to invite Government Experiment men, and planned a big fruit and melon show next year. The Mothers Club of Comanche High School invites the public to a Friday night gala at the local ballpark featuring a mammoth cake walk with 500 homemade cakes, a large scale bingo game with generous prizes from local merchants, and a preview scrimmage of the 1940 Comanche Indians football team led by Coach Frazier against Sidney. The event supports band uniforms and community spirit with no admission charge for the scrimmage.

First Bale of 1940 Cotton Ginned at Comanche
The first bale of 1940 cotton was brought to Comanche on Friday August 30 by John Smart. The 487 pound bale was sold to H L Kight for 9 cents. The cotton was ginned at the Blue Gin. Smart has had three other bales ginned this week and has not yet picked over his crop. Burl Cunningham visited his brother Frank C Cunningham on Lindsey farm about three miles north of Comanche Fort Worth last week.

Chapman Certified As Democratic Nominee For Commissioner
Walter Chapman was certified as the Democratic nominee for Commissioner of Precinct No. 1 at a Saturday meeting of the Executive Committee. F L Little, Chapman's opponent, protested for a recount in Box No. 1 of Comanche. The committee ruled it lacked authority to open the ballot box, citing a 1932 court decision. Little was informed he has five days to appeal.

The Chamber of Commerce directors donated 50.60 dollars at a Tuesday meeting to the Band Mothers Club to help buy new uniforms for the Comanche Band. Mrs. A P Cox announced the Night of Games raised over 50 dollars at the gymnasium Friday, a social event well received. Wayne Evridge notes the Comanche Ropers Club hopes to stage a miniature rodeo to benefit the band if an out of town opponent is secured.

Next session set for August 1941 at Robinson Springs church. Association formed October 2 1875 from eight churches previously part of Bosque River.

Beattie Schoolgirl Killed In Auto Bus Crash
Billie Louise Buckmaster fifteen year old Beattie Schoolgirl died two miles south of Beattie on the Comanche road after a head on collision between a small school bus driven by Robert Jones and an automobile driven by Raymond Merworth. The fatality occurred near the S. L. Nelson place as the bus carried ten other Beattie students home from a funeral. Billie Louise was thrown against the wind shield and her jugular severed. she died within about ten minutes after collapsing. Funeral services were held at Taylor's Chapel with Rev. Roger Smith officiating.

The dove season will not open until September 15 in Comanche County as it lies in the Southern Zone. The Northern Zone already opened the previous Sunday. The bag limit has been reduced from 15 to 12 birds.
