Also noted: a rattlesnake bite near the San Saba River left Stella Hicks in peril but she was reported improving. a nearby oil well north of De Leon on the Desdemona road produced a gusher on Monday night on the Duke property.

L. J Sledge on the W. M Barton farm in Soda Springs reports fifteen acres yielding 661 bushels and five pounds of peanuts. Sold to Durham Pecan & Peanut Company for 76 cents per bushel grossing $502.36. Additional peanut hay sales at $8 per ton could bring about $90, totaling nearly $600 in gross receipts, averaging $40 per acre.

Gasoline Dealer Sets New Record in August 1938
W. C. House, local Sinclair agent, posted a new sales record by selling more gasoline in August 1938 than in any prior month. He has managed Sinclair distribution since the company’s organization and has been in the trade since June 21, 1923. The Sinclair Company has advertised consistently in The Comanche Chief all summer.

Beer Seized In Raid At Comanche Home
Local officers and State Liquor Inspector J D Pelphrey of Brownwood seized 40 cans of beer at Chuck Pitts home in Comanche Saturday morning. Charges were filed for possession of beer for purpose of sale. Pitts paid a 25 dollar fine and costs totaling 47 30 dollars Saturday afternoon.

John Smart Produces First 1938 Bale of Cotton
Comanche farmer John Smart, three and a half miles north of town, brought in the first 1938 bale of cotton Friday. About twelve acres were picked to yield roughly 1300 pounds, with 412 pounds in lint. A $25 premium was raised by local merchants and the Blue Gin gin house donated the bale.

County Tax Rate Set At 40 Cents In Comanche County
Comanche County approves a 40 cent tax rate for the fiscal year starting October 1, five cents below the current rate and among the state’s lowest. The proposed budget is on file at the County Clerk’s office and a public hearing will be held next Monday morning in the district courtroom.

Smith Well No. 1 A Producer Near Duster
A well named Smith No. 1, located one mile south of Duster and at 2790 feet, is reported as a commercial producer. Tubing was being pulled and acidizing prepared to proceed. Reported flow of 100 barrels on Tuesday was not confirmed by managers who expect results after acidizing. A second test near the Wolf heir estate by the Sells company is planned 1000 feet north of Smith No. 1.

Well Being Drilled On W C Stark Place
R W Richmond of Abilear began a shallow test well Thursday on the W C Stark place six and a half miles east of Comanche near Hasse. The target is shallow sand and limestone. This marks the first well drilled near Hasse since the oil discovery north of the county around Duster.

Florida Associates report McGuire No 1 test well nine miles north of Comanche has reached 850 feet. Two twelve hour towers are operating. Associates include Nelson G. Pearce F. W. Balch D. W. Swarts Geo. W. Beach all based in St Petersburg along with C. M. Doyle of Fort Worth and J. M. Hickey of Arlington staying at the Ridgeway Hotel.

Renews Chief For Her Sixtieth Year
Mrs. J. C. Ross of Sidney renewed her subscription to The Chief for its 60th year. Her father Langston subscribed in 1878, five years after the paper began, and Mrs. Ross has read it in their home since. She is mother of Frank Ross of Comanche.

Proctor School Opens Monday With Opening Address

City approves tax rate of 1.45 for upcoming year
Comanche City Council sets the tax rate at 1.45 per dollar for the year starting October 1. The rate remains near the constitutional limit with 85 cents going to bonds and sinking fund, about 55 cents for water bonds, 30 cents for the general fund, and 30 cents for the street fund. Total valuation around 1.593 million would yield about 21,838.50 if all taxes are collected.

Man Indicted On Chicken Theft Is Arrested Here
Co. R. Timmons, named in Brown County grand jury indictments for chicken theft, was arrested in Comanche Saturday night by Sheriff Wid Spivey. Sheriff Jack Hallmark returned him to Brownwood to jail. Twenty eight chickens allegedly stolen May 19 from S. B. Hereford of Bangs were recovered in Comanche the next day after a Carbon dealer bought them and reported the find.

Arthur Wins Prize for Biggest Fish in Texas Contest
J. H. Arthur of Comanche won the Peerless Drug Company big fish contest for the largest game fish in this Texas region during August. He caught a bass weighing six pounds seven and one half ounces at Lake Eanes and received a $40 Shakespeare President’s reel. Arthur notes the best bass fishing in the state is at Lake three miles south of Comanche.

J C Biggs, operator of a local filling station and garage, topped Group No 1 in a Magnolia sales contest winning an all expense paid tour of South Texas. He amassed 20 000 more points than the next competitor as Biggs Auto Parts showed a 130 percent sales rise in the six months to March 1. He will depart September 20 with Magnolia agent Tom Bureton and about seventy five Magnolia dealers for a tour from Beaumont to Houston and Galveston.
