Comanche plans a one percent local sales use tax vote at City Hall on Saturday November 1 with polls from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The measure would raise about 100000 to 125000 for the city. Voter turnout is expected around 25 percent of over 1000 qualified voters.
The Wm. Martin No. 1 well on the George Pratt farm north of Comanche was abandoned after little oil showed up. Water was discovered about 180 feet below the surface. In Proctor, a Local Option vote on offPremises sales passed 127 117 but was overturned by 15 wet and 3 dry votes deemed invalid and is on appeal. Liquor sales continue pending Eastland Circuit Court review.
Frances Lockwood reports that the First United Methodist Church youth will host Trick or Treat for UNICEF on Saturday November 1 with a 6 am meet at the church to receive materials. Participants carry orange boxes to collect coins for UNICEF worldwide relief for malnourished and poorly clothed children.
Winners in last week's Comanche Chief Football Contest are Brantley Smith of Comanche first with only three misses earning five dollars. John D Hicks of Comanche and Ellen Statham of Corpus Christi earned yearly subscriptions as runners up for missing four games. Honorable mentions go to six participants who missed five games including L C Grimes of Mississippi, Mrs Perry W Farley of Houston, Alice Stokes, Don Kirkland of Brownwood, Pam Ross and Mrs Ruby Hall of Comanche.
Coach James Wilson's seventh grade Peps host Brownwood in a pair of games on Thursday at Indian Memorial Stadium. First kickoff at 6 p.m. Don Hodges leads B-Team and Freshmen to Coleman for a 6 30 start in their contest.
Lone Star Gas asked Comanche authorities to raise residential and commercial natural gas rates to earn a fair return on property used in service. The request is the first major increase since 1953, citing income deficiency from inflation, higher costs, wages, interest, and taxes. If approved, the average monthly bill would rise about $1.52 for roughly 1650 customers.
Volunteers in the 1969 Greater Comanche United Fund canvass report strong county response, running 30 ahead of last year. Stalwart workers include Connie Bagley in Van Dyke with 45.64, Mildren Whitten at Gustine School with 533.00, and Kathleen Eads in Hasse with 18.50. The drive highlights support for Red Cross U.S.O Junior Livestock Show and Public Library benefiting rural residents and troops.
A new space themed exhibit at the Comanche library draws space oriented youth to the display. Patrons are invited to visit and browse the new books on the shelves during the exhibit period.
Bobby Simpson of Vernon, grandson of Comanche and De Leon residents, received a Gallantry Award from the Easter Seal Society of Texas for outstanding achievement after a June 28 1968 auto accident left him with a broken neck and partial quadriplegia. Once unable to move, he relearned daily tasks and graduated high school via correspondence. He now attends Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and continues therapy twice weekly.
The 1969 United Fund drive enters its second week in Comanche with excellent county reports and optimism to reach the $7075 goal. Ten agencies share each gift, and the campaign emphasizes 100 percent employee participation to ensure success. No residential drive is planned. donations should be made at workplaces.
Eastland, led by quarterback Craig Lund, aims to extend a seven game win streak as they host the injury‑hit Comanche Indians tonight at 7 30. Randy Rexroat scores six last week for Eastland while Ruben Gaeta stars for the Indians and Ronnie Shaw is out.

Delore and Dale Spivey announce the Grand Opening of Your Shop in the Baxter Building Comanche. The store specializes in pants and blouses and will host grand opening events with free coffee and donuts and balloons for children on Friday October 31.
Mrs Carolyn Sue Beasley of Brownwood has been hired as the cooperative music teacher for Gustine and Sidney. A 1967 Hardin Simmons graduate she replaces Mrs Leta Benton who resigned. Beasley holds a BS and has 12 years experience teaching at Furman Elementary Corpus Christi and Z Z Rogers Lamesa. She assumed the post October 27.
