The turkey season will open for the Thanksgiving market here next week, says George C. McKinzie manager of the local Farmers Produce Company dressing plant. Purchases begin about Nov 5 with strong expecta tions for higher dressed birds as buyers offer top prices. He notes the crop may be smaller but quality should be better due to the large feed crop. all pickers must carry a social security card and number, arrangements advised for card access.
Seventy bushels of Yellow Delicious and a red apple variety were received at the relief office this week for county clients. Distribution is on a per family basis of 10 to 48 pounds per family, with a seven person household receiving 48 pounds.
Comanche High School Indians overwhelmed Desdemona 53 to 0 in a conference game, extending their Class B win streak to five and boosting their total points this season to 104 while allowing none. Tom Cox scored three touchdowns, Eddie Jones two, with Carnes kicking five extra points as the line dominated on the ground and defense.
The First Baptist Church of Gustine will appoint Rev. R. M. McGinnis as full time pastor starting November 1. Growth has been steady, repairs completed, with more planned as the congregation looks to expanded work ahead.
Fire of unknown origin consumed the Lamkin area residence of W. C Stephens a mile and a half east of Lamkin Saturday night. Stephens and his children escaped in their night clothes. Loss estimated at 1000 dollars with no insurance.
Comanche High School prepares for a district race showdown as CHS hosts Hico High on the local field at 7 30 PM moving up from 8 PM. Hico claims wins over Desdemona and Cransfill Gap and fields a stronger lineup led by Jack Hollis Derward Polk Bill Hall and Jim Wille trained to halt Comanche’s backfield under coach Joe Grimland.
Gustine High School rolls undefeated after routing Star as they prepare for a decisive game with Williams at Williams this afternoon. Conference standings show Gustine and Williams in tight pursuit of the title with remaining Week games including Brookesmith at Star and Early at Indian Creek.
Miss Eldeana Lane daughter of Dr and Mrs J O Lane was named Miss Comanche at a PT A beauty and amateur contest in the high school auditorium. Marguerite Grigsby placed second and Elizabeth Tate won the amateur title. Other honors went to Fran is Evelyn Durham and Elma Ann Jeanes as Miss Shirley Temple with ties for second to Jan Franks and Joan Anne Carpenter. Tom Sawyer prize went to John D Boswell Jr Ross Ligon won second. Lane and Tate will advance to the state contest in San Antonio in November. The program featured the West Ward Rhythm Band and the High School Orchestra with Z Compton as master of ceremonies.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Kelley moved this week from Comanche to Nocona. He is an employee of the Community Public Service Company and was transferred from the local plant to the Nocona facility.
Comanche Chamber of Commerce livestock committee met to plan the 1938 show in March noting fifty or more calves pigs and lambs already on feed. Vocational class leaders from Comanche De Leon and Comyn reported calf counts while M. Z. Compton said F. F. A. boys seek ten to twelve good pigs. The group expects a bigger show in 1938 and a creditable 1939 with county youths trained to raise cattle sheep and hogs.
County Judge R S McCharen attended as honor guest at the Comanche Lions Club bi weekly luncheon at the Ridgeway Hotel. Fifteen members were present and the club approved a $100 appropriation to apply on band uniforms. Mayor Hoff announced a reduced water rate for schools to encourage watering flowers shrubs and grass on campus and the athletic field.
The Comanche High School gymnasium bid notice will likely be issued on November 19 announced by City Superintendent J D Bramlette. The brick building sits south of the high school facing east with a capacity near 800 and includes a band room athletic room dressing rooms showers and additional facilities.
Dr John Power 91 longtime Brownwood rector emeritus of St Johns Episcopal Church died at his home after a few hours illness He served 30 years as rector retiring in 1934 taught at Daniel Baker College wrote a column for the Brownwood Bulletin helped form Brownwoods first charity and ministerial alliances and led civic clubs He was Brownwoods first scoutmaster with three sons Turner Frank and Ted surviving He moved from England to the United States in 1884 and came to Brownwood in 1904
Mrs. J. H. Arthur of the Comanche County Welfare Association asks for used clothing for local needy families. Last year thousands of garments were distributed to keep children from exposure to cold. Following an eight day session the Comanche County Grand Jury returned thirty four felony indictments in its final report here Wednesday afternoon. One hundred ninety two witnesses were examined with twelve burglary related indictments, eleven for driving while intoxicated, and a murder without malice charge among others. Three misdemeanor indictments were also made.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce approved a resolution to seek a modern brick hotel of 20 to 25 rooms with a banquet dining space. A committee will study the proposal and attract private capital, aiming for highway frontage and ample parking. Interested landowners should contact secretary Hilton Burks.

A Gustine fire Thursday at about 11 30 in a three room house killed 80 year old W D Raney the occupant. The stove explosion spread burning oil on him as he prepared lunch and he died before reaching a physician. Survived by son Howard and two daughters and another son, Raney had lived in Gustine for about 25 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Ferguson of Burnet spent Sunday with their mother Mrs. M. A. Ferguson and grandmother Mrs. W. W. Harvey, detailing a family outing.
Comanche horses swept prizes at the Erath County Horse Show in Stephenville last week. Sutton Dudley won first prize with his Palmino yearling stallion and second with a Palmino mare in the three year old class. J B Allicorn’s Palmino stallion took a close second in the three year old stud division, while T J Williams’ Palmine horse finished second in the same age group.
Rev. Charles H. Cole of the Methodist Church and Rev. K. M. Shepard of the Presbyterian Church will swap pulpits for Sunday evening services according to their announcements.
