City Readies 1947 Taxes in Comanche District

City Secretary E L Curb announces the City of Comanche will begin collecting and issuing receipts for 1947 taxes next Wednesday October 27. He also says the Comanche Independent School District 1947 taxes will start then. Delay due to tax renditions and refiguring totals for most taxpayers.

Notice to Vehicle Owners and Dealers on Title Application

Comanche County Tax Assessor J E Lightfoot warns motor vehicle owners and dealers that from November 1 a new rule requires title applications within 10 days after assignment or incur a $5 penalty. Additional provisions of the law are available in the notice.

Parking On Private Property Draws Comanche Alert

Comanche City Council warns against parking on private property especially near service stations garages and theatres noting dangerous conditions and unlawful practice. Fines begin at 13.95 with costs on conviction while a $1.00 court esy notice may exempt violators from trial in this case. The rule aims to improve public safety despite objections from some property owners.

Four Local FFA Boys Win State Farmer Degrees

Four Comanche FFA members Spencer Spruill Billy Sam Henson Henry Lee and Harold McCullough were awarded State Farmer Degrees. Spruill, who showed a 960 pound Shorthorn steer at Dallas Fair earning 60 cents a pound, previously won reserve champion in 1945 at Pt Worth. The group earned gold charms, and Spruill's records show 1076.24 in labor income. The American Farmer Degree is the highest FFA honor.

Comanche County Farm Bureau will join the State-wide Round-Up Week October 23 30 to solicit memberships. President W Hezzie C Dean announced after a sub-district meeting in Brownwood. About 150 workers will canvass the county while J Walter Hammond Texas Farm Bureau Federation president opens the event with a Texas Quality Network address. Permit Required To Move Houses In Comanche

An ordinance requires a city permit costing 10 dollars before any house or building is moved through Comanche. A 24 hour notice to public utilities is required so companies can arrange service. Movers pay time and a half for after hours work and must be bonded or post a 100 dollar cash deposit with the City Secretary to cover damages.

Nancy Griffin 91 Dies at Hasse Home in Texas

Mrs. Nancy Humble Griffin died Monday evening at her son B A Griffin’s Hasse home after 17 years in Comanche County. Born October 16 1855 near Winnsboro Louisiana she was the widow of Oliver S Griffin and mother of 12 children. Funeral at Old Sardis Cemetery Tuesday. pallbearers named. She inspired many with humor and bravery during 10 years of blindness and sang numerous traditional ballads later recorded for the Library of Congress Archive.

Half Crop Peanuts Harvested In County With Solid Prices

County farmers report about half the peanut crop harvested with top nuts selling at 3.26 per bushel. Hay crop is good and peanut yields vary from nearly nothing to 40 bushels per acre. Tax collections speed ahead with 30,714.54 state and county funds in 18 days and 9.5 million rendered on the tax roll.

Comanche Entries Win Big at Dallas Quarter Horse Show

Comanche entries at the State Fair Dallas show excelled. Earl Albin’s Royal King won first in get-of-sire, with three Albin entries in the division including Bunny Babe and Tony King. J. W. Carter’s Sinney took second in Palomino, Honey Chile was fifth, and Tony Jo plus Royal Pet earned top placements in various classes. Bunny Babe was runner-up in its division.

Bank Deposits in Comanche Area Rise From Last Year

New totals show Comanche area bank deposits at $4,739,926, up from $4,114,481 a year ago. Gustine deposits reach $448,359 versus $413,104 previously. De Leon deposits stand at $2,347,769, down from $2,407,307 last year.

Charles W. Springstead died at his home near Comanche on September 25 after a two year illness. Rites were held at the Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. W. S. Clarke overseeing. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Clark Morris Harkins J. W. Hurt A. A. Lam and Gage Nelson. Out of town attendees included Mrs. Dorothy Wallace of San Angelo and Mr. and Mrs. Stone and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Fitzgerald of Stephenville. He was born in Johnson County Texas and lived in New Mexico and California before settling in Comanche County in 1930. He married Hazel Faulkner on December 21 1937. Surviving are his brother Luke Springstead of Comanche four sisters Mrs. Eva Dockery of Keene Mrs. May Smith Mrs. Vivian Fox of Bowie and Mrs. Lydia Howell of Horatio Arkansas. He was converted at 18 and lived a Christian life, helping others and sharing God’s love.
