The Grand Jury for the October Term was empaneled with panel members led by foreman D L Truett and secretary J D Tate. Judge Cross urged impartial, secret deliberations and uphold the Penal Code while noting H W Allen’s illness and new District Attorney Fro Tem, S R Allen, selected to assist. Visitors at the State Fair in Dallas included Mrs Golda Edwards and Misses Dudley Hicks and Lillian Durham.

Governor Stevenson backs rapid Legion recruiting drive

Governor Coke R. Stevenson meets with Andrew Dilworth and H W Underwood to plan immediate Navy or Naval Reserve recruitment in Texas. The American Legion aims to form two companies of 140 men each from the Houston and Dallas areas, with a unit to report by October 27 and Navy Day proclaimed for the same date.

Dairy Day Plans and Awards Set for November 6 at Comanche

Jersey group announces Dairy Day with blue red white and pink ribbons based on dairy cattle classification. Judges will award prizes for adult and junior attendants and entry forms are mailed to cattle owners in Comanche County. Dallas Man Starts Jersey Dairy Farm Near Comanche

Dallas businessman D Jenkins and family relocate from Dallas to the John Riordan place near Comanche. He plans a ranch style house in early 1942 and to raise registered Jersey cattle, some bought at the Dallas State Fair, with cattle raising as his main business.

Postal Receipts Show Gain in Comanche Quarter

Postmaster J. R. Eanes reports Septembers quarter receipts at Comanche Post Office rose to 4355 dollars from 4243 dollars a year earlier. The year shows increases each quarter with 1940 figures listed for March June September and December quarters and 1941 first nine months totals reflecting gains.

Man Killed in Gasoline Engine Explosion Near Gustine

Jim Yeates 46 of Hamilton died in Stephenville Hospital from burns after a gasoline engine on a WPA road project near Gustine exploded while he and R J Adcock 19 of Gustine poured gasoline into it. Adcock suffered burns but survived. Yeates died about five hours later.

REA To Sponsor Appliance School In Comanche County

The Women's REA Club of Comanche County will sponsor a two day Electrical Appliance School in Comanche on Tuesday and Wednesday November 4 and 5 Rural Electrification agents will lead demonstrations of farm and home appliances including stoves refrigerators washers water heaters pumps brooders and milk coolers The Comanche County REA project has sponsored several prior appliance schools and all have proved popular Mrs W S Price Jr of Gustine is president The club decided on the date at a Saturday meeting in Comanche

Plans Complete For Hallowe'en Carnival Here

Plans are complete for a big Hallowe'en Carnival by the Grammar School P T A on Thursday evening October 30 at the ball park or gymnasium if weather permits. About 6 000 votes have been cast for Carnival Queen with a 10 000 vote target. Proceeds fund library books for the Grammar School.

Five men from Comanche County will be called under the Selective Service Act on November 3. Led by W. Z. Compton the local board notes the men will depart for the induction station in Dallas at 9 am.
