Elm Grove Service Club met October 14 to quilt for Mrs. Jack Carter and Mrs. C W Taylor. The next meeting October 28 will quilt for Mrs. Hilton Burks and Mrs. Harvey Hart. Members start a scrap iron drive to fund Red Cross support and are urged to bring scrap to the club for collection by Thanksgiving.

John H. McEntire 71, longtime Comanche County resident, died October 18. Funeral service October 19 at Board Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Sterling Isham and Dr. Daughty. Survived by wife Susanna Stokes, five children, eight grandsons, two granddaughters, brother Bob McEntire, and sister-in-law Mrs. John Goforth. A Missionary Baptist Church member, he was married in 1897 and had led a Christian life.

Elza Brinson and Alvis Rodgers of Sipe Springs School have volunteered for the Army Air Corps. They reported to Abilene for training and receive leave of absence. Mrs Brinson will fill the elementary post, and Mrs Jessie Holbrook Ellis of Eastland will serve as high school principal in Rodgers absence. She is Grover D Holbrook’s sister.

Officers' Training Johnsie Pate A Coast Artillery Candidate
Johnsie Pate son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Pate of Comanche is in Officers' Training School in South Carolina and in the Coast Artillery. A 1940 Comanche High School graduate he starred as halfback for the Indians from 1936 through 1939 and captained his team in his final year. He has served about six months and was stationed with the Coast Artillery at Camp Wallace Texas. For wedding stationery call The Chief.

Eastland High School Mavericks defeated the Comanche Indians 7 to 0 in a muddy rain-soaked Friday night game at the local ball park. Eastland scored in the third quarter after a 21-yard pass from an Eastland back to a fading left-flat end, then plunged in for the extra point. Indian threats in the second quarter stalled at the Maverick one, with Eastland recovering on its one-yard line after Boff fumbled.
