Comanche students prepare for Halloween events as the carnival tops social activities. The week features a fundraiser, a queen coronation, and a steak dinner at Gore's restaurant. Local sales include a Speed Washer at Higgin’s Hardware and cigarette prices at Jeanes store, with storewide promotions noted.
Carol Lee Steele of Sidney and Tommy Couch of Gustine were named 1960 Gold Star winners for Comanche County by County Agents Ruth Stringer and Angus Dickson Jr. They will receive medals at the 4-H Presidents program on a date to be announced.
U S Senator Byrd headlines a Sidney rally as the Eagles prepare for a homecoming game against the Priddy Pirates on Thursday night October 27. In six man football action, Sidney meets Mullin, Gustine faces Pottsville, and Star plays Priddy on October 20.
Senator Robert C Byrd of West Virginia will headline a 30 minute address in Comanche next Wednesday Oct 26. Event at the Comanche County Courthouse starts 630 pm with music and cookies and may move to the district courtroom if weather turns. The committee includes County Attorney James F Fanning State Representative Ben D Sudderth and Albert Brannan with Mayor John H Hail and County Judge Dwight M Brightman coordinating. Delegations from surrounding areas are expected and the public is invited to hear the senator in support of the Kennedy Lyndon Johnson ticket.
Indians host Hamilton in the 8-AA opener at Indian Memorial Stadium with injuries hurting Bianco's squad. Key players hindered include Jerry Todd Donnie Hord Tommy Steele and Roger Johnson while Jackson Bowers returns to bolster guard and tackle roles as three B teamers are promoted to strengthen defense and depth for Friday's game.
Regular halfback Jerry Todd and guard Donnie Hord from Comanche are sidelined by injuries. Todd will miss the Hamilton game while Hord, hurt in practice, is out of action.
Gustine 4 H girls met at Gustine City Hall on Saturday October 1 to plan the year ahead in food preparation. Attending were Ray Center Kay Center Adcock Elaine Chancellor Evelyn Jackson and Sue Eddieman with Billy Adcock and Ronnie Chancellor as leaders. Officers elected include Ray Center president Diane Adcock secretary Ray Center treasurer and Sue Eddieman reporter. Memorial note mentions presidents Lincoln Garfield and McKinley with a family reflection this week.
A Comanche County wide Young Farmer Chapter has formed and will hold a special meeting Tuesday night October 25 at the Comanche High School Building. They plan to elect a president and vice president and feature speakers on farming and ranching topics for interested residents. Damon Power secretary notes about 70 area farmers and ranchers are invited.

Comanche High plans a Saturday carnival and Queen’s race to raise funds for yearlong class activities. Last year many groups including Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshman classes, FA groups, Warrior newspaper, Future Teacher Assn, Library Club, Student Council, Band and others received aid from the Carnival Fund.
A note outlines a substitute for Carnival and Queen’s race funding. On Saturday October 12 classes may conduct up to three activities: a meal, a downtown rummage sale or auction, and a night event. Senior plans include a buffet, a girls’ football game, and a rummage sale at Jean Mims’ home.
Community notices announce a country style dinner at Ginger Parsons home with party nuts for sale and a barbecue chicken dinner advertised by Me's Cafeteria. Freshmen barbecue event continues on back page.
Absentee balloting for the November 8 General Election began Wednesday October 19 and runs to November 3. County Clerk Sted Hall advises voters may apply in person at the County Clerk's office or by mail. Demand for absentee ballots rises with interest in the presidential race.
