Fain Waldrop president of the Comanche Veterans of Foreign Wars post is named county chairman of the USO drive with a $960 quota for Comanche County. The campaign, possibly the last for this organization, aims to gather the full amount by November 1 with Lions Club support and involvement from other county groups. Merle Scott of Temple outlines Scott's extensive USO and YMCA background, including leadership in Alaska and Hawaii USO activities, now serving as Temple USO Club director.

Bank Deposits in Comanche and Nearby Banks Rise

Bank deposits in the two Comanche banks on September 30 totaled 4,114,481.30, up from 4,398,709.97 on June 30. De Leon F and M National Bank held 2,407,307.94, up from 2,621,338.25. First State Bank Gustine reported 413,104.98, down from 435,562.79. Loans and discounts totaled 1,223,729.22 across the Comanche banks, up from 815,886.02. De Leon loans stood at 739,999.80, Gustine 208,236.86, up from 190,401.89.

Absentee Voting Begins for Two Elections in One County

Absentee voting at the county clerk's office started Wednesday for the November 5 general election and Friday for the November 7 special state constitutional amendment election. Voters will cast ballots for both events during the overlap period. The general election includes three amendments and candidates from U S Senate to local offices. The special election concerns a Veterans Land Fund amendment. Election officials address procedural questions on ballot handling between the two dates.

Additional Prizes For Quarter Horse Show Here Nov 9

Comanche County to stage its First Annual Horse Show on Saturday November 9 at the Comanche Rodeo Grounds. About 100 horses expected from across the state. Bronze miniature quarter horses will replace the planned gold prizes for grand champion stallion and mare. Ribbons awarded to top five in each class. Local merchants and banks donate the bronze prizes. Local breeder Earl Albin lauds merchant support and notes prizes available this weekend.

Hicks Convicted Of Court Contempt Files Appeal Notice

Elmer Hicks of Comanche was found guilty in district court this week of contempt of court, fined 100 dollars and sentenced to three days in jail. His attorney Gib Callaway filed immediate notice of appeal to the Court of Civil Appeals in Eastland. Assistant Attorney General Anderson and County Attorney Robert Long led the prosecution before District Judge R. B. Cross. A temporary injunction had restrained Hicks from possessing liquor for sale. A later county court case will address liquor possession for sale.

Community school consolidation plan discussed in Comanche

Helm described a plan allowing each community to keep its schoolhouse by deed to a local club. City Superintendent Chaffin noted about one third of Comanche’s students come from rural districts and that this share grows yearly. He said rural students are among the top in class and the larger school body enables richer study and more improvements.
