County Wide Free Public Library Organized For Comanche County

A county wide Free Public Library has been organized in Comanche County funded by smaller school libraries. The project aims to pool resources to provide a larger, fuller library with fiction, reference and picture books. Miss Rudine Taber is appointed librarian and the library is housed on the second floor of the courthouse.

Health Campaign to Begin in Comanche Area

Mayor W C House and County Health Officer C W Gray announce a cleanup and health drive for Comanche and surrounding areas starting soon. Two State Health Department officers will assist this weekend or early next week. Details will appear in next week's Chief.

Ist Annual Quarter Horse Show Set for November 9

The Comanche Roping Club announces the first annual Quarter Horse Show at the Comanche Grounds on November 9 with 60 to 100 entries. Entry is 2.50 per horse, prizes include a 14k gold plated miniature quarter horse for grand champion stallion and similar prize for grand champion mare.

Lions Host Faculty For Lions Club Night

About 150 Lions and guests including faculty members and spouses attended a Lions Club ladies night at the Comanche High School Tuesday. Lion President Pat Cagle presided. Superintendent Virgil Chaffin expressed thanks and introduced 36 faculty members. The event featured jokes impersonations by Lions and a skit led by Charles Marshall with humor from group members. Dr. Curtis of Brownwood preached on Lion fellowship as the principal speech.

Civil Docket In District Court Here Next Week

The fall term of District Court opens with Judge R. B. Cross leading a grand jury inquiry. He notes crime rose since the war but is not as high as a decade ago as civil cases are dismissed for want of prosecution. Cross will return Monday to resume the civil docket. Grand jurors and bailiffs are listed.

Louise Clayton Injured in Crash Near Jacksboro

Mary Louise Clayton 18 of Comanche, a John Tarleton College student, was injured in a highway crash near Jacksboro when her car collided with a cattle truck. Frank Baucum 18 was killed. other Tarleton students Charles Gray Vera Norman and Clarence White were injured.

De Leon Youth dies in highway crash near Gorman

Troy West a De Leon area youth and recent armed forces discharge died in a hospital in Gorman from injuries in an auto wreck on the De Leon to Gorman highway. His car reportedly struck bridge railing. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jim West of De Leon. Funeral services were held Tuesday in De Leon.

Plans for 1947 Junior Livestock Show in Comanche County

Comanche County Livestock Association officers set the 12th Annual Junior Livestock Show date for the day before Brownwood. A steel building 40 by 120 feet is funded for housing the show, with completion tied to steel availability. Thieves are active. a $100 reward stands for information leading to arrests.

Comanche Indians Open District Play vs. Hico Tigers

Comanche High School hosts Hico in the first district gridiron game of the season at 7 30 p m Friday. Coach Dyer states the squad aims to win despite mud and recent injuries to Rippe toe and Fritts. Hico scored 46 0 in its lone conference start, while Comanche seeks turnaround after a 13 0 loss to Hamilton and a 32 0 defeat to Coleman. Lions plan a group attendance with J C Wilkerson as cheerleader and E P Jeanes leading tumbling acts.

Spruill Shorthorn Wins First Prize At State Fair

Spencer Spruill, a senior at Comanche High School FFA, won first in the Shorthorn division at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. His 770 pound calf sold at auction for 1 per pound and earned $31 in prize money. The calf was bred by Tom Denman of Stephenville. He will show another Shorthorn at the Comanche County Junior Livestock Show next year.

J B Stanton Dies in Temple Civic Leader and Lumberman

J B Stanton prominent Temple lumberman and civic leader died Sunday October 6 after a brief illness. Born in Comanche he moved to Temple in 1919 to manage Wm Cameron and Company then started City Lumber Company. He was active in the First Methodist Church American Legion Masons Shriners and Chamber of Commerce with survivors including his wife three daughters and several siblings.

Polio Strikes Comanche Woman In Fort Worth Hospital

Mrs. Elsie Steele II, 18, wife of Gerald Steele of Comanche, is ill with poliomyelitis at City-County Hospital in Fort Worth. She is mother of an eight month old, admitted last Wednesday, with a severe case. This is Comanche’s second polio case this year. Fort Worth area polio cases reach 147 this year.
