Light Term District Court Opens In Cox Building

The district court convenes here Monday in the Cox Building over Coleman's Grocery for a light term. The grand jury, led by R. B. Cross, meets at nine oclock. The county courthouse has rented the upper story for jury work and non contested cases. the schedule for contested cases will be announced later. County 4H Club Boys Attend State Encampment

County 4H boys will attend the State Encampment in Dallas October 16 17 18 with free grounds access and official actment by the State Fair Association. Dalton of Comanche and Raymond of Dusters win trips for open competition based on project records. County 4H members total 94 with livestock and crop demonstrations including melons peanuts corn tomatoes hogs sheep turkeys and more.

Lomanche Postal Receipts Show Gain

Post Office receipts for the first three quarters of 1939 totaled 11204.74, according to Postmaster J. R. Eanes. Receipts for the same period in 1928 were 10914.51, indicating an approximate three percent gain for the year.

Beech Nut trip winner from Texas in 1919

W Holcomb of Comanche won a Beech Nut plant trip to Camn arine New York for selling Beech Nut in Texas. Mrs J C Evridge was killed in a storm Tuesday night in Comanche. Omanche beat Santa Anna 33 0 with Reese and Denny star backs. Contractors Smith and Helms begin road work from Comanche to Blanket with many mules and 15 teams. Band Hall Work Expected Soon at Comanche High School

The Comanche High School band hall project received NYA approval and will begin shortly as a stone building on campus west of the gym. It will cost about 10,000 dollars for materials and labor with 40 to 45 young men aged 18 to 24 employed at roughly 18 cents per hour under E Terrell Coleman, NYA Area Supervisor of Stephenville.

A and P Food Store Opens Advertising Campaign Here

A and P Food Store opens an advertising campaign in Co manche with ads on page three announcing special prices. Manager R L Smallwood, transferred from Dallas over a year ago, says the store will receive fresh citrus weekly by truck from the Valley along with other items featured in the opening ad.

Service Drug Store marks its seventh anniversary this week in Comanche with a full page ad in The Chief. Clarence Huett co-owns the firm with H. M. Former board church woman unites with husband after 17 years

Mrs Charlies Murry daughter of the late Frank Watson of the Board Church community recounts a remarkable reunion with her World War I veteran husband Phillip Charles Murry whom she believed dead for 17 years. He had vanished New Year’s night 1922 leaving their Lamar Colorado home for Animas and never returned until last week when he found his wife and a young son and daughter in Brownwood. The family now lives at 2802 Austine avenue. He was listed as a missing veteran with his grave decor at Pueblo, Colorado memorials marking the years since his disappearance.

Laraway Lalue Winners At State Fair of Texas

Golden Oak Magnet owned by C. M. Caraway and Sons of Comyn won grand champion and junior championship in the Shorthorn bull class at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Collynie Stamp, also Caraway owned, took the Senior championship in the same division. Grand Championship female Shorthorn went to Golden Oak Missie 2d, owned by Caraway and Sons, which also claimed the Senior champion female title. The Caraway herd earned more than fifty additional prizes.

Clarence Huett Wins Free Trip To World's Fair

Clarence Huett owner of the Service Drug Store was awarded an all expense paid trip to the New York World's Fair for leading his district in Maytag washing machine sales during the contest period. The announcement came from Maytag headquarters in Dayton Ohio. J D Jackson Maytag salesman for the Service Drug Store earned a fishing trip to Port Aransas for strong summer sales. The store took over the Maytag agency January 1 and reported solid sales through October 1.

Carnes Food Market Celebrates Second Anniversary in Comanche

Carnes Food Market marks its second anniversary in Comanche this week with a food sale. The store opened on October 15, 1937 under manager C. W. Pat Carnes, with brother Carl Pete Carnes. Otis Coker among first clerks. The staff now includes Melvin Guthrie John Hammons in charge of meat, with Lloyd Coker Ben Gunn and Hicks Bryson assisting. The Carnes policy promises low prices and full refunds or exchanges if dissatisfied. A second Carnes store opened in De Leon a year ago under manager Ralph Buster Carnes. The Carnes family has long been active in Comanche County commerce dating back to Old Corn in the 1850s.

Louisiana Man Buys Sartwell Property In Comanche

E. S. London of Louisiana bought the Sartwell property in Comanche near the Post Office. The deal includes the Davis Blacksmith Shop and Kendrick Marble Yard with a residence beside the Presbyterian Church. London plans a blacksmith and welding shop after renovations, with his son J. H. London. Wade Kendrick moves his marble shop to the nearby Methodist Church property. Davis seeks a new location.

Luker Receives U S Appointment to Agriculture Dept

C T Luker was appointed to the U S Department of Agriculture in animal husbandry, division of meat and food inspection, assigned to Kansas City. He is son of Mr and Mrs Clement Luker of Proctor and grandson of Mr and Mrs C F Luker, married to Miss Bobbie Islam of Comanche. He is a Comanche High School and Texas A M College graduate and has practiced veterinary medicine at Coleman since last June.

State Official To Visit Co. Schools

Deputy State Superintendent G. D. Holbrook will visit Comanche County schools on October 18 19 and 20. Notices of schedule have been mailed to superintendents and principals. All trustees urged to meet during the visit. Only State Aid schools to be visited at this time.

Comanche Lions Entertained at Stephenville District Meeting

Comanche Lions and guests from Brownwood Hamilton and Glen Rose attended a district zone meeting in Stephenville hosted by the Stephenville Lions at the Long Hotel. A banquet featured turkey and trimmings followed by a short program with District Governor W. H. LaRoque of Cisco and club activity reports. The group watched Kilgore Junior College beat Stephenville 20 to 12 in a thriller.

Mayor Considers School Safety Zones in Comanche

Mayor M. Coleman said the Comanche City Council is weighing school safety zones. The council discussed banning parking along the high school front on a narrow street, but action was not taken due to problems. Civics students from Virgil Chaffin High School attended the meeting.

Magnetic Picker Reclaims Nails From Comanche County Roads

The State Highway Department’s magnetic nail picker mounted on a truck covered Comanche County highways and collected 901 pounds of nails bolts and other scrap metal capable of puncturing tires plus about 100 pounds of tin cans were removed from the roads.
