Comanche Hospital to Close After October 14

Comanche Hospital, Inc. will cease accepting new patients after Friday October 14. Drs. W A Flannery and W D Blackwood will continue their clinic at 200 E Grand, with full services, hours 8-12 and 1-5 weekdays and 8-12 Saturdays, while the hospital transitions to closure and the clinic remains open for patients.

Bantis Association Sets Annual Meeting in De Leon

The Comanche Baptist Association chaired by John C. Wiles will hold its annual meeting October 13 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at De Leon’s First Baptist Church. Rev. Dewey Lamb will deliver the annual sermon with Elmin Howell giving the closing message.

Comanche National Bank Joins Full Service Banks

Comanche National Bank becomes member of the Foundation for Full Service Banks. President J. W. Moore says the foundation runs a nationwide public education program using national advertising to promote full service banking. He notes the foundation has 6200 banks representing 75 percent of US deposits and that full service means handling a customer's every banking need under one roof.

Alice Stokes Wins Weekly Football Contest

Alice Stokes of Brownwood and Mary Ruth Ross lead a weekly football contest in the Comanche Chief with two ties among fifteen games. Stokes wins first prize of 5.00 for closest tie breaking score in Comanche San Saba. A tie for third places Richard Hicks and C L Northcutt receive a year’s subscription. More entries every week.

Eighteen Indictments Returned by Local Grand Jury

The 52nd District Court grand jury issued eighteen indictments Tuesday afternoon. Seventeen are felonies. one is a second degree homicide alleging a misdemeanor. Names are withheld as defendants have not been arrested. Indictments include two for forgery and passing, two for assault with intent to murder, nine burglary counts, one forgery of a money order by alteration, one failure to stop and render aid, and one auto theft. One person faces three burglary indictments and another faces three burglary counts.

Remodeling of Zion Lutheran Church Nears Completion

Zion Lutheran Church of Priddy completes a summer remodeling for its 80th anniversary on October 26. Final touches include new lighting, red carpet and pew cushions, a solid oak altar, baptismal front, seven foot oak cross, brass ware, red altar curtain, and upgraded carpentry by local crews from Goldthwaite Comanche and Waco. The public is invited to view progress and attend the 10:30 anniversary service.

Rebekah Lodge Installs Officers at Comanche No. 206

Rebekah Lodge Number 206 in Comanche installed officers on Monday evening October 6. Installing officers were Susan Trowbridge Anna Mae Blackwood and Stella Wilson from Brownwood Golden Key Lodge 26 with Beth Davis and Nelda Frett assisting. New noble grand Ruth Daniel presided as Ruby Daniel reported the event noting a meeting and a refreshments table with red white and gold decorations.

Oil Activity Returns To Comanche County

Oil activity resumes in Comanche as William Martin begins drilling a Wildcat well on the George Pratt place four miles from Comanche on the De Leon highway. Weatherford Drilling Co. of Abilene handles drilling with an expected depth of 3290 feet and about ten days to completion.

Grand Jury completes October 1969 term for Comanche County

The Grand Jury of the 52nd Judicial District reports completing two days of investigation and questioning resulting in eighteen true bills of indictment. They note vandalism concerns, commend officers for keeping crime low, and suggest improvements to lighting and cooling in the District Court room. They thank Judge Roberts, District Attorney Byron McCellan, and County Attorney Jim Dudley, and request dismissal subject to recall.

Rainfall Helps County Farmers Amid Heavy Weekend Showers

Comanche County soaked by a weekend rain totaling up to 4 inches in places with 2.85 inches in Comarche and over 2.5 inches countywide. The southern part saw the heaviest rain, aiding peanut, small grain, and ranching interests while runoff was minimal and stock tanks remained low. Year to date rainfall stands at 25.38 inches versus 31.13 inches last year.
