Fifteen hundred fifty five bales of cotton were received at the Comanche Cotton Yard through Thursday morning, well above last year and on pace for about two thousand bales weighed. About six hundred bales were on hand, with three hundred expected to be shipped today as hot weather accelerates opening and picking.
On the first day of Fire Prevention Week a South Comanche residence owned by W. D. Renfro was destroyed at 9 30 p m. The seven room frame house and most furniture burned with only a few pieces saved. The Renfros were away at a cinema when the alarm came from Joe A Lee. The garage was partly damaged and neighbors salvaged clothing from the soaking tubs. Insurance partially covered the loss.
Beattie’s Ray McGinnis Trinity’s Jack Halbrooks Imola’s Dwight McBride Cross Roads’ Graham Bowman and Hasse’s Claude Sparks won four club trips to the Dallas State Fair County Agent John A Barton announced. The group heads out Monday for a three day encampment. McGinnis McBride and Halbrooks showed corn Bowman exhibited chickens and Sparks won on pigs.
Assistant professor Roy McPherson of C I A Denton has published a typewriting textbook titled Modern Typewriting. Published by Prentice Hall Inc New York the manual aids typing students and is now off the press per a letter to his sister Mrs George Goosby.
Mrs Coman Shear and her daughter from Waco are visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Williams.
Tom E. Wallen, once indicted in 1929 for swindling in Comanche County, was delivered by Tennessee authorities to Sheriff Dwight Brightman in Memphis last week. He was brought to Comanche and his bond set at $1,000, though he had not posted by Thursday morning.
John Alsup, a former Fort Worth police officer, was released on a 7500 dollar appeal bond after a Wichita Falls jury convicted him of murder in the attempted bank holdup at the First State Bank of Polytechnic on April 10 last year. He received a ten year sentence and left jail for the first time since April 16, 1930.
Only five cars of peanuts had been shipped from Comanche by Thursday noon, versus about twice that amount on the same date last year. C P L St Mair notes peanuts mature later and expects receipts near 25 cars this year, compared with 45 cars last year. Some areas report better yields in Beattie, Duster and Gustine.
In Big Time at State Fair Comanche’s Tobe Greer nears a regular guard role for the undefeated Matadors. Coach Pete Cawthorne’s Texas Tech squad heads to Dallas for the first inter sectional game booked by Tech authorities. The Matadors boast shutout wins over West Texas State Teachers and New Mexico Aggies.
Delcon Band and Comanche Band join the program on the Court House Lawn Sunday afternoon October 11 following director Pat Howard. The event features assistant musicians from the Delcon Band under Howard’s direction.
Fred Benson was arrested Monday at Milborn in Brown County by Sheriff Dwight Brighm and brought to Comanche and placed in jail on an alleged swindling charge. Bond was set at $1,000, which had not been posted.
Comanche railroads Frisco and Cotton Belt start free pickup and delivery within city limits on Thursday with Frank Carver and Wayne Dimgus handling deliveries. American Express extended free service to all city points and Texas lines received statewide approval from the Railroad Commission effective Thursday. Interstate approval followed earlier.
Oscar Callaway asserts President Hoover favors loosening Federal Reserve credit restrictions to boost liquidity and bank lending. He cites a Comanche County mass meeting resolution that claims current credits and money issuance hamper business, urging Congress and the Federal Reserve to empower local banks.
A light docket is expected when District Court meets in Comanche on Monday October 19 for the fall term. Twenty two civil cases on file vs 58 last term. thirty five men bound over for grand jury action. Divorces drop but lead civil cases with eight. seven suits on notes follow. In crim docket theft and swindling lead. McCarty murder case moved from Hamilton County.
A crowded district court room hosted the second mass meeting on rural school issues in Comanche. Speakers Callaway and Mrs. A Ha worth urged action, with O. H. Moore reading resolutions condemning the county school board and superintendent, criticizing state law on school grouping, and urging lower county superintendent expenses. Minnie Cunningham spent the weekend in Fort Worth with Mrs. I. M. Cochran.
Denver, Prisco, Cotton Belt and the Rock Island plus Texas and Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Southern Pacific and Missouri Kansas Texas control transportation companies and have been offering free pickup and delivery service for many months.
Tax collection for 1931 opened October 1 with City Tax Collector Hill Huddleston reporting 625 dollars for city and school. County official Mrs. B. W. Speed noted over 800 dollars paid by about a dozen people. Proctor resident W. H. Hanson named Comanche County citizen No 1 for 1922 poll tax. Roger Hasley first to pay city poll tax.
