On Wednesday October 12th designated as clean up day for all blocks touching the public square. Property owners urged to cut weeds pile trash and rubbish. City will clean alleys and remove all rubbish from the lots with full cooperation requested by Mayor J. R. Eanes.
C A Wells deputy county tax collector has been appointed railway mail clerk and will move with his family to Texarkana October 15 to work there. Romeo Walker, former assistant county superintendent, will take Wells’s vacated position in the Tax Collectors office.
Lyric Theatre owned by C. V. Caver will open Friday October 14. Installation of seats and machinery is underway and when finished the house will present modern features with western plays on Saturday matinees and evenings.
Loren Vaughn began erecting a five room residence on a lot adjoining his father's home south of the Hirth School campus. The contractor is Chuck Whitlock.
Congressman Thomas L Blanton informs that the Energy Post Office may close unless a qualified postmaster applicant is found. The office pays about 163 dollars annually and patrons are urged to be notified of the situation.
Comanche County Agricultural exhibit at the West Texas State Fair scored 874 points to win fifth prize of 50 dollars. Callahan 914 for first 200, Haskell 912 for second 150, Runnels 911 for third 100, Collin 899 for fourth 75, Coleman 845 for sixth 25. C M Caraway led the Comanche booth praised as one of the fair’s most attractive.
J. T. Moody, Commissioner of Precinct No. 2, advances a road program aiming to upgrade all precinct roads by term end. In three months three roads were improved or rebuilt, and work continues on the Fleming and Gustine road. Indian Gap Road extends eight miles from Goosby Bridge toward T. H. Luckie's farm with a 30 foot right of way, costing 140 dollars per mile to connect Comanche area improved routes.
Tra Gerganess has been appointed as office assistant by County Superintendent Gantz. Gerganess is well known in the County, having been raised here.
Evangelist Dr. Will Hogg invites Miss Marian Lucille Donaho to perform a solo at a revival he will lead with Rev. S. J. T. Williams in Abilene starting Friday October 14.
Local unidentified ad promotes rubber stamps with emphasis on low prices and prompt service. The notice, appearing in The Comanche Chief, highlights variety and affordability for buyers seeking stamping supplies.
The administration states subscriptions will be discontinued when they expire. Some patrons in arrears last spring will see final notices next week. Readers are urged to renew before names are dropped from the list.
Comanche defeated Rising Star High School with a windy game at Rising Star field. The Indians secured the only break of the half as Rising Star drove toward the goal but failed near the line. Rising Star threatened late but could not convert and Comanche held on for the win.
T. R. Holmsley and L. G. Mackey take over the Ford Contract in Colorado Texas and will jointly run the business. Holmsley departs for Colorado this Sunday with Lloyd joining later this week. Helmsley is known in Comanche and left the First State Bank about a year ago. Mackey has worked with his father on the Ford contract in Comanche, and Helmsley will move to Colorado immediately.
Primitive Baptist Church members will hold services at the Methodist Tabernacle in Comanche at 2:00 p m Sunday October 9. J W McCollum reports Rev Martin Stone of Brown County will preach.
Mr and Mrs John M Cameron longtime Comanche County residents of Mount Pleasant observe their Golden Wedding anniversary with family meals and simple celebration. Born in Mississippi and Texas respectively they married in 1877 in Shiloh community with Rev William Burks officiating. Their fifty years in county life include farming church work and hosting neighbors while rearing ten children and staying active in local schools.
Comanche High Schoolers face Gorman High this afternoon at 3 45 for the second conference game of the season. The teams last met in 1924 with a scoreless draw. Gorman, after a 62 0 opening loss to Cisco Big Dam Lobos, beat Eastland 19 points, then toppled Ranger Reserves 13 6.
The Hoffer Oil Corporation reports a good showing at 2850 feet on Rasco north of Sipe Springs with drilling at 3050 feet and planned to continue until Ellenburger Lime. Industry observers expect further oil sands nearby and new production using modern methods after boom days. Corby Well Drilling resumes at about 100 feet after a fuel system change.
Miss Dessa Moffett will teach at Salem in Eastland County during the coming school term. She studied two years at the Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth and two years at John Tarleton College. Reared in Comanche she graduated from Comanche Public School.
Miss Iva Hart says her ad in the Chief attracts wide reader interest and buyers. She notes a heater she advertised drew thirteen inquiries, and she may run a sold out notice for future sales.
Local shoppers still finding bargains as Tate Dry Goods Store clears remaining stock before closing. Doorbuster deals draw crowds seeking big discounts on apparel and housewares as final sale approaches.
Amerado Petroleum Company teams move two rigs onto the Mrs. J. H. B Ranch near Bryson Schoolhouse and Logans Gap area. Rigs spuds planned west of Bryson Schoolhouse and east of Logans Gap with hole depths of six hundred to a thousand feet, each test to last ten days to three weeks.
Comanche county bankers gathered at the courthouse Wednesday afternoon for a meeting of the Comanche County Bankers Association followed by a banquet at the Ridgeway hotel. Attendees included executives from F and M Banks of De Leon and Comanche, First State Bank of Comanche, First National Bank of Comanche, Proctor, and Gor man, with guests County Judge R. A. Luker and bankers O P Newberry and Ren F Reed.
At two o'clock Thursday 1946 bales of cotton had been received in the Commerce Cotton yard with 1375 ginned at the three Commerce gins. Charley Denny public weigher says peanuts are moving with Thursday as the first big receipts day, nearly a car load arriving.
More than a hundred farmers, a lady, and three busloads of school boys attended the two day Terracing school at Dan Clayton's farm in Comanche County. Today’s practical field work continues and a district court room session was planned for 2:50 tomorrow but moved after A K Short’s call to Houston. Officials from Extension and various farm groups participated alongside local vocational agriculture teachers.
