Miss Frances Durham Elected Treasurer of Phi Beta Mu

Miss Frances Evelyn Durham of Comanche a Baylor University sophomore has been elected treasurer of Phi Beta Mu girls music club. She also belongs to the Console club and Pianofiles music groups and is a 1940 Comanche High School graduate, daughter of Mr and Mrs W M Durham.

Trades Day Set For Comanche Monday October 6

Next Monday October 6 opens Comanche Trades Day with merchants offering special bargains. Farmers and traders plan livestock poultry and produce sales and trades. A large weekend crowd is expected unless rain reduces turnout.

Coleman proprietor M. Coleman found his north side square store robbed of about 28 dollars from the cash drawer after he stepped out and returned. The thief entered and left through the back door and did not take checks or open the safe.

Comanche County Ginning Report Shows Strong Cotton Yield

One hundred and thirty-seven bales of cotton were ginned in Comanche County by October 1. Cotton brought 17 cents per pound Thursday. Cotton seed is selling at 54 dollars per ton. The yield this year is much better than usual with some acres yielding more than a half bale.

WPA Grant for Duster School Construction Progress

The Duster community approved bonds to build a new one story six room school with auditorium using native stone in the same design as the courthouse. Sponsored by a WPA appropriation, work advances toward completion around January 1. An extra allotment of 14,713 dollars was approved for finishing touches and facility improvements.

Comanche Tax Collection Receives Positive Report

City Secretary and Tax Collector Hardie Jones says tax statements were mailed and many Comanche property holders have paid 1941 taxes. City tax roll stands at 1,599,799 with 23,196.98 revenue. School tax roll at 1,758,519 yielding 17,585.19. City valuation rose from 1,540,592 to 1,758,519 and School valuation from 1,693,044 to 1,585,190. 88 percent of 1940 city taxes collected.

L H McPherson Dies. Funeral Held at Pottsville Church of Christ

Lem H. McPherson, retired farmer and stockman, died Saturday near Comanche. Funeral services were held Monday at Pottsville Church of Christ, with burial in Pottsville Cemetery. Survived by wife Willie Mae, son Cyril, daughter Mrs Geo L Rose, four grandchildren, a sister, and three brothers. Born March 6, 1871 in Arkansas, he lived mostly around Pottsville before moving to Comanche County.

Howington Served on Five Committees and Led Enrolled Bills

Frank Howington, state representative from Comanche for Comanche and Mills Counties, served on five committees in the last House session and once acted as Speaker during an absence. He chaired the Enrolled Bills Committee and sat on Agriculture Highway and Motor Traffic Penitentiary and Fish and Game committees. He helped secure state appointments for ten people from his district and was on the milk test investigation committee alongside Bill Chambers and Representative Goodman.

Death of R. B. Lee in New Mexico

Word came Thursday of the death of R. B. Lee in New Mexico. He married the former Miss Dixie McCrary, sister of Pink McCrary. Burial will be at Albuquerque.

Livestock Association Plans Annual Meeting in Comanche

The Comanche County Livestock Association will hold its annual membership meeting at the Comanche County Court House at 7 30 p m Friday October 17. After director and officer elections Dr I B Broughton from the Sonora Experiment Station will discuss diseases in sheep and cattle. Throckmorton Man Held on Swindling Charge

T. S. Hibbitts of Throckmorton was arrested in Lockhart and held for Comanche County on a swindling complaint. He is accused of passing a $100 worthless check to Mose Strickland of De Leon for a cow. Hibbitts posted a $1,000 bond.

Shiloh Church Founded in 1872 Still Flourishing

The Shiloh Primitive Baptist congregation near Komanche County's Whitney graveyard marks a 70 year milestone in 1942. It began in 1872 with nine charter members, rebuilt its church in 1880 and again in 1941, and remains a center of community life under Elder Len Dalton with services on the fourth Saturday and Sunday each month.

Two Men Fined for Stripping Automobile in De Leon Case

J. B. Talley and Carl Nelson were arrested in Ballinger last week and brought to Comanche to face charges of stealing tires, battery, and generator from a car in De Leon. Both pleaded guilty in County Court, were fined $5 and costs each, served one day in jail, and ordered to replace all stolen parts.

Comanche County Aircraft Warning Service Organized

A Comanche County gathering in the County Court Room approved plans to form an Aircraft Warning Service led by chair J. H. Arthur. Post Organizers were named to recruit interviewers and collect volunteer data across towns including Comanche De Leon Gustine Beattie and more. The effort is coordinated by Headquarters 3rd Interceptor Command, Tampa.

Gustine Youth Arrested For Theft Of Car

Gustine youth Billie McDonald was arrested Friday by Comanche County officers Sheriff W. Spivey and Deputy Manley Stor on charges of stealing an automobile owned by W. M. Beaty. The Beaty car was stolen early Thursday morning and recovered in Eastland. McDonald is held in jail.

Hasse Man First To Pay County And State Taxes

Andrew Roberson of Hasse was the first Comanche County man to pay county and state taxes on opening day October 1 at the Assessor-Collector office. Dr J C Gaddy of Comanche followed as the second payer. Roberson and wife received the first poll tax receipt. Wagner Roberson was third. County tax rate listed as 6 4 3.
