Fourteen Comanche Schools to Serve Hot Lunch

Public schools in Comanche County will offer hot lunches this year under County Superintendent Dale Howard. A twenty acre garden near De Leon supplied produce, with a Government canning plant at De Leon and WPA stock from Comanche assisting. Miss Berwyne Bass will supervise lunch rooms with an office in the courthouse. Fairview School still seeks a local manager at $33 per month.

Glider School Planned for Hamilton Area

A pre glider school will be established in Hamilton within thirty days. The site on Highway 281 will cover 504 acres and 75 planes will be kept on the field. The Army payroll is projected at about $60,000 monthly with 60 initial officers and instructors.

Williams Invited to Ordnance Conference in Columbus Ohio

Herbert Williams of Comanche son of Mr and Mrs T J Williams and Higginbotham Bros manager is invited by the War Department to a series of indoctrinal conferences on Ordnance Depot Operations in Columbus Ohio October 5 to 15. About 125 men are invited to be considered for commissioning in the Army Specialist Corps or the Army of the United States.

Thompson Made Ensign In Navy

Clinton Thompson of Comanche has been promoted to ensign in the United States Navy according to Pearl Harbor Hawaii. He has served sixteen years and rose from Chief Electrician's Mate to ensign. He was at Pearl Harbor during the December 7 attack but survived without injury.

Men On The Farm Deferred Draft List Warned

General Hershey in Washington says farm workers may be placed on deferred draft lists under new War Manpower rules. County boards must classify registrants by skill and training for essential agricultural jobs such as dairy farming cowpunching buttermaking hatchery work nursery care and farm laboring. Also consider availability of trained replacements and draft exemptions.

Blanket Man Found Hanged At Farm Home

Frank William Lappe a 61 year old farmer was found hanged early Tuesday morning at the Blanket area farm home five miles from Blanket. His body was discovered by his son Alfred Stewart Lappe with feet weighted by about 25 pounds of scrap iron. A metal tub lay near the scene and a rope attached to a mesquite tree fork was used. Justice of the Peace T J Code said the evidence indicated suicide and there was no clear motive though worry over the war was noted. The family had leased the farm from D E Crisp for cash rent and had lived there three years. Lappe was born December 13 1880 and was a longtime member of the Blanket Baptist Church.

War on Rats Aims to Curb Typhus in Comanche

A. N. Whitehead of Fort Worth leads a Comanche rat killing drive sponsored by the Lions Club to prevent Typhus fever. The State Health Department notes two fever cases in Comanche weeks ago with no new reports. The campaign extends through the business district and into about half the square. poison is placed in stores.
