The census report shows Comanche County at 25 748 people, down from 27 186 in 1910 and 23 109 in 1900. Comanche city has 3 524 residents, up from 2 756 in 1910. De Leon records 3 302, rising from 1 015 in 1910 and 807 in 1900, while county growth lags century earlier.
Tom Cox and Miss Lucile Lindsey eloped with friends last week and were married Monday at Sam Sloneker’s home in the western country. Cox is son of Jim Cox and Lindsey daughter of J. G. and Mrs. Lindsey. They returned home to warm congratulations from friends.
The Chief announces a price rise and a new pay in advance policy for all subscribers starting October 1. Names will be dropped when paid periods end, and readers are asked to settle any arrears to avoid cancellation.
Four graduates of the University of Mexico are serving 48 waiters in an Austin restaurant as they earn while learning English in Texas. Their misadventures include a cotton field job where they were paid for seed, not lint, and lost the position. A university professor helped place them in their current roles to continue earning and studying.
About six to seven thousand soldiers attended the Ninetieth Division reunion in Oklahoma City. Resolutions urged permanent General ranks for Charles H. Martin and Joseph H. ONeil. Capt. F B Timmons of Sipe Springs attended. Comanche county expected to send a large delegation to San Antonio next year.
A tight contest between the American Legion and the High School football teams Tuesday afternoon ended with the Legion scoring the only touchdown in the fourth quarter as Durham plunged over from the goal line and Hill added the kick. The Legion faces Baylor Cubs next, Friday October 15.
A rally day for the Sunday school is set for next Sunday at the Presbyterian Church. A splendid program has been arranged. Mr W L Fullerton of San Antonio, a Sunday school expert, will give an address on the Work of the Sunday School at the evening hour. All practiced wine.
Congressman Blanton returns to Washington during the summer recess to study the Fed erated organization and press for budget cuts. He cites 90 360 clerks in Washington and argues at least 40 000 are unnecessary while Democrats and Republicans push for federal economy. He points to idle workers and waste across bureaus and trucks as proof.
Washington correspondent Leo R. Sack argues federal spending remains high after the armistice. He cites marginal drops in Washington civilian employees from 117,760 on November 11 1918 to 90,860 on August 1 last, and an overall national payroll rise since 1917, despite calls for economy.
District court will meet in Co manche on Monday October 18. There is no petit jury for the first week. The jurors list for the term is printed in this issue of the Chief with the dates.
Corpus Christi Sept 27 A hen owned by Dr W E Wills appears nervous and prostrated after a discovery of a nest of alligator eggs. Six eggs were brought home and placed under the hen. One hatched briefly but the bird abandoned the hatchling and raced off in alarm.
Temporary injunction issued by Judge Ireland Graves restrains the Secretary of State from certifying American party candidates for public office on the official ballot. The writ is returnable next Monday in Austin. case A. T. Morris vs. C. D. Mills Secretary of State alleges failure to comply with election law conventions and nominee certification.
Posters announce a revival meeting at the Baptist tabernacle starting next Sunday October 3 with Rev. Forrest Maddox as pastor. Services at 10 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. daily feature soloist A G Kochenberger, noted for strong preaching and uplifting music. The public is invited and a large turnout is hoped for.
No White House mandate seen guiding bureau chiefs. District of Columbia workers earned $1 321 average in 1919. A wholesale purge of 38 000 employes could save $39 830 000 in salaries, with critics arguing efficiency would not suffer. If nationwide pruning occurred, about 100 090 workers could be dismissed.
The Texas Senate passed the Dean election bill by 21 to 6 to allow women enfranchised by the nineteenth amendment to vote in November and future elections. The measure re enacts poll tax provisions for women, creates exemption certificates for those who qualified, requires deputy poll workers, and sets a 15 cent fee. soldiers sailors and marines are exempt.
