The Comanche Chamber of Commerce plans a weekly Goodwill Day series each Wednesday from September 27 through November 18. Merchants will stage a trades day event as the first in a longer series to boost local business and community spirit.
The Chief reports the start of the Goodwill Days 1957 in Comanche with Wednesday promotions and a Shop at Home campaign. Merchants advertise sale items at Hub, Hathcock, Durham and others, plus tax payment booths by Jaycees and a 65 piece band performance at 2:00 pm.
Comanche High School hosts a Harvest Festival carnival Friday night November 22 at the gym starting 6 p.m. The event features booths games and queen coronation with CHS clubs and Homemaking Club in charge of concessions. Queen nominees include Jane Matthews Wanda Hilliard Linda Flanagan and Janice Isham with duchesses and escorts named for each class.
Turkey shoot event at Priddy scheduled for Sunday November 24 in the afternoon. Organizer invites participants and the Priddy spokesperson urges attendance.
Sunday School results show Gustine Methodist 67 and First Baptist 300 leading classrooms. Other tallies include Taylor's Chapel 28 Proctor Methodist 20 Sidney Methodist 36 and East Side Baptist 4 with a total of 1 578 nationally in the Sunday event.
The Chief will publish one day early due to Thanksgiving. It will be mailed Wednesday November 27 instead of Thursday. Correspondents and advertisers should submit copy promptly.
Comanche Public Schools will observe a two day Thanksgiving holiday on November 28 29 as announced by Superintendent Joe Harper. Attendance in recent days nears normal despite some flu activity among students.
Mrs. L. C. Durham and daughter Betty visited Lou Ellen Durham a Baylor freshman in Waco on Saturday.
John Gleaton, Comanche High School sophomore full back, wins the final Chief football guessing contest with nine correct of ten games including college grid picks. Second prize goes to Mrs. E. H. Denny, with a perfect college win line. third prize to C. G. Kiser for closest Granbury De Leon score.
The J W Massingale coached Sidney Eagles face E V McCarty led Mozelle Mustangs in a six man bi district championship at Hufford Field Coleman Friday night November 22 with game time 8. Sidney seeks to extend its bi district dominance while Mozelle aims to upset and reach the regional title game against Miles. Senior starters include Reed Vineyard Carlisle Lusk Merworth Jones and teammates Carlisle back Reed 135 Vineyard 135 Carlisle 145 Lusk 155 Merworth 150 Jones 148 ends.
Comanche County hunters join overflow from West Texas as opening weekend yields several bucks. Ed Hicks bags two fine deer, G W Ware reports an eight point and a four pointer from San Saba County, and Hollis Burdetee finds success near Cherokee. No serious injuries reported amid fat, well-fed deer due to ample forage from recent rains.
Whaley Jackson of Comanche Rt 5 won a transistor radio in Humble's 12 week contest. J. H. Tupin in Humble confirms the Houston telegram. Entries judged on sincerity and originality, with four grand winners to receive a six day trip to the Cotton Bowl for two in Dallas.
Comanche Independent School District reports steady tax receipts under tax collector Lucille Ellis. October collections totaled 14166.29 and November through November 20 amounted to 5534.37, with total renditions at 5063810.75 and district tax due 75,950.16 at 1.50 per 100. Payments accepted through January 31 without penalty at the Comanche tax office east of the National Bank on the square.
The Comanche Jaycees host a Turkey Shoot on Sunday afternoon November 24 at the Rodeo Grounds. Shooting starts about 1 30 PM with an invitation to win a Thanksgiving turkey by local Junior Chamber of Commerce members.
The Hamilton Bulldogs and Ranger Bulldogs meet at Tarleton State College Memorial Field in Stephenville on Saturday night for the bi-district playoff. Hamilton, District 8-AA champion under coach Kenneth Scott, brings a 2-0-0 record and last playoff loss in 1956. Ranger, District 7-AA winner coached by Harold Barrett, enters with 7-3 and past state champions in 1953. Chamber of Commerce and Tarleton State sponsor. seats sold in Ranger, Hamilton, and Stephenville.
Comanche businessman L Huett of Service Drug Store previews Philco’s 1958 line at Medaris Company in Dallas. He notes Hyper-Power Television promises clearer, stronger pictures and says first Philco sets and new Hi Fi record players will arrive soon with clock radios and portable models.
Comanche County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee schedules a December 10 referendum for upland cotton growers to decide whether 1958 marketing quotas will be in effect. Eligible voters include all who produced upland cotton in 1957. Quotas trigger penalties and full parity price supports if two thirds approve. if not, no quotas and 50 percent parity supports. Acreage allotments remain in effect for 1958 to determine price support eligibility.
Mr and Mrs Rex Robinson of Dallas visited his mother Mrs Davis Wilbiar and relatives over the weekend. The chairman noted that legislation directs the Secretary of Agriculture to proclaim marketing quotas for the next upland cotton crop when supply exceeds normal. Quotas take effect only if approved by at least two thirds of growers in a referendum.
