Thirty Comanche High basketball hopefuls reported for the opening workouts of the 1957 58 season. The squad, coached by Travis Henry and Bill Scoggins, loses all starting members from last year’s bi district championship team. Key lettermen include Gary Don Swearengin John Gleaton and Butch Loudermilk with many others listed as squad players. The Indians will field A and B schedules with Travis Hary directing the A team and Bill Scoggins the B. Track work begins under Don Walker as plans for a new cinder track at Indian Memorial Stadium are announced. The season opens November 21 against Rising Star with both boys and girls A squads scheduled.
Local lumberman Bob McElroy wins the Comanche Chief football guessing contest with his prediction of the Comanche Granbury score 26 to 6. Melvin Harkins runner up earns a two year Chief subscription, while third prize goes to Mrs Tom Cox Jr. and several others receive honorable mentions for predicting multiple games.
Brownwood District Superintendent J W Whitefield will preach at 10 50 Sunday morning at the First Methodist Church Comanche Expects a cordial invitation from Pastor Robert W Walker for all to attend.
Winslow Arizona remembers Albert Sidney Harris born in 1865 in Mississippi and living in Comanche before moving to Winslow. He is now the town’s oldest resident and spends his days writing letters and sharing garden gifts with neighbors while recounting a long career in Texas and local commerce.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce and merchants announce a trade-at-home Christmas shopping campaign called Goodwill Days. It runs Wednesdays from November 27 to December 18 with a grand Santa Day finale, tickets issued to participating firms, cash prizes of 100, 25, 15 and 10 dollars, and extensive giveaways.
The Jaycees annual Turkey Shoot moves to the Comanche Rodeo Grounds with events Saturday and Sunday afternoons November 15 16. The prize gun will be awarded Sunday at 5 PM.
Donald T. Ward, UT senior aeronautical engineering student and Arnold Air Society member, won a $750 Douglas Aircraft Company Scholarship for leadership, scholastic standing, and military proficiency. He is the son of Wayne Ward, formerly of Sidney, now in Grand Prairie, and a 1953 Sidney High School honor graduate.
The J. B. Layne Elementary School PTA Art Exhibit moved to November 14 15 and is on display at the Homemaking Cottage of Comanche High School. The traveling Texas Fine Arts exhibit invites the public to view the fall showcase of Texas artists. Mrs Charles Gray coordinated support from the local Texas Fine Arts Association members. Mr and Mrs Brownlee have moved back to Comanche from Iraan after several months away.
Rev G H Horton announces a Congregational Methodist church will organize this Sunday at 2 30 PM in the home of Mrs Lennie Plummer 409 Fast Walcott. About 20 local families have shown interest and organizers hope others will attend to form the new church, with plans for a building.
The Sidney Eagles six man champions travel to Hufford Field Coleman to face the Mozelle Mustangs in the bi district playoff opener on Friday November 22. Sidney under coach J W Massingale has a 7 2 record after a slow start and has won three straight district titles. The Mozelle Mustangs coached by E V McCarty swept their district and earned their first playoff berth since 1951.
Comanche County tax office reports October receipts totaling $100,989.41, down from $106,178.06 last October. Assessor-Collector George R. Goosby notes weaker harvests this year reduced tax revenue while opening month payments constitute about 40 percent of yearly assessments. Major taxpayers include Humble Pipeline, Santa Fe Railroad, MKT Railroad, Southwest Natural Gas, Texas Electric Service, and Tex, Power & Light. Principal individuals are Dudley Brothers and Laird. Higginbotham Bros. & Co. also prominent.

Last year’s drive raised 6760.07 dollars, 3361.26 kept in Comanche County. drive chairman Joel Waring urges broad participation and suggests a day's pay as the personal contribution. Brady visitors include Mr and Mrs Howell Cobb and son Robert. Ranger Bulldogs upset Coleman Bluecats 21 6 to earn district playoff spot. Ranger unbeaten in 2A 7 with one game left versus Hamilton.
Mr and Mrs W E Lowrey of Comanche celebrate their sixty first wedding anniversary. Their son W C Lowrey from Fort Worth visited with wife and daughter. The couple wed November 11 1896 at Camp San Saba near Brady. They moved to Comanche in May 1943 on doctor’s advice.
David Emmitt Werner 78 a longtime Comanche resident and former plumber died at 2 40 p m Thursday in Brownwood hospital Funeral services were held Friday at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Henry Chambers officiating Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery Singers were from the local Baptist Church Pallbearers were Ted Bear J L Woolsey Sam Phifer Frankie Jones Bob Carpenter and Miles Bagley He was active in the Volunteer Fire Department for 43 years and survived by three daughters four brothers and other relatives.
