Turkeys Shipped From Comanche Bring $175000 Plus This Season

Fifteen carloads of dressed turkeys from Comanche to Northern and Eastern markets sold during the last two weeks. About 350000 pounds shipped. farmers and growers received over 175000 dollars. Norris notes 65 percent marketed for Thanksgiving and 35 percent for Christmas. Labor shortages limited shipments as 100 workers were employed at peak. Toms averaged 28 cents and hens 34 cents.

Beattie Farmer H. S. Halbrooks Dies at 58

H S Halbrooks age 58 of Beattie died November 3 after three years of illness at his home. He was born in Hartzell Alabama April 11 1889 and moved to Comanche County as a child. Burial at Sandhill funeral by Rev H F Wilkins. He married Lula Elizabeth Fields in 1908 and leaves a large family including children Lloyd in Bryan and several daughters and grandchildren.

Baptist Brotherhood Organized at Gustine

A Brotherhood with fourteen members was organized Thursday night at First Baptist Church of Gustine. Roland Miller was elected president with M. Autrey as vice president, Wayne Hayes as secretary-treasurer, N. E. Palmer as program chairman, and E. W. Strickland as activity chairman. Assisting were Dr. H. H. Inzer of De Leon and Robert Eaton, E. S. Fagan, and Tom Beene of Comanche. about a dozen others from Gustine and Comanche attended.

Chief to Be Out Early Next Week

The Chief will publish two days earlier due to Thanksgiving. It will be mailed Tuesday evening so rural routes receive it by Thanksgiving Day. The issue will include coverage of the Comanche versus De Leon football game deciding district standings and invites local news and ads early.

KP Lodge Holds Special Meeting In Comanche Area

A special KP Lodge meeting is set for Tuesday night November 25 at the local lodge hall. Brownwood will provide entertainment with a magician and a wildlife movie shown by Game Warden John Woods. Dinner will be served. all members are urged to attend for future plans.

Colemans Buy Waco Theatre

Miss Annie Coleman and Tom Coleman of Comanche close a deal to own the Melrose Theatre in Waco near Baylor University. They plan to take charge Friday and promise to develop a top local show with new equipment and building. Miss Coleman previously ran the Hico theatre and has teaching credentials.

County Drilling Water Well On Courthouse Lawn

Comanche's Courthouse Square known for two wells will gain a new well near the northeast corner of the courthouse. Drilling began Wednesday to furnish lawn water and supply the courthouse, per minutes of the Commissioners Court.

Comanche Baptists to Welcome New Pastor Friday Night

Members of the First Baptist Church of Comanche will host a fellowship meeting at the church Friday night followed by a reception to welcome Rev. Arthur Johnson and his family. A large crowd attended his recent revival in Goldthwaite and heard him before his move to Comanche.

Scott Well Now Producing About 0 Barrels Daily

Coats and Foster Drilling Company of Lubbock reports the No. 1 Scott wildcat in northeast Comanche County about 17 miles from Comanche and 2 miles east of Comyn is now a producer on a small scale. The well drilled 3528 to 4300 feet in the Ellenburger and after acidizing and swabbing has yielded around 50 barrels per day, with no water encountered.

Miss Willie Vineyard Dies at 54 in Comanche

Miss Willie May Vineyard 54, daughter of the late J W Vineyard and Mrs D L Vineyard, died November 15 at the home of Mr and Mrs B Y Webb in Comanche where she had lived with her mother. Funeral services were held at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev S J Isham and Rev J D Smoot officiating. Interment followed in Sardis Cemetery. The Mount Pleasant Quartet sang. She was born September 4, 1893 in Soda Strings community and earlier lived with her parents in Hasse before moving to Comanche two years ago. Surviving are her mother and brothers and sisters Mrs B B Fields, Mrs B Y Webb, Mrs C C Haynie, J F Vineyard all of Comanche, and Jack Vineyard of Downing.

Proctor Couple Hurt As Train Backs Into Auto

William Harmon and his wife of Proctor suffered severe injuries when a Santa Fe freight train backed into their car on Highway 377 at Cresson. They were rescued by Dillon Funeral Home attendants and taken to Parker County Hospital in Weatherford in critical condition.

Evridge Buys 24 000 Acre South Dakota Ranch

Wayne Evridge a Comanche County rancher bought a 13 840 acre ranch and leased 11 160 more in northwest South Dakota. He plans to run about 1 000 Hereford cattle and 5 000 sheep along with 400 acres of wheat land. The Evridges, with two young children, plan to move in May.
