Come-Back Farmer Honored In Leon District

A. T. Gilchrest is chosen as the Come-Back Farmer by the Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District. Living near Beattie with his wife and one daughter, he expanded land from 122 acres to 36 and 180 acre tracts, added irrigation in 1967, and improved crops and pastures. Peanut yields rose from 20 to 125 bushels per acre by 1969, with 122 bushels in 1970, supported by district services and insecticide strategies. He and his family have invested in bermuda grass, lovegrass, and better housing since 1966.
