About $12,000 in delinquent taxes remained unpaid as of September. A Fort Worth firm contracted by the Commissioners Court to collect taxes started September 1 and has not filed suits yet. Officials expect steady collections with minimal costs to taxpayers and say the tax rate was cut from 60 to 45 cents this year to boost recovery.

The Community Chest drive to raise Comanche’s quota of 1000 dollars will start here Friday. Miss Mary E. Jones will lead the drive with assistance from several ladies. Funds stay local to aid Comanche County’s needy and are directed only to truly needed places.
Rev. H. J. Sanders, pastor on the Comanche Circuit, went to Fort Worth for the annual conference. He reported a successful year with all benevolences paid in full, about $1600 raised for all purposes, and 30 new members, bringing total membership to 427.
The public responded nicely to the poppy sale here Saturday, according to Mrs. E. D. Cox of the American Legion Auxiliary who sponsored the sale. Girls assisting Mrs. Cox included Misses Maxine Nichols, Joy Jean Eaton, Francis Williams, Catherine Cauley and Verdelle Marshall.
Rev. Charles H. Cole left for the Fort Worth conference and brought back a strong report. The church gained 65 members, totaling 352 after removing moved or lost members. All assessments were paid, with $6,261 raised for all purposes including $2,000 for the church building. the board requests Rev. Cole’s return after his third year.
Dr. C. W. Gray and Dr. A. J. Gray have moved to new offices on the first floor of the First National Bank building. Their suite is at the rear with entrance on the east side, in a remodeled building fully equipped for modern offices.

A early Saturday blaze destroyed I M Vineyard Grocery and Market B A Riley Grocery and the old Cash Store site on the square. Losses reach seven to ten thousand for Vineyard and about seven thousand for Evridge with partial insurance on Riley and Evridge. Fire Chief Bob Graham notes stubborn flames. rehabbing plans include Vineyard opening in Scurry building soon and Riley resuming business later.
Comanche band members unveiled 56 new uniforms including gold coats black trimmings and black belts as they paraded on Wednesday. Warren Vineyard thanks supporters such as the Comanche Lions Club schol board and local businesspeople. director Pat Howard says the band will wear the outfits at the Armistice game in Dublin on Thursday.
The Comanche High Indians visit the Dublin Lions on Armistice Day at 2 15. Assistant Coach Marion Smith warned Dublin will outweigh Comanche by about ten pounds per man and expect a hard game. Comanche beat Dublin 20 to 13 last year while Dublin won 12 to 0 in 1935 on an icy field.
Brownwood hosts Armistice Day football with two shows on Armistice Day. At 1 pm the Brownwood Lions face Sweetwater Mustangs in an Oil Belt game at the high school stadium. Nearby Howard Payne Stadium hosts the St Edward's Tigers vs Howard Payne Yellow Jackets Texas Conference clash and the Daniel Baker Hill Billies meet Abilene Christian Wildcats in a homecoming feature.
The annual Red Cross Roll Call in Comanche is scheduled for Wednesday November 17. Mrs. John Reese chairs the drive to call on every business and home with a $1 membership. A smaller donation is allowed but not a membership. The Comanche quota is 282, and a team of volunteers will assist.
Mayor John E. Hoff proclaims November 17 as Annual Red Cross Day in Comanche City. The proclamation honors the Red Cross work in floods fires and other disasters and urges public support. The document is dated November 10, 1937, and bears Hoff's signature.
Hasse girls coached by F E Henry opened with a double header on November 5 at the Hasse gym. They beat Sidney 16 15 then Gustine 15 10. Sidney coach Macon saw his first loss as Steele led Sidney with 14 points and Tolliver sparked Hasse. In the second game Hasse defeated Gustine 15 10 with the same lineup. Hasse boys under M B Miller beat Gustine 29 9 as Elliott led with 11. Priddy boys, coached by Ray Durin, crushed Sidney Eagles 31 11 with Kumepel scoring 16.
Hon. W. Marcus Weatherred of Coleman, Past Grand Master of Texas Masonic Lodges, will visit Hope Lodge Monday night to confer the third degree in Masonry. Grover C. Cook, lodge Master, invites all lodges in the jurisdiction to attend the Comanche meeting.
Local business firms in Comanche announce they will keep their establishments closed on Thursday November 1 to observe customary Sunday hours. The list includes beauty shops barbers dry cleaners grocery stores banks and other services in town.
In a district court, C. F. Jeske faced two trials resulting in hung juries. The first, on a charge of accessory to burglary tied to a 1933 mohair theft, ended after a 10 to 2 deadlock. The second, over wheat theft from the William Chilton barn on August 30, 1933, concluded with another deadlock at 7 to 5. Judge R. B. Cross declared mistrials in both cases.
The Sutton Dudley Drug Store now handles Western Union Telegraphic work and hosts the teleprint machine for receiving and sending messages. Operator Grace Rigby will stay briefly in Comanche to train Mr. Dudley and Cliff Richards. The move allows 24 hour service during store hours, improving convenience for customers.
Congressman W R Poage of the Eleventh District and his companion Miss Frances Cotten were hospitalized after a head on collision at the Highways 81 and 67 intersection in North De Leon near midnight. Kirk of De Leon escaped with minor injuries as Poage's car and Cotten’s vehicle were demolished. Poage, a first term congressman from Waco, had been en route to Throckmorton. Cotten is a Texas Highway Commission engineer's assistant and sister of Mrs. O L Freeman of Comanche.
Boyce Briscoe completed a Monday purchase to acquire the Scene Cleaners from E. E. McNatt in Comanche. Briscoe, son of Rev. J. W. Briscoe and former New Majestic Theatre operator, will lead the tailoring business and hire an expert tailor.
Jim Edwards aged 53 native of Comanche County died at his Harmony home 4:45 Saturday after illness starting Tuesday night. Funeral at White Point Church with Rev. Sanders and Rev. Cole. burial in White Point cemetery. Pallbearers listed. survived by wife Pardee Lewis, children Chester Hewell Justice and others, three brothers, a sister, and his mother. Member of Harmony Methodist Church.
Brownwood High School B team defeated Gustine 12 to 6 at Gustine on November 4. Gustine faces undefeated Indian Creek next Friday. Mrs. J. Frank Norris Jr of Fort Worth visits her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Denaho.
Twelve cars of dressed turkeys are headed to the November market from Comanche area with five shipped by Tuesday night and seven more expected before Thanksgiving. The Farmers Produce Company plant employs over a hundred workers and can handle two cars daily. Top price is up two cents from last year as good feed supports solid quality. Fewer No 2 birds reduce overall income, but demand from distant and local buyers helps sustain Comanche as a turkey marketing center.
Brightman family begins remodeling of their building on the northwest square corner to house the mill and feed business full time. A gasoline pump on the east will remain for existing customers while the storefront gains a modern glass front and improved appearance.
Hon Clyde L Garrett of Eastland congressman met residents in Comanche Tuesday and announced plans to leave for Washington to attend a special session. J W Cockrill secretary to Garrett departed for Washington to handle duties until the congressman arrives. Judge and Mrs R A Luker and Mr and Mrs Lon L Smithson were visitors over the weekend.
