Tax payers can split state and local taxes this year with deadlines to avoid penalties. If the first half is paid by November 30, the second half is due January 31 with possible interest. The split plan is available by law but not yet adopted in Comanche.
Local items report oil prospects in Comanche County with a predicted payback, Meadows Grocery planned to merge with Taylor-Hanna of Waco in a $300,000 deal, and Comanche High School girls basketball beat De Leon 16 to 5. Additional notes cover a Fort Worth hospital stay for Milton West, a planned oil drilling machine shipment to Sipe Springs, and marriages licenses in the area.
MMAR School to give its Thanksgiving program Tuesday evening November 23 in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. Music will be furnished by the High School Orchestra under the direction of Pat Ho.
More than 2100 bales of cotton have been marketed or stored in Comanche this season. Up to Wednesday 1156 bales weighed at Comanche Cotton Yard and 1121 stored for Government loan at Brightman warehouse, with a slight duplication of about 100 bales. By Thursday 1680 bales had been ginned in Comanche.
A one day campaign raised 105 for the Community Chest fund in Comanche County. Mrs. J H Arthur of the Welfare Association praised the effort and pledged further solicitation. Miss Mary E Jones and Miss Eldeana Lane led the drives with plans to reach more citizens while Eaton serves as treasurer.
An invitation basketball tournament will be held at Hasse today and tomorrow November 18. Twenty strong teams including Iredell Carlton Priddy Gustine Hasse Sipe Springs are invited to the Sidney Gym December 3-4. Sidney boys recently beat Pettit 16-14 and Iredell 26-15 with Gene Hall standout.
In the Comanche region residents honor a harvest of plenty and national peace. The piece praises local prosperity, notes few extreme classes, and urges gratitude, remembering Lincoln and Edgar A. Guest as it salutes the American ideals and the flag.
Comanche witnessed a long Army pass as two infantry columns moved toward Mineral Wells for a sham battle. The march included bivouacs at Lometa San Saba and Richland Springs with units heading toward Evant Walnut Springs and Stephenville. All vehicles traveled in darkness to avoid simulating air attacks by Barksdale Field planes.
Fritz Dinkelage, 43, ranchman near Priddy, was found guilty as an accomplice to burglary in a warehouse theft of mohair on September 21, 1933. The jury set his punishment at two years in the state penitentiary. Benton Layman testified for the State as principal in the burglary.
Miss Nan Pate is in Tyler for studies at a local business college as she pursues vocational training and seeks stronger employment opportunities.
Twelve cars of dressed turkeys shipped from Comanche for the Thanksgiving market, up from eight cars last year and four in 1935. Farmers Produce Company manager George C. McKinzie says about $40,000 received and roughly 60 percent marketed. Top price was 15 cents a pound, higher than November last year. Most turkeys went to northern and eastern cities. quality is high with few below No 1. About 200 pickers worked, plant ran mostly night and day, and Christmas demand expected to open around December 5.
The three Comanche gins will stay closed on Thanksgiving Day. Managers announced the shutdown as most cotton has already been ginned and much of it sold or placed in a Government warehouse with a loan obtained.
Robert A. Adcock aged 83, a long time Gustine resident and retired farmer, died at his home Saturday November 13 after illness. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery with Elder Newton officiating. Born in Tennessee November 7, 1854, he moved to Gustine from Oglesby and is survived by his widow and several children including Rance Adcock, Gustine merchant.
C. P. St. Clair spent the weekend in Abilene with Mrs. St. Clair who is ill and in a local hospital.
The Chief will be out early next week due to Thanksgiving. Mail timing shifts include Wednesday night mail for the Chief, Thursday morning boxholder delivery, Friday delivery for subscribers, with Star Routes going out Thursday to readers on Democrat, Sidney, Sipe Springs, and Gustine. Contributors urged to submit material and ads promptly.
Dublin High School Lions shut out Comanche 13 to 0 on Armistice Day in Dublin. Belyeu scored both touchdowns as Dublin outgained Comanche in offense and defense. Indians managed three first downs and only 2 or 3 completed passes while Dublin built first half and third quarter scores. A three way title scenario looms with Hamilton and Gorman remaining on the schedule.
Texas Power and Light Company marks its twenty fifth anniversary this week with a feature ad detailing its history. The firm has operated in Comanche for twenty one years and notes multiple improvements since acquiring the local system.
Rev E N Scarlett 45 former pastor of Seventh Street Methodist Temple was appointed pastor of Comanche Methodist Church for the ensuing year by Bishop H A Boaz. Rev H J Sanders returned to Comanche Circuit. other appointments include J T McClure to Brownwood and G G Smith to Gustine Lamkin.
Stores will close Thursday November 25 for Thanksgiving. A 7:00 AM service at Comanche Baptist Church will include praise and prayer as Pastor Rev A Edwin Wilson hopes to announce the church debt payoff. The day features the annual Comanche High School Indians versus De Leon High School Bearcats football game at 2:00 PM.
Waisman’s Department Store opens a storewide sale with reduced prices on new stock. Sammy Waisman pledges red hot prices on high quality merchandise. The owner and Mrs. Waisman invite residents of Comanche County and nearby areas to visit during the event.
Former County Commissioner Eugene Estes of Gustine donated unusually large English walnuts to The Chief. He notes the six year old tree produced a half bushel, with walnuts two times the size found in stores.
Comanche High School Indians meet Gorman High School Panthers in an afternoon game at 3:00 PM. Gorman has troubled the Indians in past meetings, and this matchup is anticipated to be close as both teams show improvement since the season start. A solid crowd is expected after a weak showing at Dublin.

A new Texas law signed Monday cuts Comanche County court term from twelve weeks to nine. The district includes Comanche, Hamilton, Coryell and other counties. the change saves court reporter costs, reducing totals to about 75.08 per month per county and cutting Comanche travel expenses.
Dave Boyd proprietor of The Chief Cafe in Higginbotham Building offers a free Farmers Exchange Service for Comanche County. Articles to buy trade or sell are listed on a cafe bulletin board and neighbors are invited to use the cafe as a trading headquarters. Boyd retired from the Cotton Belt after ~25 years and then ran a dairy before buying the cafe.
Clarence Huett owner of Service Drug Store introduces a Junior Business Builders Club with under fifteen’s as solicitors. Prizes go to top sellers by total sales receipts at campaign end. A list of members is posted in the store alongside a new Heinz soup fountain offering quick meals.
