Raymond Sherrill delivers a commencement oration urging national unity and effort to support soldiers abroad. He calls Americans to train, sacrifice, and keep the home fires burning to strengthen democracy and aid the nation’s war aims.
The Comanche Troop of Cavalry led by Mr Ossie Greene will be mustered into the National Guard Service next week likely Tuesday or Wednesday. They will then be mustered into Federal service after assembling at Camp Mabry in Austin within about two weeks. The troop has its minimum number and is recruiting to exceed it before call up.
Comanche Camp W. O. W. and Comanche Grove W. O. W. plan a June 14 1918 event to mark the 25th anniversary. All camps in Comanche are urged to send delegates including the Consul Commander Guardian and Clerks. Members 25 years in good standing will receive sterling silver honor badges. A roaring sound from the well at E. K. Denny’s home in East Comanche drew crowds and speculation of a gas pool beneath the knoll. Locals debated the cause while Denny plans to secure water, pull the piping, and gauge the gas flow. Oil lease interest spiked in the area.
The Brownwood Bulletin reports a contract for a 3500 foot deep test well near Downing in Comanche county 12 miles north of Comanche on the Z Hulsey tract. M T Smith & Son will drill with a standard rig after a prior 640 foot session by Strawn Schueler and others.
The Methodist revival begun Sunday morning grows in town interest. Rev. J. A. Old, a strong preacher, brings messages benefiting the town. Rev. I. T. Huckabee leads the singing. Other churches cooperate. Christians are stirred toward deeper consecration and the unsaved show interest. Services 10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church.
A July 1 road bond election replaces the June 15 vote for Comanche and De Leon precincts due to a legislative change. New law limits bonds to 30 years, forcing a fresh election and petitions for the issuance of 30-year bonds. The court ordered the July 1 election after lawmakers updated the bonds term.
Comanche County surpasses its Red Cross drive quota of 5231.50 by 8356.67 total, an oversubscription of 3125.17 or 59 percent. The county credits leadership and local towns for strong turnout with several town readings and a note that final receipts may add less than 100 dollars.

The Local Board sent 65 men to Camp Bowie for training on the 8:45 train under Captain Irvin Warren. Names include Irwin Warren and many correspondents listed, with two men on the same train sent to Camp Travis: F. T. Munn and Willie Phifer.
Brownwood Bulletin reports Mr. Gillette and associates hold substantial acreage in Comanche county and will start a deep test well in the Hasse neighborhood soon. Work resumes on the Downing well and Ciobin well is expected to commence within weeks, signaling active oil development in the county.
The millinery department lists the latest Milam Hats for ladies and misses. Designers showcase new models and styles for current season shoppers.
Announcement directs all men aged 21 on or before June 5 1918 who did not register last year to register Wednesday June 5 at two local sites City Hall De Leon and Local Board office Comanche. Registration requires a form with nationality age birthday birth year and other details. Proxies allowed for illness or absentee registrants and mail-in cards accepted to ensure arrival by June 5.
An auction sale last Saturday raised 278.49 for the Local Red Cross Chapter. Highlights included a 24 pound sack of flour sold for 135.00, donated foods, and subscrption to The Fort Worth Star Telegram. An upcoming sale on First Monday plans ten sacks of flour and more items.
