Comanche County reports strong early success in its second war fund campaign, chaired by E. W. Harris. Smaller towns boosted interest before the opening, with more than six thousand dollars already subscribed as the drive continues to meet and potentially exceed the quota.
Laura Lu Waring earned one of twelve Brenan College scholarships at Gainsville Georgia for ranking in the top twelve in a nationwide competitive exam. The feat mirrors last year's winner, her sister Marion Waring, and brings double credit to the Waring family.
The Grammar School Junior Red Cross under Miss Rath Long and Miss Alma Rober gon raised 30 from about 120 members. They made 26 comfort kits 60 hospital towels and 20 wash rags, a creditable community effort.
R A McCulley, agent for Gulf Refining, received a 50 dollar donation Thursday to be given to the Red Cross. The Gulf Refining Co plans similar checks to every station in the state to aid all chapters in the drive, a gift gratefully received by the Comanche Chapter. The donation honors the Comanche Station as part of the firm and its Comanche business.
Pvt T W Brown of Company 60 from Comanche Texas reports back to Camp Travis on Wednesday May 15 after a 15 day furlough.
The revival meeting starts Sunday morning with Pastor W. B. Vaughn and Rev. J. A. Old of Dallas assisting. Brother Old has served in North Texas Conference leadership. An invitation is issued for all to attend to sing pray or contribute to the services at 11 a m and 8 30 p m.
West Ward W 5.5 Societies in School sold 836.87 in Thrift Stamps by grades with Miss Robertson Miss Grainger Miss Willcocks Miss Paine Miss Scott and Miss Hogan rooms. Grammar School societies totaled 1542.56 with Miss Harvey in charge the report by Prof. Waggoner notes. Total records incomplete due to standing issues.
The two week joint Baptist and Methodist revival in Sidney ended Sunday night. Rev J W Brisco of the Baptist church and Rev J T Ferguson of the Methodist church led the services with Prof R H Cornelius of Ft Worth directing the music. Nineteen professions and ten additions crowned the revival, praised by both pastors as among the greatest meetings ever held in Sidney.
Coleman’s Grocery and Bakery announces fresh daily varieties including almond macaroon English plum pudding oatmeal wafers spiced muffins and coconut macaroon as part of a Victory cakes selection for everyday needs.
The local draft board plans to send 65 men to Camp Bowie by train Monday at 8:00 a.m. Two more will depart for Camp Travis. A group of 96 was notified to appear Saturday at 2 p.m. for immediate selection, list including Jno Anthony Jr, T F Munn, Chas Whitlock, J J Allen, HL Morris and many others.
The local draft board sets June 5 as the first 21 year old registration date with quarterly repeats as more men reach 21. About 200 county men expected to register though numbers may be lower due to enlistments. Registration sites likely at Comanche De Leon and other points with 7 to 9 pm hours.
County Teacher's Examinations will be held Friday and Saturday June 7 and 8 at Comanche High School. Friday forenoon covers Physical Geography Physiology Composition Arithmetic Literature Solid Geometry. Friday afternoon lists Texas History Grammar Descriptive Geography Plane Geometry Psychology Bookkeeping. Saturday forenoon includes Spelling Writing Methods and Management Civics Reading Chemistry History of Education. Saturday afternoon features United States History General History Agriculture Algebra Physics Plane Trigonometry.
All candidates for county offices including the candidate for representative must file their names with the County Chairman before June 15 or on that date to appear on the ticket. State and District offices also require filing but at an earlier date.
Senior class shines with top marks as Miss Glennie Hoff and Miss Laura Waring post unprecedented averages. Waring sits at 99.6 for the year and maintains 98.5 across four years, Hoff 98.4 over four years. Principal and teachers praise their excellence and pride their families.
Prof Hayes of Waco elected high school principal to succeed Mr Layne who becomes superintendent at Clifton. Last week Miss Floy Harris was elected with the other teachers but her name was omitted by a typographical error.
Mr and Mrs Thad Grainger mourn the death of their two year old son Thad Leo Grainger who died last Monday. The child was buried at Oakwood Cemetery Tuesday at 4 30 p m with Rev Austin officiating. The community offers sympathy to the grieving family.
Mr and Mrs L A McClintock lost their baby Cecil Elvin on Wednesday night after a brief illness from acute indigestion. The infant was buried from the grandparents home of Mr and Mrs J G Nicholas on Thursday afternoon.
A local ad notes a plentiful stock of fancy shoe polishes in all colors offered by J. H. Allen at the south side square.
The week featured a sermon by Rev. Dr. John Power, a senior play titled At the End of the Rainbow, and a commencement address by Rev. Randolph Clark. Diplomas were awarded to graduates including Raymond Sherrill and Laura Lu Waring, with scholarships and special prizes announced by the Study Club and Prof. Layne.
C W Gilliland trustee to W F Durham pays 200 for 384 acres surveyed by D Millican J S Hudkins and W P Theobald. Gilliland to J R Eanes transfers 95 acres from John Marshall survey. Assignment of royalty from L O Moore to H C Smith for 20 with a 140 interest and J R Palmer transfers 90 acres.

Foreclosure, partition, and divorce actions are noted, with the Shear Company case on notes awaiting advisement. Names include J A Fisher C W Gilliland M T Leonard and others in docketed civil matters.
Public records show several oil lease transactions including A. B. Foster to S. B. Raitman for 120 acres in Three League Lampasas at 420 dollars, J. W. McIntire to J. M. Hickey for 30 acres at 60 dollars, and Prairie Oil and Gas Co acquiring 112 acres from W. F. Durham at 336 dollars. Other transfers include Andrew Jones and partners to Blake Fritz for 40 acres, and H. & T. C. Ry. Co to A. D. Morton for 310 acres, with additional entries across 201 to 1044 acre tracts.
