President sets War Savings Day and Texas governor to announce June 28. State aims to raise 2,000,000 in War Saving Stamps with a pledge plan in every county. On June 28 at 2 p m communities will reveal local quotas and pledges to be paid by December 31, 1918. County goal 600,000. only 40,000 sold so far. Citizens urged to attend meetings and pledge what they can pay.
The Comanche Summer Normal began Monday June 3 with 74 attendees and expected rising toward 100. Faculty includes J B Layne conductor B W Speed Foster Mrs W O Reynolds and Miss Pearl Boyd. Enrollment lists many students from Comanche and nearby towns such as Dublin Dublin and Gustine.
Provost General Crow der enforces work or fight by mobilizing local draft boards to report idle or unproductive men. Boards act like mini courts, notify registrants in three to seven days, submit records to district boards, and send adverse findings to camp or top of the list. Appeals require district dissent and approval agent recommendation. Also, Slider and Lacy announce arrival of a car of pure white bran.
Jim Hayes Jones of Comanche J L Guyear near Hazeldell and Mrs. Nettie Jane Middleton of Gustine appear in the readable portion of community notices.
Real grocery notice for Coleman’s Bakery offering victory cakes and a variety of confections including almond macaroon English plum pudding oatmeal wafers spiced muffins and coconut macaroon cakes. Fresh daily.
The Comanche Chautauqua opened with a large West Side School Grounds crowd. Boileaus Quaker Girls performed a top musical number. Hon. Joseph G. Camp gave a lecture, followed by Miss Elma B. Smith mimicry and songs. Alfred H. OConnor spoke of 22 months on the battle front. Miss Smith aided the advance work for the event, under Mr. Coonrod’s program supervision.
Ossie Greene and Garland Adcock were sent by the local board to Fort Sam Houston last Sunday. Two more calls are open for men to serve between June 15 and July 1. One post is auto mechanics at the A. and M. school, the other at Camp Mabry in Austin. The board seeks volunteers and prefers men with experience.
The Local Red Cross asks volunteers to pick up sock yarn for immediate knitting and sewing assignments. Report to the work room on Monday Wednesday and Saturday afternoons to help complete comfort kits. Surgical dressing classes move to three to six starting next week.
Local ad promotes remaining units of the 1918 six plow cultivators. Purchasers may buy now and pay this fall with no upfront price increase, with Higginbotham’s offering assistance to help customers out of the weeds.
A list of oil leases and assignments filed, naming numerous grantors and grantees. Notable entries include A. E. Hampton to Owen Hughes for 40 acres, H. T. & B. Ry. Co. dealings, and Cyrus B. Frost as recipient of multiple tracts varying from 8 to 225 acres, with varying payments from $1.00 to $270.00.
S. J. Hicks appointed chairman of the County Democratic Executive Committee succeeding J. D. Bonner who resigned to run for Justice of the Peace. Hicks, a longtime Comanche resident of twenty five years, takes the post as Bonner leaves for the race.
Carrolls Drug Store made a voluntary assignment this week, a fact noted with regret by all Comanche people. The stin uous conditions through which we have gone made it impossible to continue business.
Mass meeting at Comanche courthouse adopts resolutions urging all able bodied residents to work or enlist. A labor bureau will register job seekers and employers, with strict enforcement of vagancy laws to prevent idle land and ensure everyone serves or works.
Comanche County Troop recruiting continues with volunteers sought for men aged 18 to 45. Those interested are urged to visit the Comanche National Bank to speak with recruiting officers about mustering into service during wartime. John B. Chilton Jr.

On June 5 the second county registration day drew 150 registrations out of an estimated 211. Most absentees were already in service. In Comanche 108 registered and 41 in De Leon, with one late entry bringing total to 150. Names listed include Thomas Morris and Hoyt Elmer Mayes among many others from Comanche and De Leon.
