A fragmentary and haunting ballad telling of a lone woman lost at sea on the Dee coast. It evokes wild winds mist and the eerie return of the cattle home across the sands with the drowned maiden’s hair and a grave beside the sea. The sea’s foam and rowing boatmen mark the tragedy.
Dr Osterhout to establish a four sani tarium and modern clinic in Comanche by leasing the Arther house and converting it into a hospital. He has practiced in Goldthwaite for four years and will move to Comanche on June 15. Mrs Osterhout, a nurse, will supervise the hospital.
A nostalgic piece recalls city children craving ponies and using suburban lanes as their playgrounds. It notes low cost ponies from the Bull's Head Stables on the Lower East Side, with prices around 25 dollars. It contrasts past Western and New York scenes to modern autos.
Comanche County residents were sentenced under a law later ruled invalid by higher courts. Frank Walker received a year for wife and child desertion and has nearly finished his term in Huntsville after district action. H. H. Jamar drew six months for desertion last June and completed his term. R. P. Hughes got two years on a similar charge but won a new trial.
More than 150 members of the United States Highway 67 Association gathered in Stephenville to discuss widening the 785 mile road across 27 counties from Texarkana to Presidio. Officers were elected and a bond-issue advocacy message urged paving gaps while noting 181 miles of concrete and 242 miles of asphalt. A planned June motorcade to Chihuahua City was announced.

Two alleged rape cases used the first four days of District Court. The T. D. Starks case consumed Monday with 74 jurors and extra challenges, while Cris Norwood’s trial began Wednesday, producing a five year sentence for Norwood. No verdict yet in Starks.

A Summer School starts Monday at the Grammar School offering high school history English and algebra with possible additional subjects if demand exists. Parents and pupils are urged to telephone 82 or 219 or meet teachers Monday morning at the Grammar School. Minnie Cunningham and Hattie Brightman.
Mrs G A Marten and daughter with Miss Catherine Dudley and Miss Theresa Dudley of Dallas spent the weekend in Comanche with their mother Mrs C R M Dudley.
The Bowdoin Canning Plant began its third season with an early berry run on Thursday. Paul Bowdoin said the crop is expected to be as heavy or heavier than last year as frost killed initial berries and delayed the start. A second run is planned for Monday with operations set for Monday Wednesday and Friday next week.
The Legislature approved six major laws including Homer C. DeWolfe’s permanent split tax payment plan. Taxpayers may pay state and county taxes by January 31 with no penalty, or choose a split plan: half by November 1 and the rest by January 1 without interest. Other major measures include a 3 seas tax on a package of 20 cigarettes, sulphur tax increase, Sunday picture shows legalized, cotton truck loads capped at 10 bales, and mineral rents and bonuses for West Texas shoot land owners.
Mr and Mrs Tom Moore visited Fort Worth and Mineral Wells for a weekend trip, returning with no reported incidents.
Two cars of wool totaling 60 000 pounds were shipped Wednesday from Comanche over the Frisco to Boston by the Co Operative Association. An advance of 13.9 to 14.5 cents net to producers was made. About six cars remain in storage. a second shipment would be announced Friday afternoon. Ten thousand pounds were sent by truck to Galveston contracted for 18 cents by Stokes Bros of Lampasas.
The Seventh Grade Graduation Exercises at Proctor School were held Saturday night, May 23. Rev. Bradford of Dublin delivered the principal address. Seven students received diplomas: Geraldine Gaines, Mary Frances McClatchy, J. W. Kellum, Bert Carleton, Howard Starkie, H. V. Ewing and Jim Carrigon.
Laura Lou Waring daughter of Mr and Mrs John T Waring of Comanche left Cisco this week for New York City and will sail next week for Europe for a three months tour. Frank Mackey of Colorado City spent the weekend in Comanche. Joe Marshall and family spent Sunday at Energy with Mrs Marshall s brother Jewell Cox. Miss Helen Greenwade attended the graduation exercises at Hamilton Saturday. Howard Kilpatrick spent the weekend on the San Saba fishing with his brother Oscar of San Antonio.
A. B. Haworth visited Hobbs New Mexico last week. Miss Golden Jones who taught at Brownwood has returned home.
Local melon and fruit growers warn the Anti Peddler Law will ruin Comanche County truck trade by forcing peddlers to pay license fees in many counties. With buyers traveling across forty or fifty counties, fees could force sales curtailed and prices drop. Proponents say the law would keep peddlers to similar areas and curb inferior goods. Losses from reduced sales are estimated at twenty five to fifty thousand dollars annually, hitting melon and fruit growers hardest.
Mrs. Elizabeth Temple will conduct five Live At Home demonstrations in Comanche County from June 15 to 19 under the 4-H Clubs. County Agent J A Barton notes the events aim to boost canning as gardeners diversify crops amid low prices. Households without a 4 H Club are urged to attend and participate, with canning of materials arranged for participants.
Miss Catherine Clarke received the A B Degree at Daniel Baker College amid the commencement ceremonies. She previously studied at C I A and Daniel Baker but left Daniel Baker two years ago due to illness and taught near Sonora last winter. Clyde Boyd of Gustine earned an A B B Degree from Howard Payne College last week, as son of Mr. and Mrs. J N Boyd.
Dr and Mrs C Klingman of Electra spent the weekend in Comanche with friends during a brief social trip.
Terrell Pulliam receives his degree from the Texas Dental College of Houston on Wednesday May 27. A Comanche High School graduate, he plans to practice dentistry in Houston after completing his studies.
Annual district convention of the Rural Carriers will be held at Brownwood in the Woodland Heights School Auditorium on May 30 starting at 10 a.m.
