The Comanche Chief reports a 1917 notice warning dream sellers to register by June 5 under a new state law. It notes dairy and cream packaging rules, urged compliance by buyers, farmers, and creameries, and stresses safe, sanitary containers to prevent penalties.
The 4-H Club encampment at Lake Brownwood, June 6 to 8, is organized by the Extension District 7, inviting all Comanche County 4-H boys and their agents. The program includes games, health talks by physicians, outdoor topics, and lectures guiding boys toward moral and practical development. County boys are urged to contact their county agent to arrange attendance and plans for the summer vacation.
The Tabernacle Committee of Stags plans an entertainment at Stagg Creek Com House to raise funds for the tabernacle dese ction sales will be held and for guilt which the ladies le will be given away. Music and other features have been organized by committee members.
District court proceedings wrap up for the spring term with Judge to return for a final day. Two days were spent on the contested will case of Rebecca Alice Terry, deceased, with the jury deadlocked. The Robinson Springs School District vs B Ray McCorkle et al case ended in McCorkle’s favor though an appeal was noted. Rowland Gollihar of Brownwood received a two year sentence for burglary of the local Texaco warehouse.
Richard Slider of Comanche was named advertising manager of the Daniel Baker Collegian, the student weekly at Brownwood. The freshman is active in class, Footlight Players, and the college band, and contributed to earlier editions of the paper. Publication starts September 17 with weekly issues.
The league tabulates results with players Higginbotham Fagan Dudley and Biggs leading the standings. Upcoming games run May 21 to June 3 with clashes including Biggs against Higginbotham and W W against Fagan, plus Dudley facing Higginbotham and Jene meeting Dudley.
District Judge R B Cross addressed 55 Co manche High School graduates urging them to lead in the fight against crime. He warned that over 700000 American teens have committed major offenses and stressed obedience to the law as essential to success.
E S Fagan was elected president of the Comanche Lions Club at the bi weekly luncheon. Dr E R Ammons and Karl Shock were elected vice presidents. Harmon Howard remained secretary and Earl Ray Evans was tail twister. New board directors include C P St Clair and J C Wilkerson. Music by Pattie Ruth King and Mary Louise Ray born. Carl Rogers of Duluth Minn attended as guest as the club planned an aggressive program for the new year beginning June 1.
Comanche Public School teachers will study this summer under Superintendent J. D. Bramlette. Faculty members include J. D. Bramlette, Marion Smith, Gaynelile Cauley, Nobia Dunn, Aline Bettis, Audie Lee Austin, and Dorcus Brown among others. They will attend University of Texas Michigan State College Howard Payne College North Texas State Teachers College and CIA sessions or summer programs as health permits.
The local Post Office will close at 12 30 p m and reopen at 1 30 p m starting Saturday May 29 with hours to 5 00 p m Postmaster J R Eanes notes a May 31 holiday will keep the office closed all day Monday Patrons are reminded of the schedule shift and holiday closure.
Ruby Helen Huggins, a grammar school student, reported Friday that discarded potatoes in a cement cellar at her home had sprouted, producing new potatoes. The discovery was described as remarkable by the local child.
Depositors with under 5000 dollars are protected under the Federal Banking Insurance law as two Texas banks failed. First State Bank Arlington closed April 12 with 540000 in deposits, about 500000 insured, over 3000 depositors. Texas State Bank and Trust Corpus Christi closed April 9 with 470000 deposits, fully insured.
Fort Worth architect Co. M. Love was hired by the Comanche school board to draft plans for a brick and tile Comanche High School Gymnasium. Construction targets readiness for the next term, marking a major progressive step since the 1922 high school building.
The 45th Legislature approved a constitutional amendment enabling teachers to retire at 70 with a compulsory system starting Sept 1 1937. A voluntary retirement at 60 is allowed, funded by 5 percent salary contributions from teachers and matching amounts, with compulsory membership after 1938, raising costs to 1.5 to 2 million dollars annually.
Three robbers struck the Zephyr post office at 2 am on Tuesday, pried open the door, and escaped with 55 dollars a .38 pistol stamps and post office records. A Has Kell hitchhiker witnessed the scene and alerted a nearby residence. Sheriff Hallmark and deputies responded within 20 minutes and federal authorities were notified. Postmaster Luther Cobb had taken the job just over a week earlier.
Desdemona Methodist Church replaces its old plank building with a modern rock veneer house of worship. The congregation used the new church on Mother's Day May 9 under Pastor Rev. O D McDonald. A three day cornerstone laying and homecoming is planned for June 11 12 and 13 with visiting orphans from the Methodist Orphanage at Waco and public invited.
H M Vineyard County Pension Investigator for Comanche has been transferred to San Angelo to oversee similar duties across twelve counties. Judge R S McCharen noted the appointment will come from existing staff, with local assignments to be decided under current rules.
Highway work is underway on the sector from Comanche to the Brown County line with asphalt paving progressing. A contractor’s notice advertises sealed bids for 52.711 miles of asphalt seal coal across multiple county lines. A Hood County route study reports a new highway replacing No 10 to ease traffic, with surveys complete and detours avoided via underpass near Tolar.
Charles Von Rosenberg from the Austin Social Security Office will be in town all day Friday June 4 to discuss the Social Security Act with officials and civic leaders. A mass meeting at the courthouse at 10 a.m. will cover the program and the drive to assign account numbers to every worker.
W A McGlothlin of Co Manche reports a fair grain crop despite drought. He recently finished cutting oats and wheat, said yields were better than expected, and sold 30 bushels of corn from a barn with surplus stored for emergencies on his 250 acre farm.
Comanche reports a good cherry crop as seen in the E. E. McNatt yard. The single tree shown bears ripe cherries described as the kind mothers tell about from Old Kentucky.
The graduating class presented a three piece wicker furniture set to the Grammar School at the Thursday graduation exercises where 71 diplomas were awarded. Elder A C Nance delivered the class address.
With City Council approval Comanche forms a Fire Prevention Board led by L F Elkins as President and Miss Iva Hart as Secretary Other members include Karl Shock Dr E R Ammons Fire Marshal Jim Cunningham and Fire Chief Bob Graham The board focuses on education and recommends appointing a building inspector to ensure proper wiring and heating equipment installation in homes and businesses.
Waco Public School teacher Miss Sarah Jo Bramiette is expected home Saturday to upend the summer, her parents Supt and Mrs J D Bramiette.
Comanche County reports its largest blackberry crop in years with berries sold at about 50 cents per crate. About half the crop has been gathered and shoppers from outside Comanche are urged to visit promptly. For sellers and listings contact the Chamber of Commerce in the old First National Bank Building at the northeast corner of the square.
Rock Springs Baptist Church will hold special services on Sunday June 6. W H Day manager of the Baptist Orphan Home of Waxahachie will deliver the principal address, with a quartet from the home singing.
Fifty five students of Comanche High School received diplomas at graduation held Tuesday night in the local auditorium. Principal W Z Compton presented most diplomas. Joy McPherson and Donald Howington will receive theirs by mail, and Grady Newsome will be awarded a diploma at the end of the summer term.
