The 26 page Comanche issue edited by the high school staff promises readers a mix of student life and local commerce. It includes ads for hardware and groceries, a nine prize guessing contest, and notes on a weekend fishing tackle and yard furniture sale.
Plans are set for the second annual Comanche FFA and 4-H Rodeo to be held at the Comanche Rodeo Arena next Thursday through Saturday June 9 10 and 11. The event is sponsored by the Comanche Rodeo Club with participants invited from Early Zephyr Sidney Comanche Gustine Mullin Blanket Goldthwaite Pottsville Priddy Indian Gap and Hamilton. Nightly events include crowd entry reining bull riding barrel racing goat milking calf riding calf roping and bareback bronc riding. Admission is 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults. Proceeds will fund improvements to the Junior Livestock Show Buildings.
Comanche County’s Stag Creek showcases progress with a two hour tour in the Texas Community Improvement Progress Program the largest turnout yet and a bid for the state title. Judges will decide between Stag Creek Shady Grove Upshur County and Stillman Willacy County as the Magic Garden Spot of Texas.
A total of 58 absentee votes had been cast by Wednesday afternoon as Comanche County voters prepare for the June 4 runoff. The county faces races for Tax Assessor-Collector, Commissioner Precincts No 1 and No 3, Constable Precinct No 1, and a statewide Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals. Babe Scott appears on the Constable Precinct No 5 ballot as a sole name after a May 7 write in. County Democratic Chairman D F Caraway urges full turnout, though officials expect about 1,000 to 1,500 fewer votes than the 4,200 polled in May.
The Legislature designated the pecan as the state tree of Texas in 1919. This official act recognized the tree as a symbol of the state’s natural heritage and agricultural prominence.
Texas county sizes are listed with Brewster as the largest at 5935 square miles and Rockwall as the smallest at 149 square miles. The figures highlight Texas geographic scale differences across counties.
Commencement exercises for 46 Comanche High School seniors are set for Friday at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium with a student participation program. Baccalaureate is Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Rev. Kenneth Rouse to deliver the sermon. Mary Ann Durham to give the salutatory and Tommy White to speak.
Lou Ellen Durham daughter of Mr and Mrs L C Durham Comanche will receive her Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University Friday morning May 6 She is an English major Lou Ellen was valedictorian of Comanche High School s 1957 graduating class She and her sister Betty Grace who is a freshman at Baylor University will attend summer school at the University of Mexico in Mexico City
Comanche will observe Memorial Day next Monday May 39 as an official holiday. This is one of six approved holidays for 1969 voted by Comanche merchants. Most firms will be closed all day.
Comanche gears up for summer baseball with Major Little League four-team round robin led by coach Ray Smith. Babe Ruth League with four teams and six Minor Little League squads also schedule games Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays. all to be played at venues across the area.
Sarah Lou McCullough daughter of Mr and Mrs Gayle McCullough of the Newburg community won a ten day educational trip to California as district winner in the 4-H Cooperative Result Demonstration Program. She also received a $25 savings bond and will join twelve other district winners August 4 in Amarillo before departing August 5 for San Francisco and Berkeley aboard a chartered bus sponsored by Producers Grain Corporation of Amarillo.
The Comanche Swimming Pool at Lake Eanes Park opens this Saturday for the 1960 season. It operates daily afternoons and nights through the summer with 25 cent children and 35 cent adults admission. Kenneth McNutt will be lifeguard and Mrs. Roy Nelson runs the concession, as park improvements include new picnic tables and benches.
