A 1918 Comanche Chief item lists candidate declarations for the Legislature, Prohibition, and woman suffrage with L B Russell pledging support for Woodrow Wilson and Will Hobby. Hon H L Stewart former county judge announced Monday he will not run for judge again but filed as candidate for county Democratic executive committee chair. Stewart serves on the Comanche City Council and is considered a party activist in the area.

The Texas State Highway Department awarded Brown and Root Inc of Austin a $19,624 contract for 12.9 miles of base reshaping on Mills County and a seal coat on 15.7 miles of Highway 81 between Comanche and Leon. Jensen Construction Company of Austin received a $232,685 contract to build a bridge cover over the Colorado River on Highway 81 spanning Mills and San Saba counties.

North Side Cafe led by Jim Moody faces Dudley Brothers in a charity softball match at the local park. Proceeds aid the Comanche Band with a band concert slated before the game.
A. G. Barmore president of Goering Quartz Mining Co. of Alhambra California spent two weeks around Comanche visiting relatives the Fletcher and McKinzie families. Former Comanche Chief mechanic known as Gordy in 1895 1903 recalled reviving gas engines and laughing at a supervisor’s warning. He has since lived in Denver San Francisco and Alhambra and returned to discuss his mining success.
Walter Jack Cunningham Jr., holder of a University B.A. and soon an A.M., has been awarded a physics fellowship at Harvard University and will pursue a PhD next session.
Dr Nelson Smith of Wichita Falls moves to Comanche and opens an office in Higginbotham Building formerly used by Dr Payne. A medical graduate with postgrad study in Scotland, he has worked in major U S hospitals and served in government camps. His father ran a long standing Texas drugstore and his mother plans a hospital venture here.
Karl Shock, manager of the Texas Telephone Company, was elected president of the Comanche Lions Club at a Ridgeway luncheon. He will take over June 1 from Elland Fagan who has set a notable record. Other officers include Charles Marshall first vice president Sammy Waisman second vice president Harmon Howard secretary and Elland Fagan tail twister.
The Indian Mountain School led by Jodie Jordan will end its session today with only three county schools still in session, namely Indian Mountain, Hazel Dell, and Sabano, closing today.
Capacity crowds attended the closing events for Comanche schools over several days. About three thousand people were counted in attendance across the baccalaureate at the high school auditorium on Sunday the grammar school graduation Monday and the high school graduation Tuesday. Teachers plan summer study or travel. Superintendent J D Bramlette will visit Denton and teach at Sul Ross Teachers College Alpine during the summer session.
The City Council named W. D. Jenkins C. M. Moore and D. C. Dingus to the Comanche equalization tax board. The board is now in session reviewing tax renditions and will send notices to property owners whose valuations may be adjusted.
R A Luker states he will not enter the race for Representative despite prior promises. He thanks supporters and wishes well for all, signaling no campaign.
Sheriff Wid Spivey arrested two Dublin men aged 40 and 20 Thursday night after their car struck a post at the Highway 10 and 36 intersection in East Comanche. The older man was treated for facial cuts at a physician office. the younger man was unhurt.
Judge C. J. Gray, 72, brother of Dr. A. J. Gray, died at the Gray Ranch south of Comanche Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were to be held at Gorman, his former home, time undecided by late Thursday.
Five families in New Hope and nearby areas plan new homes after a Sunday tornado carved a seven mile path north of Comanche. It damaged five residences, barns, outbuildings and uprooted trees, with workers from several communities aiding reconstruction efforts.
A severe storm uprooted trees and caused odd damage at the W H Dean residence with an 18 inch plank driven through an oak limb. A knife from a Dean trunk blade driven into a tree. Chickens found with heads blown off at several farms. At Schupps, tractor and truck relocated by wind. vehicles scattered, houses displaced.
Near Round Mountain and Comanche the funnel cloud struck Cotton Grove causing light damage then moved to New Hope west of Downing destroying several homes. No injuries were reported as residents sought shelter in cellars. Damages include homes livestock pastures crops and barns with many chickens killed. W H Dean recalled the farm devastation.
